Crocheting two Victorian purses before the ball was a bit ambitious, but I did manage to finish them once I got bak home. I learned a lot in the process, but I am very happy with how they turned out. and they both fit my phone (...without the case on)!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

My new Mugs: www.etsy.com/listing/1461951286/knitting-keeps-me-from-unravelling-mug It took a bit longer to finish the bags, but I am very happy with how they turned out! Which crochet purse do you prefer? Or maybe you like the silk bags best?

I used a size 4 steel hook to put "pearls" on #10 crochet thread for a bracelet. That was enough for me to say never again, so your perseverance is impressive. And I love the looped beading on the sides. Well done!

I once tried to make some knit "cinderella" gloves that had beadwork. Yeah I made one glove. Made the fingers too short, had to redo them all, and when I ripped them down I decided it was not worth it. (Having to break the yarn several times also may have made the point of never trying again.) 🙃

I love how you're building a knitting journals community! I keep one for my sewing, a spiral-bound graph paper notebook that reminds me of the lab notebooks that we were required to keep in high school chemistry. It's helped me a lot to take notes on what goes wrong and what I'd like to try differently next time a la chem lab, especially as I'm developing my own patterns and doing a lot of trial and error with different construction methods. The idea that our crafting journals could be future dress historians' primary sources is so funny and cool. "Ah yes," future historians might say, "some transmascs found French seams less itchy than other seam finishes of the period." This whole project of yours is such fun to follow along with and these bags turned out so pretty!

About the stickers - have you ever considered selling printable versions of your knitting journal stickers? I would love to order some but I live all the way in East Africa and the shipping and customs fee would likely cost several times the price of the actual stickers lol. A printable alternative would be a great way for us to enjoy the designs without having to deal with all of that. Just a thought! Loved the video as always.

An easy way to pick up spilled beads is to put a sock over the end of a vacuum hose turn on the vacuum and all the beads are now on the sock. Turn the vacuum off and they will drop into your container

If you get more into beading crochet, i know there's these neat spinny things to more easily get those tiny beads onto the needle without threat of spilling. (I get tiktok videos about it, but that's the extent of my knowledge)

They are stunning and what a piece of art they are. I found another solution for my walking skirts, they huuuuuuge pockets with loops inside (biastape). In this loops I can insert small hooks for my purse, my phone and so on. So I don't have to carry a bag with me, and NOBODY can play pick-pocket with me :O)))))

So pretty! Great job! I have a love/hate relationship with beaded crochet; I love the final result, and hate stringing the beads onto the thread! More so, the seemingly endless task of sliding the beads down to expose thread with which to actually crochet.

I’ve had similar experience with beadwork, and the easiest thing is just to restring every one in a while. Otherwise, you just need to give yourself a lot of slack to move the beads back as the creep closer to your work. Also, I think it’s very fun to see the “mistakes” because you can see similar “mistakes” in antique beadwork, too. I always love to peruse Etsy looking at new old stock of steel cut beads and antique miser’s purses for sale. Unfortunately, a lot of the purses and strings of beads I come across are almost always rusted. Not even sure if there’d be a way to safely clean the purses, but possibly the individual beads (not attached to purses) could be cleaned. Idk, it might be worth checking out for any future purses.

If you end up doing more work where you need to string a lot of beads I highly recommend a bead spinner. There are manual ones, but I could never spin it properly, so I got one that is battery powered and it's amazing. Of course I found out about them AFTER I knitted a large mohair lace shawl and manually added over 3000 seed beads, one by one.

These are great! I love looking at antique knit/crochet bags online and hope to reproduce more someday. If you want to do more beaded projects in the future, I've found that size 15 seed beads are the closest in size to Victorian beads. Potomac Bead Company is a great online shop that should have all the colors you could want. Faceted steel beads are trickier though - generally I have to trawl etsy for antique bead lots if I want those XD

an idea for stringing beads, I've scene a woman do this with lace weight yarn and beads, , hank the thread, vs ball string a manageable number of beads run then almost all the way to the end ball than, string more and ball and so forth, so as you work beads come up in the ball every few wraps, that way your never sliding 100 plus beads at a given time its much more 'set up, but allows you to work undistracted by beading more mid project.
