I believe the narrator was only trying to point out the fact that Allah gave Soleiman so much power that he could even control jinns! Even when he died the Jinns were so weak and naive that they were not aware of him being dead, until his staff was eaten by ants or some kinda bug and he lost balance n fell down on the ground, the jinns then found out that he was actually dead.
