Max Power That wouldn't work for a number of reasons. Namely, they would have to buy them as they continue to be created with ever higher valuations. Many people wouldn't sell to the government, knowing this would happen, and they would profit greatly. One bitcoin can be split quite a bit, so a subset of bitcoins would still perform the same function as the whole. And finally, a different cryptocurrency would simply fill the gap. But really, it would be cheaper to hack bit-coin and subvert it. But why would they bother. It doesn't appear to be taking off in its current form.
