One of the most beautifully shot super 8 shots here on youtube. No stuttery 18fps, no jerky shakey handcamera but actually wonderfully framed scenes with a photographic aesthetic. Really beautiful. And it's a good idea to have sharpened the image a little bit and trying to fight the terrible youtube compression a bit. At many times you could actually spot the filmgrain. I almost thought you had shot most of it at 36fps to slow down everyones movements a little bit for a really comforting effect. But i don't think this camera has anything faster than 24fps. I guess the smoother movements are a result of the shutterblade that doesn't seem to be 180° bit more open... like 150° or so. Like those Shutter blades on XL Super 8 cameras.

Really appreciate the feedback. I do tend to like the whole rough and tumble aesthetic of super 8, but this was just a product of breaking the mold a bit. I’m glad you found it affecting! As for the frame rate, this was all shot at 24, then slowed down slightly in post.

This is really beautiful. I have to say, one of the things I like most about this is that there isn't a single shot of someone on their phone. It really adds to it's timeless, honest quality. I just shot my first cartridges of 50D on the same camera. Hoping they come out as nicely as yours.

Thanks Evan. 50d is awesome. I’d just say to scan it at at least 2k to get the most out of it. Hope it turns out well.

Really beautiful work! I just bought a Canon 1014 AZ and did a test shot with a fresh roll of 50D but later found out that the film was not proceeding the whole time and ended up not being exposed at all (the motor works fine tho). The sprocket turned out to be broken too. I know some ppl also have encountered this in the past so just wanted to ask if this a common issue for all Canon super 8 cams. Also, if possible, there's any way this could be avoided/fixed? Really appreciate it!
@jordanshankman6 ай бұрын
Thank you! As long as the motor in the camera is working fine, it was most likely a bad cartridge. I’ve experienced a jammed roll or two that wouldn’t advance and the sprocket holes ripped as a result. Definitely not common though.

This really is beautiful. It just shows what 8mm can achieve when used properly. Everything is focused beautifully. Did you set the lens to a hyperfocal distance, for example 10 feet at 10mm?

I’ve always found super 8 to be really forgiving, so aside from getting decent exposure, I rarely got caught up in the technical details. Thanks so much for the kind words.

this is such a lovely video! i was wondering if you used a light meter to set the aperture as it was manual? and if so, what light meter was it? thanks!! :)
@jordanshankman2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Yilin! Yes, I manually exposed and used a Sekonic L-308XU. Vision 3 has great dynamic range though and allows for a lot of color and exposure correction in post, especially if a LOG scan is performed.

Hello, with this Canon super 8 is there a way to format the video for fullscreen on youtube instead of having the wide black borders?
@jordanshankman5 жыл бұрын
Joshua Edwards Yes, you would need to zoom into the native 4:3 Super 8 aspect ratio in a 16:9 timeline with your editing software. However this would cut off the top and bottom of the image.

This looks amazing! I'm trying to use super8 for the first time. I also have AZ 814 but I wanted to use the internal odometer. Have you used any separate light meter and filter85, or maybe you have changed the temperature in post-production?
@jordanshankman6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Do you mean you want to use the internal light meter? I have to manually expose on my 814 because the light meter is broken, but otherwise I would use the auto exposure if it worked. Because I shot on 200t and 500t, I engaged the 85 filter (with the sun symbol showing) for most of my shots since there was a lot of natural light. I didn't need to change much in post. Thanks for watching!

Did you cut a notch on 500T cartridge? Do you remember wich stock is when on this video? I'm still not sure should I use 500T or 200T

@melindajames10366 жыл бұрын
great job! i have an 814 aze and i'm about to shoot a test roll and learn how to manually expose. i think you get much better results when you do. did you tend to set your aperture at what your meter suggested, or underexpose a little? i prefer the contrast and shadows you get in the blacks from underexposing.
@jordanshankman6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I actually tended to over expose by 1/2 - 1 stop. I've found I have a much easier time pulling up the shadows in post when it's a little over exposed rather than trying to make up for lost information. I always have a log (raw) scan of the negatives done which allows me to exposure correct a ton after the fact.
@aboutherfilms6 жыл бұрын
thanks for the info, jordan. i'll give overexposing a try the next time i shoot super8. i actually underexposed a stop for this last piece i shot. would love to get your thoughts on it. i also had a log scan and color corrected myself. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m329gZpvlNisfMU
