@@kwd-kwd I believe the actual quote was "If it's me and your Granny on Bongos then it's a Fall gig". Steve Hanley was still in the Fall when Mark said it. On the plane after Mark had sacked half the band, and they were on their way to the next gig, Steve said "Where's your Granny on Bongos now?" to which Mark replied "Fuck off Hanley". *edit* And just because Mark said it, doesn't mean I have to agree with it! I think sometimes people mistake Mark E Smith for the Fall. Don't get me wrong it's a great quote, and Mark was a genius, I just think it discredits the band members a tad. I saw Mark perform with Ed Blainey, with Mark on glockenspiel and Ed on guitar, it was far from a Fall gig! Peace.

@@iain2080 It may not all be strictly true but it IS great. Especially those sorta "stream-of-consciousness" interludes; "...where have all the lithe smooth-headed youth gone with their bags of sub-quality bugle and their girlfriends with coffee-stain tans..." (I'm paraphrasing but they have a real elegiac and wistful quality to them). Both The Hanley Bros. books are well worth a read too especially if you like recording minutiae...I love Steve and Paul's differing ways of describing the gestation of "Iceland" in the studio, it makes the hairs on the back of your neck tingle, like the song! I'm still not convinced as to what "roll up for the underpants show" means though tbh!

Very misunderstood story. True version is - stage lights came up during a gig and the soundman was eating a salad Smith had given specific instructions about the light show, and rightly felt for an hour or two a night he had to work he should focus on his job. Much like the 'brown m&ms' story which is used to call rock bands divas with ridiculous riders, but the reality was explained later by David Lee Roth - "Van Halen was the first to take 850 par lamp lights - huge lights - around the country,"Roth said. "At the time, it was the biggest production ever." In many cases, the venues were too outdated or inadequately prepared to set up the band's sophisticated stage. "If I came backstage, having been one of the architects of this lighting and staging design, and I saw brown M&Ms on the catering table, then I guarantee the promoter had not read the contract rider, and we would have to do a serious line check" of the entire stage setup, Roth said.

The sound quality is good, apart from the soundguy(s) having neutralised most of Smith's trademark interventions. The track listing is wrong; the whole first part of '50 year old man' is tucked after 'wolf kidult man'.
