Great quote, it wasn't true though imo. The best Fall lineups, gigs and recordings were made up of well rehearsed, hard-working and dedicated individuals.

@kevlavis87364 жыл бұрын
@@kwd-kwd I believe the actual quote was "If it's me and your Granny on Bongos then it's a Fall gig". Steve Hanley was still in the Fall when Mark said it. On the plane after Mark had sacked half the band, and they were on their way to the next gig, Steve said "Where's your Granny on Bongos now?" to which Mark replied "Fuck off Hanley". *edit* And just because Mark said it, doesn't mean I have to agree with it! I think sometimes people mistake Mark E Smith for the Fall. Don't get me wrong it's a great quote, and Mark was a genius, I just think it discredits the band members a tad. Very misunderstood story. True version is - stage lights came up during a gig and the soundman was eating a salad Smith had given specific instructions about the light show, and rightly felt for an hour or two a night he had to work he should focus on his job. Much like the 'brown m&ms' story which is used to call rock bands divas with ridiculous riders, but the reality was explained later by David Lee Roth - "Van Halen was the first to take 850 par lamp lights - huge lights - around the country,"Roth said. "At the time, it was the biggest production ever." In many cases, the venues were too outdated or inadequately prepared to set up the band's sophisticated stage. "If I came backstage, having been one of the architects of this lighting and staging design, and I saw brown M&Ms on the catering table, then I guarantee the promoter had not read the contract rider, and we would have to do a serious line check" of the entire stage setup, Roth said.
