VICE makes history on a trip to North Korea to play hoops and meet with supreme leader Kim Jong-un. With NBA great Dennis Rodman and a trio of Harlem Globetrotters in tow, VICE sent Ryan Duffy to the capital of Pyongyang for a tour of the city, a basketball clinic, an exhibition game, and a first-ever meeting between the leader and an American delegation.

That clearly wasnt Google (old logo) so it most likely was some custom made website with a jpeg attached to it, to make it appear as if they dont have limited internet access. It was the fault of the people who choreographed that facade, in not realizing that the cameras would spot the man sitting idley in front of his computer monitor.

“10,000 years” as a saying is pretty standard in Chinese-affiliated cultures. The original saying was “ wanshui aka 万岁”, in Chinese; “banzai, aka wanshui” in Japanese. It’s kind of a way to say “live long and prosper” or “continue to do well”

@@bball3048mmfr Same for me! I have a theory, see if you agree after having watched this: We know that China has re-education camps for people who are caught practicing religion, and they disapprove of believing in any kind of god. I believe they have more metrics to determine if someone believes in a higher power outside of this world than just their personal confession or denouncement of faith. And so if there are simply people who cannot be broken (as in they continue to fail these potentially odd metrics of determination from within their camps) - What if they are sent to North Korea? And so all along North Korea is simply a giant penal colony for Chinese citizens who are seen as "wanting to worship a god". As if to say China is hatefully spiteful towards those who cannot be broken; "if they want to worship a god, they may worship a god". And in truth Kim Jong-un is simply the hired warden, but they are made to be his subjects and worship him as their god as punishment for their crimes of faith. (I do also understand that children are born there, and is an unfortunate consequence). What do you think of this theory to explain the nature of North Korea? And imagine that it is necessary to hide this relationship between China and North Korea from the world for trade relation reasons.

Agree with everything you said, but I don't think the Korean people were clapping for the little girl because they DEEPLY disapprove of individuality. I think at first they thought they were all clapping for the accomplishment of making the ball spin on a child's fingers.. but when they noticed he tried to do it for the next child they caught onto why the Americans were applauding (like as if applauding for the child), and their attitude toward that moment suddenly changed. Watch it again and you'll see.

It really broke my heart hearing the guy who wanted to try to be in the NBA. The people of North Korea have been robbed of so much by their dictator. People in places and situations (citizens ruled by evil dictatorships, human trafficked people, kidnapped children, extreme systemic poverty, etc) all over the world where there is truly no hope to ever even try to chase your dreams… that’s next level sad. Even at the worst times of my life when I felt hopeless, there was always hope. There was always some way, no matter how terrible/hard/almost impossible, that I could change my circumstances. Some people really don’t even have that option.

North Korea doesn't hate the US for its beliefs. North Korea hates the US for what it did to it during the Korean War. And I _don't_ mean completely flattening North Korea; the Vietnam War killed way more people (and way more recently) and yet Vietnam is one of the most pro-American countries in Asia. North Korea hates the US for dividing the Korean nation and establishing a rival country (SOUTH Korea) in their homeland. (North Korea sincerely believes that the US "stole" half of their land and two thirds of their people away from them. They consider the very existence of South Korea to be an "American occupation" of NK's "rightful southern territory." They don't recognize SK's right to exist as a separate and independent nation.) David Straub, a former US diplomat to SK, put it like this; imagine if during the Civil War the British swept in and intervened on the side of the Confederacy, and helped it successfully secede from the Union. Now imagine if today, the Confederate States still existed, and yet somehow became _more_ developed, modern and prosperous than the United States. How angry and bitter would Americans still be at Great Britain if they helped split the American nation in two and set up a more prosperous rival nation within their borders? As long as South Korea continues to exist as a separate and independent nation, North Korea will forever hate the US; they'll never forgive us for helping a separate "False Korea" exist in their homeland.

@@CytotoxinK I see your point, very thought-provoking. My question then, what about what we're told about NK's harsh treatment of their own population? The prison camps, mass starvation, intrusive government surveillance on the families/visitors, and imprisonment of defectors? The overall nature of an authoritarian regime. Assuming those reports are true, can we really turn a blind eye and support a country like this?

Visitors to NK are permanently in a tunnel of state organized theatre sets, you never see anything they don't want you to see. The guy was hand picked to spread an image that NK is both open and connected and taking part in the most complex of science. Nothing about any of this is by accident. The thing is that people designing the propaganda don't really understand how well people from the rest of the world see through manipulation like this because were exposed to so much media. To us, it looks obviously staged and or coerced. Like a ransom video.

You're just assuming now, maybe they all just really love their leader, and genuinely believe that he's this higher power or something which should be cheered for or something. Plus it's no different in basically every other country. Like with the queen for example, whenever she would enter somewhere with a bunch of people and whatnot, there would be a lot of cheering, it's just a pretty standard thing to happen.

Most of them really do have reverence and genuine admiration for their leader. Not every action or gesture in NK is a response to fear or terror. The presence of their leader physically among them is bound to inspire awe in most citizens. I don't know why you would expect it to be different here, to say nothing of the fact the cheer is standard protocol.

Alexander Patrick Criticism of the regime or the leadership in North Korea, if reported, is enough to make you and your family ‘disappear’ from society and end up in a political prison camp. It goes without saying that there is no free media inside the country. The only opinion allowed to be voiced inside the country is the regime’s. It is illegal for the North Korean people to leave their country without the regime’s permission, and the regime attempts to restrict the people’s movement even inside their own country. If you wish to travel to another part of the country, you are supposed to have a specific purpose and obtain permission from your work unit. If you do not live in Pyongyang, the showcase capital where most resources are concentrated, you will likely be denied access. The regime has also forcibly relocated hundreds of thousands of North Koreans to less favorable parts of the country as a form of punishment and political persecution. Who's the real puppet pulling strings in NK?

It's been a while since I watched this documentary, were any political prisoners released during Rodman's visit? Did life get better for any North Koreans after this two week basketball camp? In my humble opinion ambassadors main mission is to make lasting changes around the world, not to be treated like a King for a day and fly out of there having changed nothing. Rodman gave these guys two weeks of basketball, while probably consuming more champagne and lobster than these people will see in a lifetime, he's not my hero.

@@joshuaedwards3322What do you propose? Go in there and demand changes by waging war? Sanction them because of their atrocities? Browbeat them into submission? Alienate and isolate them from the world until they change? NEWFLASH!!! That isn't working either!! This group of individuals have brought more joy, peace, & goodwill to those North Koreans than anything the US has done in the past 70 years. Everything the US has done, it has done nothing to better or improve the plight of North Koreans. If anything they've made life worse. Stop being the wind & be the sun. It's not force that's going to evoke change, it's warmth.

They tortured and killed him actually. But he was kind of stupid. You can break the rules and they won't even really be mad at you, but do anything that they may interpret as an insult to the leaders or system and that's something else to them.
