Vice founder Shane Smith managed to get inside of North Korea after a year and half of trying and is witness to the craziness of this hermit nation. Crazy is actually kind of an understatement.
In part 1, Shane and company speak to North Korean refugees living in South Korea, contemplate bribing a consulate in China, an eventually make their way through the DMZ into the land of the Hermit Kingdom.

I periodically come back to this documentary time and time again, and seeing Tea Girl always makes me sad. An innocent bystander who's literally known nothing her entire life, someone who more than likely wishes life was simple. My heart breaks for the people of North Korea, and the things they've been forced into with out any say so.

I agree. I don't think she was in any sort of trouble. The tea shop she works at is part of the approved tour. They (the government minders, tour guides, Pun Yun Chi herself) know for a fact that some visitors would be taking videos. Unless she said anything disparaging about the government, then she's in trouble. Until then, I can reasonably say she was fine.

@shadowberetta it's classic divide and rule. In order to rebel you have to organise and cooperate with others. They make sure anyone in any position to rebel is kept isolated in distrust of their peers. You never know who you can trust and who will sell you out. Kim Jung Un had his own uncle executed just to send that message. Maybe some would love nothing more than to overthrow the government. But the distrust keeps them from organising anything significant.

You know...it really is depressing that some people on here are like, "North Korea is right about what they say about the US!" Or, "I'd rather live in North Korea than the US!" North Korea is one of the worst, if not THE worst country on the planet. Their people have no culture, no freedom, hardly any food and worst of all they are force fed propaganda every day. Want to know why it's better to live in the US than North Korea? You can very well leave whenever you want without being captured or killed. Come on people, THINK!

Bacon Maken I am not saying that living in North Korea is better, oh no! I'd rather live in the US than in North Korea that's for sure, I would not even hesitate for a second. But freedom is only an illusion, in the US or elsewhere, but it just seems that Americans who live in one of the most corrupted country think they have more freedom than in every country in the world. And this is where I wonder how can people be so naive...
@The_FreedomZone
@The_FreedomZone 10 жыл бұрын
Pauline Dusolle I don't think we have total freedom either. Gays aren't given rights, middle eastern people are hated and white males are still more favorable. However, I wouldn't go as far as saying it's one of the most corrupt countries. Maybe one of the most corrupt first world countries.

Throw a rock at the North Koreans at the DMZ. Create an international incident that forces the South and US to invade. Then tag along with fake press credentials and rescue Pun Yun Chi. You will be happy, for a while, as she is excited about her new live with you. Then watch her slowly lose her mind as she struggles to adapt to live in the west and starts to realise just how much of her live was wasted just sitting in an empty tea-house for months on end. She'll realise she has neither the social skills nor education to really find a place in the west. in NK she had a job and a purpose. In the west her place in society is everything but certain or stable. She secretly feels nostalgic and dreams of going back. But you destroyed her country in the process of getting her out. She says she doesn't blame you, but in her heart she silently does and you know that. Over the years you grow distant as you focus on your job and the kids. Until one day you come home and find a note. ... Anyway. Great idea! :D
