There's not a ton of amp in a box pedals you could argue are aimed at rockabilly players, but this thing is unreal for that mid 50's tone. Think Grady Martin, Cliff Gallup, Eddie Cochran, Danny Gatton and Brian Setzer. Sure they aren't all from the 50's, but their amplifier inspirations certainly were! Enter the Universal Audio Woodrow 55 Instrument Amplifier. See the video for more (chapters below) but you can also visit the website for this pedal here:

Great video. And nice to see this pedal being used for some music from the actual era these types of amps were first used instead of just the usual Neil Young or Joe Bonamassa licks. I have the Woodrow, Ruby, and Dream 65, and they’re all great for what they do.

You’ve certainly given me some ideas for dialing in tones. Yes, there might be six knobs on there, but it’s really no more complicated than having a regular amp, a reverb pedal, and a boost. But with the ability to try out different cabs, there really are a wealth of nice options to get a variety of tones without falling into parameter paralysis.

Amazing review! definitely saving for this one! Btw, i thought in the signal chain the reverbs and delays were supposed to be after the preamp

@@AdrianWhyte I'm performing weekly w my brain preamp into my Strymon iridium which like the woodrow is an amp/cab emulator w loadable IR's. Seeing this vid is brilliant and at the end of the video, nothing needs to be said as you play the mysterybrain into the Woodrow and it opens up to perfection direct to DAW. I now have gas for a woodrow as a second amp on my pedal board. thanks for sharing this as many of us players are looking for a good clean dynamic amp in a pedal that will take our favorite pedals. Mine being the mysterybrain naturally :). Again thanks for a great vid demo and great playing.

Great timing. I’ve been thinking about this for early BB King, Jump, Rockabilly tones. I would be running it into the front of an amp though. Any thoughts on how well it works to deliver tweed tones into a clean amp? Also the chain placement confuses me as I’d normally have drive before echo but I get the feeling this Woodrow pedal would be last in the chain.
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 8 ай бұрын
Man, I have had all the same questions!! In the end I’ve thought of it as the amp itself, so last, but I was actually thinking that if it’s run as a drive/colour pre amp, it may go better earlier in the mix, but I haven’t tried it. I should have mentioned, you can pop the speaker switch off for going straight into an amp. Then it’s essentially a tweed drive pedal. It’s a great pedal though and either way I’m sure you’ll tweak it to get a sound you’re happy with!

Thanks Adrian. Be interested what you think of this versus the much much cheaper Joyo American Sound. I use the Joyo and also with just the BS301 in front of it, a bit noisy on some settings but I use it live straight into via a PA (no amp) so that isn't really an issue. This does sound excellent here, but think that may be in the fingers!
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 8 ай бұрын
I almost think you might find that setup setup better with with joyo first- I was just discussing this above in the comments regarding chain order- when it’s going into your interface it almost has to be last, but into an amp with speaker sim off you could run it earlier as a drive/preamp, I would think the same for the joyo. The joyo is great but not quite as nuanced from my memory, the joyo definitely colours it nicely though but wont have you covered as well directly into a pa or interface

Let me give an unpopular take that may ruffle a few ducktails...as a long-time rockabilly player. Rockabilly is simple primitive music. If you need something with this many knobs and switches in addition to the numerous knobs and switches on your guitar and amp you're doing it wrong. Man guitarists are SO FUSSY. Just get a Gretsch or a Tele, a tweed amp with 6l6's and alnico speakers, plus an analog delay pedal (digital is ok I guess but analog is warmer) and that's all you need fam. If you can afford it, get one of those Magnatone amps (vintage not the reissues as they don't quite sound the same) But sure buy the pedal and instead of figuring out how to just nail the tone in a simple way you can spend all day turning various knobs and flipping switches. Just remember for rockabilly, simpler is better, less is more. But thanks for the review, you're a great player. :)

Hey man, you’re totally allowed to have your own opinion! In fact I think to some degree it’s a straight up fact, especially if you look at the really early stuff, so it’s totally a fair call! However (there’s always a however, ha!) The day Scotty moore and Chet Atkins and Scotty Moore received their Amps with built in delay circuits, is the day the argument shifts a little bit. If you consider this alone, let along the recording techniques used to create the organic Slapback, things were not so primitive. Also consider that all styles evolve - it wouldn’t be that much fun if rockabilly bands were still singing about hot dog stands. Lastly, the pedal has no more knobs than a magnatone amp really.. well, a couple of switches perhaps but it’s easier than switching the speaker or changing the preamp unit from your echo pedal 😜

I think you are misunderstanding this device. It’s not some fancy complicated gadget; it is basically just an amp. Same simple controls as on an amp. It’s not some special gimmick to get rockabilly tones; it’s just an option for people who don’t want to deal with the expense of an actual vintage tweed amp, nor the maintenance. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an old school guy (as well as being an actual old guy), and I love my old genuine gear - I have a few tube amps from the 60s, and have owned many more. But they are honestly a lot of hassle compared to a simple device like this that gives you the same tones. I always found pedals that were supposed to sound like certain amps always fell far short, but this one is spot-on. If I was in the market for more gear, I’d definitely be picking one up.

I probably should have bought that box over the Ruby 63. I’m preferring my Dream 65 and not using the Ruby much….but that Woodrow set to a cleanish tone with my new UA OX stomp….hmmm. By the way I love the new UA OX stomp, really great to get those great cabs, amp mics, room mics in that little box. If you can’t find your sound with the OX Stomp after your Woodrow, Dream 65 or Ruby, you’ll never find it in my opinion. Good review. Keep up the great work!

Stratocasters were also used, Gibson Les Paul’s, solid body, hollow body. Point is, rockabilly as a sound really relies a lot on the visual style - and in the early days the visual style was secondary to the technical necessities of the musicians. So really, it’s in your fingers, note choices etc- first. Start there and build out. Ultimately a guy with the coolest clothes, a Gretsch with some delay, and a pompadour is a post card if he can’t actually play.
