Notice how no WI batsmen were wearing helmets? No short boundaries - no bats like power rockets, just great batting and wonderful memories of a great player. Thanks for uploading.

Well said. Was thinking the same thing. Every time the ball beats the infield these days, it’s a boundary because of the smaller fields and power bats.
@Bernie83305 жыл бұрын
Greenidge mostly wore a helmet in test cricket post world series, and did in one day cricket too. This was against Sri Lanka when they were minnows. Also, right up until the end of the 1980s a lot of Australian batsmen only wore helmets against the west indies, such as Greg Chappell, Kim Hughes, Allan Border, Dean Jones, Steve Waugh and Graeme Wood.

Gordon Greenidge had the most severe cut shots i've ever seen ! Its amazing he wore that unique hat throughout the chase making a mockery of the total 202 in just 38 overs. Another rare is SRL sporting yellow instead of blue. A great upload ! 👌🏻👍

Childhood memories!!! WI was no:1 those days, especially in ODI. What a team that was!!! Batting plus bowling. Late 70's and early 80's. Never seen a more powerful team than that until now. Present WI team brings so much shame to those legends of that era.

A batting style that would not look out of place today. Nearly-upright, still head, and body , balanced at the crease, waiting for the ball. Then a simple move backward or forward depending on the length of the ball before throwing his hands at it. Kept his shape wonderfully well despite giving everything a good whack. Unique combination of power and poise. He would earn millions today.

Of all the hard-hitters I have seen, no one had the bat speed that Greenidge had...especially square on the off-side the bat-speed is unbelievable! He doesn't start his back swing until the ball is onto him - such confidence in how quickly he can get the follow-through completed in mere milli-seconds...just wow!

Gordon grenidge the master opener and master blaster one heck of opener west Indies finest opener by long shot combined with Desmond Haynes they were greatest opener's the world has ever seen even stastictic wise at there best there were unstoppable and blasseted ever cricket nation to utter chaos
@arunminnas3 жыл бұрын
He should also have been called the master blaster but unfortunately he played in Viv's era and the same team. He could be brutal when needed. he would have been their best batsman but for Viv. Any other Era, he would have been much more celebrated.

Flays is the right word here. Means to remove the skin of something, like a fish before frying it. That is what he did here, flayed the lankans, hard shots all over.
@vika-br8sh5 жыл бұрын
yeah, flayed is what you will describe this...just hearing the sound of bat hitting the ball will convince that greenidge is having a good day with the bat like one of his peer, viv richards. but with greenidge, we get to see master class type of fine stylish drives, flicks, graceful, smooth , what timing, what style phew, much much better than viv richards. if he had a whip instead of bat, he would have used it to flay the skin off the bone of his victim, like a Bosun pirate does when captain wants some one whipped for insolence. top class, master class of a batsman, words are not enough to describe. only thing viv had over greeniedge is his macho flamboyant playboy kind of image and raw aggressive power, sort of an Alpha male. lets not forget Deszi (desmond haynes), equally talented, just about the most perfect opening batsmen you will ever get to see ever, next only to ganguly - tendlki
@cauldron55511 күн бұрын
Strange to hear this comment that Greenidge outstripped the normally free scoring Desmond Haynes in this innings. Greenidge was generally the one that both 'agreed' would be the more aggressive. Haynes was known for being a bit more composed with his batting. But he could also absolutely go berserk on the bowling when he got in the mood.

Ceylon in those days was equal to a public school side of England or India. Greenidge's innings should be considered a favour from an inferior, non-first-class bowling side.
