I can't wait to follow this when I start getting around to remaking my ship turrets since I keep getting stuck on making them functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Wow, I did not know HEAT/HESH can jump through to flush subobjects... I need to go redesign all my turrets now. 😅 Thanks Ohm! Love the video! And I keep being blown away by how good your hovertanks look. 😁👍

Right? I love when a video teaches me something new about the game, too. Ohm has some great tidbits here. :D

One thing not mentioned (though mostly aesthetic) is that thanks to the hide mesh option you can have functional and aesthetically pleasing external spaced armor now, you can fit a heavy armor beam on the outside and mimic plates over it, instead of having to use actual plates, been doing it for my tanks since it was added (since I love the aesthetic of the German Panzer IV H with it's spaced armor) and looks quite good, works even better. Edit: One thing regarding mimicking/decorating, is that old textures and un-used textures are still being kept in the game files and are accessible through mimicking/decorating, not to mention textures specific to them like Mimick:Sphere and so on.

Just a heads up on the armouring front, having a single layer of armour on the turret itself (even just metal/alloy) can help a lot in protecting them against things like HE leaking. That's still a noticeable issue at times, and will hurt any softer components it can reach.
@OhmIsFutile2 жыл бұрын
Can't say I've experienced explosion warping in a long time, but it would definitely help.
@IainDoherty512 жыл бұрын
@@OhmIsFutile I saw a lot of it recently in testing for Menti's tourney, which had HEAT and HESH banned but still had APS guns losing neck pieces without losing the armour protecting them at times when facing HE CRAMs. That said not as big an issue as the HE Bug currently in the game that we're trying to science out and figure out the source of

What i like doing is making the turret completely invisible with decorations as Mimic: Empty and hide original mesh. Then from only one turret block i decorate an entire turret cap. From one barrel i decorate the turret's barrels. This allows me to build far nicer turrets that fit any craft better. I can build a large and well armored turret but make it look far smaller and more beautiful
@OhmIsFutile2 жыл бұрын
Now that's dedication 😅
@gustaveliasson53954 ай бұрын
An excellent method in terms of its aesthetic potential. The drawback would be that any damage to the turret would be invisible (unless it destroys the anchor block for the decorations, at which point the mask would come off all at once). As such, I find a distributed system more appealing as it shows battle damage in a more organic manner. To each their own.

The reason for completely armoring your turrets in game historically always were wonky explosion mechanics. I don‘t play regularly anymore but when I still did, an explosion hitting a turret cap would not be stopped from entering the hull (and by extension your sensible turret bits) from the top which meant you basically had to not only armor your turrets but also put them inside a turret well. Don‘t know how explosive damage is calculated now.

Can you make a tutorial/guide for creating vehicles similar to the ones from your Very Hard Neter series ? I am really new to the game and I would love to have a guide on creating a stable hovercraft. I also heard you can "gimball" your jet thrusters using spin blocks : )
@OhmIsFutile2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I might be able to make such a video. We'll see, so much I still want to discuss and so little time lol Also yes, you can "gimbal" or vector pretty much all forms of thrust with spinblocks, but you can also do it up to 15 degrees without spinblocks too!
@cordedrexcordedrex68542 жыл бұрын
@@OhmIsFutile You might also explain how to gimball with the spin block in that video. I have not seen any video talking about it.

at 14:47, I really need to know, how are you making the barrel stick out of a piece of metal, rather than the firing piece? I'd really like to know.

@@OhmIsFutile Wild. Thank you. I've been struggling with armouring up my turrets. One vehicle I made can be, quite literally, split in half if it is shot with any sort of explosive at around the area of the firing piece, so I was looking for ways to armour it up.
@OhmIsFutile7 ай бұрын
@@aname6794 I find a heavy barrel or two directly at the base of the firing piece along with a bit of heavy armour is usually quite good at keeping things functional unless hit directly by something powerful. Nothing sane will stop a cram cannon or large APS shell from destroying your cap on a direct hit though. Don't put all your eggs in one basket comes to mind. Hope that helps.

A point for having the armor all around the turret is that you often fight multiple enemies. So just armoring the side thats pointing towards your target might get you killed if a second enemy is on the side of it and just pens the turret and blows it up.

Hahaha, it's hard though. I think I've only nailed one tank-like look, but yes, turrets contribute a lot to the overall look of a vehicle.
