For reference, 500mm guns are 19.7". That's 1.7" bigger than the main cannons of the IJN Yamato, whose 18" guns were the biggest ship cannons ever and could put anything on the ocean under it. It also fired at a blistering rate of 2 rounds per minute. In a single fight, these ships put more shells down-range than the Yamato fired in its entire time afloat and both took a battering that beggars belief. Either of these vessels, if pitted against real-world opponents, would be unstoppable by anything short of a rather large nuke.

Medrenguard could simply shoot the nuke with anti munition defense. Even if it made it through it has plenty of amour to protect it. No man could be killed to take it down since it’s AI run, and even if EMP off the nuke tried to kill it the surge protectors would stop them. Long story short. Bow down to the Leigon as I have, they are unstoppable

This is ignoring a few things. "In a single fight, these ships put more shells down-range than the Yamato fired in its entire time afloat" The Yamato got the nickname of the "Hotel" because it sat in port for most of the war, or acted as a non combat flagship that sat in the back, such as during the battle of Midway where it didn't fire a single shot. "whose 18" guns were the biggest ship cannons ever and could put anything on the ocean under it." Maybe, if it could hit it. The shells being big didn't mean much. The US Navy's main armament for their battleships was 16 inch guns, and those guns could do just as much damage as the Yamato's if they hit a critical part of the ship, which is how most naval battles happened. The Bismarck only had 15 inch guns, yet with a single shot destroyed the British Battlecruiser Hood, the reason being, it hit the ammo rack, making all their ammunition detonate. What people don't realize, is that in naval warfare, there's a chance that a shell being too big means it would go in one side, and straight out the other. You don't sink warships by putting holes in them. I mean sure, you can, eventually, but if you put a hole in them the sizeof a single shell, and they put a hole in your ship the size of your ammo rack exploding? Guess who wins. And no, these ships would lose massively to any real world opponent, because their shells may be large, but that's not what wins a battle. That's just what people who know nothing about warships think about ships. 'bigger guns are better'. Problem being, specifically in this game, those shells are EXTREMELY slow, and any modern ship would be nearly impossible to hit if they were constantly changing course. The shells are just that slow, whereas any modern day ship is going to be fighting it at an extreme range where these shells would take MINUTES to arrive. Don't even get me started on the amount of ammunition they use just firing for a single minute, which means you run out of ammo quickly, or you have a LOT of ammo storage, which means you have a LOT of potential explosions. You saw when the Ragnarok lost a turret? That wouldn't have just been the turret disappearing. It would have destroyed that section of the entire ship and set fire to the rest. Let's not even talk about the fact that battleships are obsolete specifically because nothing they can do is any match for aircraft, short of their own aircraft. The problem is, aircraft have advanced, and become more deadly... battleships have not. Even if you're looking at these ingame advanced battleships, they stand no chance against a high altitude bomber, and considering they barely move, they would be sitting ducks.

@@bellidrael7457 you know the shells in this game only move so slow because of the insanely high air resistance on the planet this all takes place so in a real world environment these shells would due to the excessive amount of gunpowder used be fast as hell plus if you can fire big shells rapidly the chance of hitting something important is higher than same rate of fire and smaller shell PLUS these shellst dont go in and out the other side they have fuses and stuff so they penetrate the enemy hull and explode inside so the dont only do damage to what they hit they breach open the hull and deal heavy damage to any internals

It's interesting how the Medrengard is probably one of the best ships to beat the Ragnarok. It displays a very small target to the enemy, and has heavy armor and shielding on that front, along with penetration cannons. The Ragnarok against a similar sized ship to itself, is a comically one-sided fight. Good video though, been waiting for a while for something like this.

Units will begin a self-destruct timer once they drop to 55% intact blocks, which the Ragnarok did in the 2nd fight. Other causes of self-destruction are 80% and sinking (defined as having the CoM below -10m altitude), being AI dead, or being damaged in enemy territory (I don't know the percent for this one). Once the self-destruct timer goes past zero the process begins and cannot be stopped, even if the condition which caused the self-destruct no longer applies. As Lathrix said, none of those conditions apply to player faction vehicles in the designer mode. I should also add that only the "sinking" and "too damaged" conditions apply to player faction units outside of the designer.

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but the Medrengard's shape is a near-masterpiece of design. It's aerodynamic enough to chase down a fleeing target, sloped at such an angle to deflect low-gauge shells and fragments, large enough to distract radar-guided munitions, and the main bulk of the design protects everything in the rear. I don't know anything about the Ragnarök, so I can't really say much about it other than "My god those cannons are lethal."

Warning, text wall inbound. TL;DR, I think you're right about Lathrix designing the Medrengard's hull for looks, but I know this game's physics offer it a significant advantage. True, it is likely that it was only intended for aesthetics, but shells can be deflected at shallow angles, or at least could when I last played. Get a 100mm kinetic cannon using 2 solid bodies, an AP head, and 3 gunpowder casings. Fire it 3 times at an alloy beam perpendicular to any of the flat faces - the shell would most likely break on the alloy all 3 times. Then, do the same thing but repace the target with a 4m sloped beam, firing the cannon at the longest edge - More shells will be deflected. With the low AP value of fragments, the effect will be amplified resulting in more deflections. Taking into consideration the angular front of the Medrengard, it is likely that a good amount of fragments will simply bounce off. There is also some degree of air drag - this can be seen in the builder mode by pressing shift+some other key enough times, or by flying at higher altitudes with ion engines - there will be a rapid speed increase where the air get sthinner at 500m above sea level. At the Medrengard's standard operating altitude, air drag is still relevant, and the angular front should reduce some of this drag, meaning higher speeds can be reached with less thrust needed. Radar does detect targets based on radar return, which is heavily influenced by the shape of different parts (Flat surfaces have a slower return), and size (as there are more parts reflecting the radar). You can test this with the detection-testing item (I forget the name). Look at a smaller vehicle, and test the Radar return. Then look at something Medrengard-sized - it can be detected from much further away. Alternatively, make a small metal platform, and one about twice its size. Set them equal distances from a radar-guided missile, and fire it - it will most likely go for the larger platform. Linking to the Medrengard again, the sheer size and amount of rounded parts make it a magent for radar-guided missiles when compared to other vehicles (although the distance it operates at will almost negate this effect entirely) FtD's detection and armour physics are not all that bad, with all things considered. The force applied by gravity could be better, but that's not really relevant here. One last thing to consider with the Medrengard's design: Its retreat-and-snipe attack pattern. Recoil from its cannons assist with the retreat; this is especially effective becuase the cannons fire in bursts - applying a lot of backward force over a short time. Of course, this could have been mitigated with recoil absorbers.

Also the funniest shit about it was it was stupid slow an so heavy at one point most of it would be under water it was a literal beast. Every battle hed just be getting wacked until he could finally turn sideways and rain death upon people. When he got his ragnorak the jets and the Pilkington they couldn't lose. But the one really had thing was again the ragnorak was so damn big and slow it was a hassle. If im not mistalen He got into a fight once thinking the ragnorak was there but it ended up being a few miles behind his Pilkington and didn't get to fight with it because it was out of range and he hadn't realized. It was hilarious.

Have to admit, I was rooting for the Ragnarök. Though the results do give some hope for my own design philosophy of defense over offense. Although, how much of the end result is thanks to that as opposed to the fact that the Ragnarök is a ship in the water while the Medrengard is a thrustercraft. As I've noted that torpedos are incredibly powerful in FtD; Unlike missiles, they're really difficult to counter. And unlike missiles, they get a hefty damage boost underwater. Still, a good show!

I quite enjoyed that! As I recall the Medgrengard didn't get much screentime during your Neter playthrough, and I remember being disappointed in that because it looks freaking awesome. Good to see it make a return.

Yeah sadly this is very true - I found the Medrengard though being one of my all time favourite creations (And never finished!) It just led to some very boring battles in the campaign, with it moving 2km away from the target and relying on outlasting targets when there are multiples against it, lots of long and hard to record footage! I may fix it up at some point, so much still needs to be done, I really think it's only 70%~~ done at this point!

You didn't see it then BEFORE the nerfs then haha, it was the dominant shell type in almost all situations - It worked so well here because the two AI's were not protected by any 'space armour' so the fragments simply went straight to them, now they have been massively nerfed so that armour layers + air layers effect them far more, honestly It's rare to see HEAT now! HESH is where it's at! ^^

The Ragnaroks cannons used to be extremely powerful. When updates and patches came out it became a lot weaker. Also as you said the medrengard's missiles are outdated. The medrengard has insane armour and defenses. If those anti shell lasers werent there it would have been crippled completely. The Ragnarok has armor but it isn't fullmetal sadly. Torpedoes work super well against it.

However, one thing that did bother me a tiny bit was that the Medrengard was allowed to start in its ideal firing position whereas the Ragnarok was left broadside. I may be incorrect about this, but it looked as if the turrets were still using the 1m turret axis which could explain why they were turning so slowly. I'd be interested to see if the battle would be any different if the Ragnarok and Medrengard were both broadside.

The Ragnarok is a broadside ship, meaning it’s ideal firing position is its side facing the opponent. Notice the shields defending its broadside rather than its front? As well as the bridge blocking two of the main turrets were it to attack head on?

The thing is, to make this actually fair, you should have let the Ragnarok turn its guns. Since it takes such a long time, spawning the Medrenhard facing it is incredibly unfair. Either have then facing each other, or both broadsiding. This favoured one over the other quite substantially, giving the Medrengard almost full half-minute of taking advantage over the fact that the Ragnarok had to turn all its guns 90 degrees to the side.

@@WearyKirin You have control over which way your vehicles face, sure, so by that logic the Ragnarok would probably choose to face the Medrengard at about a 20 degree angle, allowing it to almost immediately fire the two fore turrets, bringing the aft around but still being able to keep firing. A full broadside just stupidly exposes too much of the ship, and for literally NO benefit. A 20 degree means shells are more likely to bounce, the two front guns would be shooting far faster, and all around, it's far fairer. But whatever, it's not a big deal, it's just that these matches were unfairly biased towards the Medrengard.

At 5:23 that "small" internal explosion was actually turret 4 on the Ragnarök was knocked out. By 5:34 you can kind off see its guns' rotation off from the other turrets and when you look back at the Ragnarök at 5:47 this is really evident.

This is a pretty cool video, but I can't help but find the orientation from the start a bit in favor of the Medrengard. The way it's set up it has a really small profile and is ready to instantly fire while retreating backwards.

Yeah but allowing Ragnarök to immediately broadside against the wide side against the Medrengard will be insanely unfair. So it was either to put Medrengard front to Ragnarök's broadside or... Put Ragnarök's front towards Medrengard's wide side. (Sp that it wouldn't be really unfair) And the 2nd option would be quite dragging, as it will not allow the two to unleash their potential but instead having to really maneuver a bunch first before the real exciting part came. The part about the fairness is via the fact that Medrengard is so up front that it has to pretty much tank the brutal first volley of Ragnarök before it can back away. This is giving Ragnarök quite an advantage because it can actually hit most of its shells.

I did enjoy the video; however, I would have liked to see some other variables to the fight. This is the first ever video I've seen of yours so I don't know if your vessel has protection for its sides but it would have been good to simulate a scenario in which you were perhaps flying by a mountain and didn't see the Ragnarök until you were parallel with it or something similar.

The Medrengard can turn in less than 5 seconds and tends to duck during this process so It would give it more time to move backwards - most of the craft is dedicated to either protection or It's moving backwards and turning concept - It would just be a weird weird fight :P I was planning on doing more but didn't want to video to go any longer!

In fairness the ragnarok wasn't meant for fighting fast air vehicles but for brawling it out with other battleships and that's why it was at a disadvantage and lost

Hey lath, you should make a series in which you either design one ship per battle or design a “champion ship” and challenge other KZbinrs to make similar vehicles in terms of cost or volume or both and then the fight, maybe with a theme, mothership round, submarine round, boat round, jet round, thrustercraft round, tank round, and msc. Round; possibly with a design video before hand, one on each channel so we know what the vehicles do/are
