What's crazy is that some people lived long enough to be around when both films were made.

I’m so glad you uploaded a comparison! This entire episode is one of my favorite miniseries moments. It’s not depicted in either of your uploads, but in this final episode there’s a scene when Méliès is discussing the narrative of the film with his apprentice while it plays on a projector, and the transition from the rocket igniting in his film into Apollo 17’s departure gave me chills because it shows just how far humanity has come in terms of our progress from simply fantasizing about what the moon could be to actually sending twelve manned missions to land on its surface. Think about that - only 62 years passed between the release of _Le Voyage dans la Lune_ and the Apollo 11 mission. That film came out in the same year that the Wright brothers flew the first airplane. Still blows my mind.

yes, it was a brilliant idea to merge the making of the movie with the series the shot of Alan Shepard sleeping on the moon with the scene of Melies sleeping on the moon is amazing too

It's a terrible tragedy that the film maker of "From the Earth to the Moon" had his movie stolen by agents of Thomas Edison and shown in America without a dime going to the creator - who was made bankrupt from the loss. Luckily for him, the French government eventually awarded him a small pension and so could have some comfort in his old age.

Not the only time this asshole Edison did shit like that. He was a cold blooded businessman without any humanity in him.

It’s such a great picture and I’m always amazed by Monsieur Méliès’ genius and visionary work. Hopefully, we shall one day hold him in as high esteem as Spielberg,Lucas, Scorsese,Jackson or any number of legendary directors.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Robin Williams (god rest his soul) was originally offered the role of Melies for this documentary. Or was written for Williams since it would’ve been perfect for him.

How utterly marvellous. This reconstruction of the filming brought a smile to my face. What I wouldn't give to have been there watching "Le Voyage dans la Lune" as it was filmed .When are we going to get a proper biopic about Monsieur Melies? Why is he being over-looked? It's a crime.

Honestly this just makes me appreciate A Trip to the Moon even more now, it’s a true classic in every sense of the word and this makes it even more heartwarming and awesome to see what it was actually like for them to film the actual film itself and how they did it back then in the day. Also, is that Tom Hanks?!?

I wonder if Méliès onset behavior is accurate as depicted in this film? If so then it shows that directors or rather the entire filming industry as a whole (well rather the same could be said about Capitalism itself) has always been scummy that are riddled with abusers if they kept blowing up at cast members over the slightest mistakes like that due to their constant demand of 'perfection' which is sadly still going on today as if nothing has changed over a century ago.
