I wish more composers would do stuff like this: these from "piano to orchestra" videos are definitely one of the best things out there. Best way, in my opinion, to learn orchestration. Thank you so much sir... Now all we need are videos about how to choose instruments - oboe vs flute, violins vs violas, etc... :P

Hi guys. Beginner here. I found an awesome resource. A website that has many John Williams scores in midi. You just drag them into the BBCSO template. It's been a lot of fun soloing sections and seeing what works together and why. Like this, the masters can teach you about instrument choices. But not just Master Williams, why not Bach, etc? And last but not least Gabriel and Christian Henson from Spitfire have released midi/project files for their compositions and you can dig into them the same way. I'm mixing this with recreating some scores by ear. The website i spoke of can be found by typing johnwilliamsfree into google.

I saw one of them like six months ago (or maybe a little more - time's been weird since the pandemic) and was encouraged to try my own arrangement to a song I wrote on piano twenty years ago with the London BBC Orchestra you made a video about. It turned out pretty damn good and inspired me to continue to work down this incredibly fulfilling road, interweaving orchestra elements with rock & metal guitar. Ok, I understand these libraries (not quite, but a bit), so it would be great to know some kind of composer stuff for this, some general approaches of creating rhythms and accents. That is some premium content - really educational! I am new to Cubase but have the latest version of both Cubase and Kontakt. When I loaded your downloaded project into Cubase I get no sound on any of the tracks? What newbie mistake might I have done? :)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Regarding your problem you have to replace the MIDI instrument that loads automatically with a new Kontakt instance. One easy way to do it would be to create a new track and Kontakt instrument (let's say for the sake of the example French horns ) and then drag the corresponding MIDI part of my project into that new track you just created. You should hear it now!

Lol For the record I still LOVE Logic pro!! It's just that my MacBook pro is getting old and it doesn't handle reading these orchestral projects while doing the screen capture the way it used to! But getting a more modern 🍎 computer is definitely in the works amd so Logic pro tutorials will make a come back :)

The balance between the brass shorts and sustains is off, which makes it sound less like a cohesive phrase. Not sure if it's simply a matter of volume/gain or if the dynamics also need to be adjusted. Similarly, the brass sustain notes (horns in particular) should probably use the marcato articulation, as the slow attack on the sustains is not really suited for this type of writing. Cool little demo otherwise :)

A question I get a lot :) my 2013 MacBook was getting to slow to handle logic and obs at the same time but I also have a much powerful PC. So I switched to cubase which I found was thr closest to logic on PC. Looking into a new Mac though so I might switch back to logic soon
