From the Vault - The Flying Scotsman and 3801 Climb Tumulla - now in High Definition and Widescreen

With the 2023 Bathurst Steam Weekend only weeks away, I thought you might like to see how it was 34 years ago when the Flying Scotsman and 3801 climbed Tumulla Bank in the very early morning of 10th June 1989.
I was initially hesitant about uploading this video. It is not my video but one I purchased on VHS when it was released in 1990 or 1991. I was also concerned about how well it would upscale given its age and source. However it shows a really historic and spectacular event that cannot and will not be repeated.
I hope you enjoy watching the video, or perhaps watching it again but for the first time in widescreen.
The story of the video is that on the evening of 9th June 1989 the Flying Scotsman and 3801 hauled a special recreation of the Through West Mail, the train arriving at Bathurst and then its climb of the Tumulla Bank just after dawn. Fortunately the trip was captured by Train Movies on their now long out print VHS release "Flying Scotsman The Night Mail". The story of the making of the video was contained in Issue 3 of Pacific Railway, now also long out of print.
The train was scheduled to climb Tumulla in darkness but as the article states "The numerous delays endured through the night ensured, to our relief, that we would be able to capture in daylight what we hoped would be a spectacular ascent." The two video crews following the train managed to record about 15 minutes of the climb.
The Train Movies video release covered the full trip from Central to Dubbo running for 75 minutes, followed by a short documentary of the line.
