Prince didn't give her this song. Their label did, without his permission (labels don't need permission because they own your artwork and your persona as a performer). He was pissed that she released this song and it did better than it did when he released it. She made it a worldwide phenomenon. He even invited her to his mansion and scolded her.

It is.. especially even more so now that she's gone. She was a beauty like Hepburn with the heart of a warrior and the courage only a mother could have. Her mother had mental illness and was abusive toward her, kicking and punching her throughout her entire childhood. But in an interview, an older O'Connor said that she wishes her mother were there right then so she could hold her and love her and be a mother for /her/, and tell her everything would be alright.

The tears just after 'All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard . . . ' you can feel her pain through the screen. I too think of my mother, long gone but never out of my heart, and of our yard, lined with the roses she grew and was so proud of - I can't listen to that part of the song and keep a dry face. This is one of the greatest breakup songs ever written - the strength of her performance is the anger and frustration paired equally with the sorrow and loss. Not a break up song, not with a Lover anyway. It is her talking to her mother who abused her in every respect, thus the Mama who planted the flowers in the backyard. It is a cathartic awakening. As a fellow abused, she had no way to understand what was happening to her, she just knew she had to eventually get away. Now as adult, she is finally ready to forgive, having dealt with the intense pain, sadness, emptiness knowing that she should of not be treated as she was, she (like most victims) as a child was still desperate for Love from her abuser. You are bang on the anger and frustration is part of her coming towards acceptance, and her realization of all the sorrow and loss she had to go through to become a functioning adult, still wanting Love from her parent, even though the pain given. She finally was ready to forgive her abuser, and become a fully functioning Adult within as well as outwardly.

The thing that always got me about this video is how she looks up at the camera and then back down, much like she is spilling her heart out face to face with someone she loves. Songs are just songs to many musicians, but I feel she genuinely related to this song and the emotions of losing someone truly came through.

I still wanna cry (and tear up sometimes) when I see this video. Her emotions are so intimate and raw here. She unfortunately was abused by her mother. She added in the “mama” part because she filmed it shortly after her mom passed away. What we see and feel is her pain, but however it’s interpreted by the viewer, we can relate to her from our own painful experiences. Beautiful voice and beautiful woman. ♥️

💜Back story on this song that Prince wrote! He said that he could write a song about anything & if I didn't believe before (I did but) I sure do now! This song is not about love. When he was in the midst of having Paisley Park built, touring & recording his housekeeper who basically ran his life but left because her father was ill. She took care of everything for him. He asked when she was coming back & was told she wasn't. The reference of " its been 7 hours & 13 days" is when he asked about her coming back. The "since you've been gone I can do whatever I want & eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant" is him being a bit reckless eating out instead of her cooking for him/making sure he ate right or at all, "all the flowers that you planted in the back yard all died when you went away" she made sure his house was run smoorh & esp. "I know that living with me was sometimes hard but I'm willing to give it another try", he wasn't the easiest person to work for esp. W/his schedule & lifestyle , but she was really good & he wanted her back. Genius!!!💜

It's hard to call this song a cover because it was basically written for her. He had every intention of her doing this song as he wrote it. The tears were real by the way. The crying wasn't scripted but she started thinking about her mother who had recently passed away. The tears came and she decided to carry on through them. I've seen this video hundreds of times over decades and she still breaks my heart.

Prince had no intention of making Sinead sing this song. He wrote it five years before the cover for one of his side projects, The Family. Prince said to Susan Rogers that he did not like Sinead's cover and that in general he did not want anyone to cover his songs. Over the years, the two of them (Prince and Sinead) developed a terrible relationship. That said, her version, in my opinion, is by far the most beautiful and iconic. She really made this song her own.

@@danalynch8889 Yep. You can't "cover" a song that has never been performed or recorded. He wrote it but she performed it first. Most artists perform songs written by someone else. That doesn't make them a cover.

I always thought "since you've been gone I can do whatever I want" is such a powerful lyric for how simple and straightforward it is.
