Note there are 2 basic styles of Metal.... we can called them Heavy Metal and Melodic Metal....all other subgenres are variations of these.... So you seem to be interested in Melodic Metal.. These include Prog Metal. Power Metal, Melodic Metal, Symphonic Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Neoclassical Metal, Glam Metal, etc.

This performance was at Pinkpop 2022 in Landgraaf in the Netherlands. It was quite a special one. Not only that Nightwish was playing in Floors homecountry, this was also Floors second appearance that day and on that festival. Pinkpop had Floor as a solo artist and with Nightwish, with only 2 (or maybe 3) hours in between both perfomances. That edition of Pinkpop, Metallica was headlining the day and singer James Hetfield was in the audiance to watch Nightwish. He was that much impressed that he went backstage to talk to Floor. When Metallica came back to the Netherlands to perform in front of another 50,000 spectators in the Cruijffarena in Amsterdam, their supportact couldn't play because of illness of one of the bandmembers. Less than a week before the gig, they asked Floor to fill in and yes, Henk Poort came with her, singing The Phantom of the Opera.

All it takes to join the ranks is a passion for great music and the intelligence to understand the depth of Nightwish music and compositions. Tuomas is fascinated by science, biology, nature, and the human existence in all its beauty and wonder. Floor is always using the colors of her vocals to tell the story. Remember, Floor never claims to be an operatic soprano. She only loves to incorporate it into her myriad vocal textures. The spoken words are a quote from Romeo and Juliet. Tuomas also loves literature and poetry. Your the best Nick. Great vocalist as well.

Which song of Floor you might choose, it could not fail. She is the ultimate best female singer of our lifetime. Whatever guard you have up, when Floor's voice comes in she cut's thru it like a fresh sharpened butcher knife and get's you right into your soul and while your bleeding out you feel satisfied. When Floor goes into her emotional mode you can sleep in the finnish winter outside in the woods and still be warmed by her voice and feel comfortable. I hope you will some day get to the latest album where she sang in all the vocals in just 6 days after giving beirth to her second daughter some weeks ago. Yesterwynde: This album is like an old concept album by Pink Floyd, you might take the time to listen to it from the first song all thru to the last one. After about 50 times now it grew on me up to the 5 best albums I own - and I am 64 now and own about 8000 records. The last song -Lanternlight- is my personal song of the year 2024 by far. It is very, VERY different but exactly that is the reason. For me Nightwish has evolved to those rare bands, that create art without any consideration to what anybody expected or to say it the short way: Nightwish does Nightwish things. Much Love from Germany to you and your passionate reactions!

Tuomas, Floor, Troy and their previous bass player Marko are all very into science. And a lot of Nightwish songs have had science themes. Like the Greatest Show on Earth for example. And Nightwish also gets a lot of love from the scientific community, a lot of animals and geological formations etc. have been named after the band or members of the band. There is a beetle named after Floor Jansen, the Tmesisternus floorjansenae.

I haven’t seen a similar comment yet scrolling through, so will add this: Part of the unusual feel of the melody and rhythm is that Tuomas wrote it mostly in Iambic Pentameter. That’s the style Shakespeare often wrote in. I think Tuomas knew he wanted to use that quote from Romeo and Juliet all along, so maybe he said to himself “Why don’t I write the entire piece like Shakespeare would have?”

I guess you're too young for this, but in the early 1990s, Eugene Shoemaker was a household name across the world for his discovery, along with his wife Carolyn and David Levy of the comet (Shoemaker-Levy 9) that smashed into Jupiter. For a 17 year old just gearing up to go to university to study astrophysics when the comet hit in 1994, it was an exciting time for me.

@Trevor2123029 күн бұрын
My favorite part of this song is actually that Latin phrase, "Laudato si ad astra". Altogether it can be translated as "Praise be to the stars" or "Praise be to the cosmos". But each half by itself is also meaningful. "Laudato si" is one of the most important and recognizable phrases from the writing of Saint Francis of Assisi, and translates to "Praise be", with the important thing being that there _isn't_ anything specific that you're meant to be praising. Just the universe, the Earth, and all of Nature and human experience, which is certainly fitting for a man like Eugene Shoemaker who was so enamored with the entire cosmos, from the largest of planets to the smallest of rocks. "Ad astra", or "To the stars", meanwhile, is sometimes used in ancient Latin writings as shortened version of a phrase meaning "Like finding a path to [walk to] the stars", describing something incredibly difficult or unlikely to the point of being akin to trying to find a way to walk to the stars. This, I think we can all agree, is equally applicable to the man who proved that the craters on the moon were caused by asteroid impacts and not vulcanism, was an early proponent of the idea that a large asteroid impact led to the extinction of the dinosaurs, co-discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 which was orbiting Jupiter in an unstable orbit at the time, and later became the first ever observation of a collision between two celestial bodies, was instrumental to the Apollo Program, and eventually became the first and only person to be at least partially interred on another celestial body. My _second_ favorite part of this song is the spoken word part, "And when he shall die, cut him out in little stars, and he shall make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with the night, and pay no worship to the garish Sun". This is in fact a quote from _Romeo and Juliet,_ and also happened to be Eugene Shoemaker's favorite Shakespeare quote. It was written on the gold foil which was wrapped around his urn (for lack of a better term) on the Lunar Orbiter turned Lunar Impactor satellite which became his headstone on the Moon. I'm pretty sure it's also carved into his Earthly headstone, too.

Hello, Nick! A great reaction and analysis, as always. For interest, the lyrics you re-quoted at 19:27 are from Shakespeare's _Romeo and Juliet_ (spoken in performances by Tuomas's wife Johanna Kurkela, a singer who with Tuomas and Troy make up the 3-piece band Auri), where Juliet is eulogising the dead Romeo. The lyric of Floor's operatic closing, 'Laudato si' ["Be praised!"], is a quote from Francis of Assisi's 1224 'Canticle of the Sun', the first poem known to have been written in Italian (rather than Latin). KZbin reactor Guylain Prince OFM, a Quebecois Franciscan friar and metal fan, has a fine analysis of 'Shoemaker' that you might enjoy. As Brother Guylain explains, Pope Francis used the same phrase to title his second encyclical in 2015, in which he called for action to combat climate change. It's likely that Tuomas was aware of this when he wrote 'Shoemaker'.

One thing I rarely hear being discussed in these reactions, is that Floor is singing outside. She has to deal with varying winds, temperature, humidity, pollution, heat (or cold), sun, rain, plus the mental aspect of singing to a crowd that may only partly be fans of the band. I believe that when this performance took place it was stinking hot. From what I've read, Wacken 2013 was a mud bowl. In her ReVamp days the band often played to a hungover crowd in an early time slot. To sing to a hungover, wet, cold, dispirited crowd and still deliver your all, is the mark of a true professional. This performance was a mid day slot where many people were just wandering about, getting lunch, etc. The singer and the rest of the band have to focus on their fans at the front and ignore the rest of what is happening at the back of the crowd. Imagine going all out like Floor is at the end of "Shoemaker" and seeing people at the back of the crowd meandering about, not paying any attention. Takes a thick skin. At Pinkpop Floor also put on a solo show with a mix of After Forever, ReVamp, Nightwish and her solo material. She talked about being relieved that the crowd didn't dissipate when she launched into her set. There's a mental toughness aspect for a performer at these outdoor festivals where you may have to deal with watching droves of people walk away because your material isn't what they like. Not for the fragile ego.

Love love love Shoemaker! One of my favourites is: the greatest show on earth

" .. and that's why we love them." Yep As I've said before, Floor doesn't just sing it, she lives it, every time, every song. (& Tuomas, & the rest of the crew too[esp Ville Lippainen & crew, who artfully capture those beautiful moments]) :)

All they do is pure magic !

They were performing in scorching heat, using not so great festival sound quality. Deichbrand, Hellfest or, even better, official lyric video, are great representatives for this song (including tears in audience). I heard this live, can't describe the feeling.

The phrase "eternal Earthrise" is a bit of genius from Tuomas. Seen from the Moon, Earth barely moves in the sky - and from Shoemaker's resting place, it would be forever hanging on the horizon.

Being a member of the Nightwish Army is for every fan. Ann Waychoff was the super fan that started the Fandom. She passed away in 2020, Gabriel is the one we call the General as he has a wonderful list that you probably have already.

It’s my first time watching this performance and it just made me cry at the gym hahaha This ending made it look like Floor singing is lifting Tuomas up. It hits me every time.

you should listen to Yours Is An Empty Hope (live at Wembley is a good version), Floor growling is an experience you don't want to miss out on :)

This could be the song to also react to studioversion because the finale is so epic.

I would agree that the live versions are always worth the listen. The album version of this song sounds huge, well, it does to me. that coupled with the video, its worth a listen That text spoken “When he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.” This quote is from William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It was inscribed onto a piece of brass foil that was wrapped around the capsule that carried Shoemake's ashes to the moons surface

As always great reaction Nick😉 The part you're reading at the end of the video is not written by Tuomas, it is actually a part from William Shakespeare's famous play; "Romeo And Julliet". However, that part is spoken by Tuomas' wife Johanna Kurkela, so he kept it into the family. 🤘Greetings from the first airborne division of the Nightwish army based at Maastricht, The Netherlands.🤘
