I think her song "Troy" is a better break up song. If you haven't heard it, you should.
@toddstevens133 жыл бұрын
Not a break up song, not with a Lover anyway. It is her talking to her mother who abused her in every respect, thus the Mama who planted the flowers in the backyard. It is a cathartic awakening. As a fellow abused, she had no way to understand what was happening to her, she just knew she had to eventually get away. Now as adult, she is finally ready to forgive, having dealt with the intense pain, sadness, emptiness knowing that she should of not be treated as she was, she (like most victims) as a child was still desperate for Love from her abuser. You are bang on the anger and frustration is part of her coming towards acceptance, and her realization of all the sorrow and loss she had to go through to become a functioning adult, still wanting Love from her parent, even though the pain given. She finally was ready to forgive her abuser, and become a fully functioning Adult within as well as outwardly.

I was going to say Prince wrote this just as you said it. Not many realize how great of a songwriter/composer he truly was. Sad day in history when he died

What a haunting voice she has.. I think she was thinking about her mum that she had lost, which is why it's so damn raw and emotional... I love this song. Great track. Thank you for another great video upload. Really enjoying your reaction vids. Please try Kate Bush Army Dreamers, or any of her tracks. Thank you from England once again.. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

This was a brilliant video to go with a masterclass version of this song. Her face conveys so much it overwhelms with emotion.

It's hard to call this song a cover because it was basically written for her. He had every intention of her doing this song as he wrote it. The tears were real by the way. The crying wasn't scripted but she started thinking about her mother who had recently passed away. The tears came and she decided to carry on through them. I've seen this video hundreds of times over decades and she still breaks my heart.

I was thinking the same thing that you can't call this a cover.

Prince had no intention of making Sinead sing this song. He wrote it five years before the cover for one of his side projects, The Family. Prince said to Susan Rogers that he did not like Sinead's cover and that in general he did not want anyone to cover his songs. Over the years, the two of them (Prince and Sinead) developed a terrible relationship. That said, her version, in my opinion, is by far the most beautiful and iconic. She really made this song her own.

@@kriskelvin5775 It doesn't matter what your wiki says. The original recording and release of this song is Sinead's. Prince started performing it AFTER it became a hit by her.
@mckrackin53243 жыл бұрын
@@danalynch8889 Yep. You can't "cover" a song that has never been performed or recorded. He wrote it but she performed it first. Most artists perform songs written by someone else. That doesn't make them a cover.

@@mckrackin5324 Maybe you're the one who should drop Wikipedia. The single was released a few years ago, but the song was recorded and released on the B-Side of the '85 album. Do you want me to send you a picture of the vinyl on my shelf? The fantastic world of the internet, full of ignoramus talking about things they don't know shit about.

This song is heart, wrenching and whomever created and directed. This video. Knew exactly what they were doing when they stuck her in front of this black screen just singing the song it was so impactful.

I always thought "since you've been gone I can do whatever I want" is such a powerful lyric for how simple and straightforward it is. Especially the way she delivers it in this song like it sounds liberating but you just know that there's a lot of sadness behind it. She doesn't wanna do whatever she wants even though she's kinda bragging about how she can

I've always admired and respected Sinead O'Connor, for as long as I can remember. She's fearless and will fight for truth and right. Such an unbelievable shame that she was dismissed as crazy. Rest in peace, finally. My beautiful warrior queen

I love this video. The focus on her face, forces you to look into her oh, so expressive eyes. She doesn't need a huge thing, with whole body in order to express her feeling in this. Just those eyes.

Way more emotional. Hits the "heart" hard. As an aside, Iove Chris Cornells voice too. Have you ever heard of Anthony Vincent? If not, he's an imitator. He sang Billie Eilish's song "No Time To Die" in Chris Cornells' style. Perfection (imo).

I remember very clearly the first time I saw it. It was a mind blower. the simplicity of her beautiful, emotional face literally in your face just pouring those emotions out in an extremely intimate way which was incredible considering millions would see it... just a masterpiece of a performance.

Part of the reason she shaved her head was nobody really.looked at her talent, just how she looked.

I kind of thought of her hairstyle as a gimmick at the time, which I regret. I used to (and kinda still do) scoff at gimmicks, but it worked for Sia, and David Bowie, and Kiss, and on and on. But looking back at Sinead, or Annie Lennox, I now look at their styles more as courageous for breaking norms, even if the deeper reasons for some might be darker than that.

To be fair, many of her own songs are bad. Nothing great to them and if she wasn't known or had a 'look' (or politics) or did this song, very few people would even know who she is today. Just going by her own music, she would have gone away by 1995, which was not uncommon at all. Endless female (and male) singers/bands were dead in the water by the 1990s if not 1980s (depending on when they started and their style). Even Queen didn't really make it beyond 1991. I think she's more talented than most of her songs show, and she has a great voice. Her version of this song is a masterpiece, though. I need to check out more of her songs to see if I just picked the bad ones or not.

I always get this young Wynonna Ryder vibe when I watch this video. You can even hear the similar tones in her voice when Sinead sings the ..."To You" part. Very simple, yet very haunting. Loved it. 💗
