I dry the calyxes and store in a jar to use as 'cool-aide' all year - sweetened it tastes so good!!! and instantly made. I soak a handful in cold water for about 15 minutes, strain, add sugar and it's gone in minutes. LOL Pretty, too. I understand it is a Christmas tradition in the islands to mix with rum for a celebration drink during the holidays They mix in spices like clove but I have no clue how to make it.Thanks for this recipe as I really want to explore more uses.

I have to this a try the cooked version. I was wondering, are the flowers edible? I mean, you know after they close up? If so, I will keep an eye on them as well. Thanks a million!

Yes they are

Mine never bloomed. Got huge but no blooms. Was it the cold start this year and short growing season here in zone 6? I’m going to try to protect it from frost n pray for blooms. Any ideas?

Mine is not blooming yet either. For us will be mid October when day length shortens

@@gardeningwithhossI’ll protect from frost as long as I can. My first year growing n really want to harvest them. They didn’t start indoor well so direct sowed them. Next year will try indoors again.

When does the rosella get blooms. Mine are very tall but don’t see any buds or signs of flowers

My Roselle has been blooming about a week, but we have a high probability of a frost next week. Will a lite frost hurt them?
@gardeningwithhoss Жыл бұрын
possibly, you can harvest after the bloom wilts, the calyx will not be as big

will those grow in the North?

Roselle is native to tropical regions and in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11 it can be grown as a perennial, but in Zones 5-8 it is treated as an annual. It shouldn't be planted outdoors in temperate zones until the weather has warmed-at least 2 to 3 weeks after the last spring frost date.

if you add dissolved and cooled gelatin to the extra smoothie, you can freeze it in pop sickle molds for a no-drip snack. oh wait...pineapple enzymes and gelatin don't always play well together

You may want to check out backflow contamination from straws. Made me cringe seeing people use a "clean straw" on the same container. Otherwise, interesting use of roselle hibiscus. Mine are one of the few plants not bothered by deer. No calyxes yet, and average frost is next week (although it's 92° today).
