The writer mentioned in the second verse is one of the great American 20th century novelests, Ernest Hemingway, who wrote the bookl, "For whom the Bell Tolls." Great book. Hemingway lost his ability to write after getting encephalitis. He committed suicide because he couldn't write anymore... The Bell Tolls for thee... The irony of this recording of the song is that it was the only tour they ever played this song, and this recording is the only time Ben Mink played it with them live. It was there last tour and it would be 5 years later that Neil, the author of the lyrics, would die of brain cancer.

Neil knew his time was up as a drummer. His body couldn't keep up. Something Geddy had trouble understanding until he went to visit him in California and saw how happy he was being a volunteer librarian at his daughter's grade school. Yeah, that would do it for me too.

This song brings out so much emotion. Just another masterpiece by RUSH. I am so fortunate to have lived through the RUSH era. Have listened to them since Jr High School back in the 70's. Was so fortunate to have seen them live some 18 times. These people are so supremely talented, creative, an absolute treasure to humanity. I miss them so much.... @@WhimsyMeadows - When you think about it all, and reflect upon your own life, it is quite the sweet but bitter feeling. Like most people, I have been quite fortunate in my life, all the while working through many trials and tribulations. The ebbs and flows of life's fortunes and struggles. As I move into my mid 60's, a long time software engineer laid-off (outsourced to India) a half a year ago, this song touches a few cords with me while I attempt to bootstrap my career once again, during some difficult times. "The Fountain Of Lamenth" by Rush was epic and I think defines them. A lot about life. People didn't get it by Rush but it played in a lot in their songs. Rush was trying to get more Radio play. Its a different mood then their early work. Later the circled back to the beginning. The last tour "The Final Rush Tour" I saw the people loving the new album. Then they started playing older songs and the crowd came alive. More cheers and spirit came alive to see Rush in full circle. Was a great trip with Rush from 1976. Thanks for all the memories.

This was a cool idea to couple the studio and live versions in one reaction video. Losing it has always been a song that touches the heart. When the band decided to add it to their set list for the R40 tour it was especially touching because we all knew this was going to be their last tour. For a band that had been so tight for so long, producing unmatchable music for so long and now seeing it come to an end this song had a very special meaning. That wasn't lost on the fans. I went to the R40 show in Minneapolis and unfortunately they didn't play Losing It at that show. However, they did play Jacob's Ladder, which is one of my favorite Rush songs and not commonly played live, so there's that.

I also see myself in this song as I was a Tribal Bellydancer for 18 years and danced at a number of festivals, fund raisers and weddings. 2019 was my last performance when I was 65. All the money from the show went to charity. Another performance from 2018 Summer Shimmy. We did three songs and the last one is a comedy piece. Tribal Bellydance does not use choreography all the time We learn a syllabus of steps and it is lead and follow. We choreographed our sword pieces.( not too could get dangerous LOL) and we did a full choreography for our comedy piece as well. I am the the one with the turquoise skirt on top and orange on the bottom. I also had a costume mishap that night. I tied my belt in correctly and it started to slide down a bit. Fortunately, I was able to fix it during the performance nonchalantly. It was a lot of fun and the outdoor performances could be interesting. LOL

Great reactions Whimsy! One of Rush's most beautiful (& emotional) songs! This live version was in Toronto, on their R40 tour...the last they'd do...regretfully. I treat this song as part of a trilogy of sorts - an emotional trilogy. The others being Afterimage and The Garden! Each one makes me think of Neil, and the sadness I feel that we've lost him. I highly recommend checking those two tracks out...in that order...but please, have tissues on hand! Afterimage is the first song I thought of after hearing of Neil's passing (when you hear the first line, you'll understand), and since that time, I can't get through The Garden without tears - the music is beautiful, the lyrics are even better! I was listening to this when I got the news that Neil had passed. I cried for over a week. The irony is in my declining years, these guys were performing slightly older than I am now, and I could never have hoped to achieve this greatness even in my own field of endeavors, even as they all know they are where I am.

The news of Neil’s death absolutely destroyed me. I had been so happy to see him quit when he was ready, and figured he was enjoying life and his family. It was just devastating news. I remember I was busy at work when one of my coworkers texted me the news. I just couldn’t understand it. Still brings tears to my eyes when I think of it.

Of all Rush songs, this is the one I never agreed with since I was a kid. There is something to be said about humility in people with great success. To say that to have great success and lose it is worse than never having it at all smacks of pride. No, I feel far worse for those truly talented people we see out there that worked hard but didn't gain any level of great success than for those who did. Be happy with your achievements and walk away satisfied with having lived a life well led.
