Yes, drama is universal and many tribal groups are still performing drama imitating different characters in their own ways. Being a student of anthropology, I have seen such type of performances among the Sherpas, Newars and Tharus in Nepal. Before 6th century BC, in Indian societies theatrical performances were prevalent and not limited to ritualistic but social or entertainment, sometimes they were erotic too. Buddha prohibited monks and nuns to participate in such types of activities that could be harmful to monastic and spiritual life.
