Mohammed Azharuddin after scoring 3 successive centuries in first 3 tests said that Greg Chappel was his idol and role model. Can see some traces of Greg in Azzas offside shots. Ofcourse, Chappell is an all time great after Bradman in Australia , and I believe that post Bradman Greg chappell is the best Australian and one of the greatest middle order batsman produced in the world along with sachin tendulkar and viv richards.

I'll add Steve Smith and Ponting to the list. Sachin is ofc deserving a place there imo. Haven't seen a batsman who is more underrated than Greg Chappell.

You see in this video Greg Chappell acknowledging the crowd and NOT the players' box when he reaches 100...no over the top ridiculous celebrations we see often today...The bowlers of that era also did not over celebrate got on with the game and demonstrated HUMILITY...of course they weren't being paid as much as today's prima-donas.

We do know for the next two tests however that Andy Roberts had his number including a first ball duck in the second test and clean bowled in the third
@evanaskew66528 жыл бұрын
I think Roberts got him with a throat ball in the first innings of the third test and Croft got him lbw for 34 in the second innings of the third test. In the second test you can get youtube footage of Joel Garner roughing him up before getting him for 19 skying a hook shot to Derryck Murray. I think by this stage the Windies were starting to trouble him which the following series in 81/82 shows. But that is no disgrace. Greg Chappell had already showed in this series and in world series cricket that he could score runs against the west indies and if you include his wsc stats I would wager he would be the best performed Australian batsman against the great windies pace attacks that spans the period from 1975 to 1999.

@@jugheadsrule Well, If a selfish player and captain can beat Australian in their game and brought many glories to the country with 11000 ODI runs as against 2300 peanut runs in ODI of Greg since 1971(1971-1983)and fail to lead Australian to win over WI, what is the use of averages in Test with tally figure of 7200 runs. When given leadership, a clueless and coward leader provoked his brother to throw underarm bowl. Perceptions differs when we love one and hate others. Facts only say the greatness of Ganguly over Greg as Captain, Batsman, Administrator, Leader. No match either as a person or leader. Australians also admired Ganguly as a tough opponent but never liked to repeat under arm ball, never given coaching to Greg.
