Well, does a train journey review get any better than this? This maintained high interest value throughout the trip with some focus on the essential details - meals, scenery, bedding, costs, stops, passenger comfort and basic amenities. Added information was even offered with station altitudes, especially interesting around the Drummond Ranges, and populations of regional towns. An outstanding, comprehensive travel video! I would love to see you do one on the Westlander: Roma Street to Charleville :).

This is a great video. It brings back many fond memories. I rode the Spirit of the Outback from Longreach to Brisbane in the early 2000s. It was one of the best train trips that I have ever taken. I lived in Melbourne from 1999 to 2005. Being a fan of Qantas, I wanted to see the Qantas Museum and experience the Outback. I flew to Longreach and took the train back to Brisbane. I organized a hire car for use in Brisbane. When I told the agent the time I would arrive in Brisbane, she said the office would be closed. But not to worry! They left the keys and contract in the car. That, needless to say, caught this Texan’s breath. While in Australia I also rode the Tilt Train, The Spirit of Queensland, Indian Pacific, The Ghan, and The Overland. Yep, I am a train buff. I was sent to Australia by my employer for a two year assignment. I liked it so much that I arranged to stay for nearly six years. It is a great country.

I remember seeing the ground flying past the bottom of the toilet chute on the old train from Kalgoorlie to Port Pirie in the late 1950s: a bit scary for a 6 year old. It was diesel but a steam train for the side trip to Adelaide. Had to change trains and gauges again in Albury! We would drive from Bunbury to Kalgoorlie then put the car on the train as the Nullarbor was unpaved and slow: 2-3 day trip with bull dust everywhere and no motel until an old cinder block relic in Eucla

A memory of the trip from Longreach to Brisbane and return. It was a steam engine to Emerald from Longreach getting to Emerald around 11pm. They used 2 steam engines to get over the Drummond Range. Arrive in Rockhampton around 9 or 10am, with a lay over until 5 or 6pm if catching the Brisbane Rocky mail train, 9pm if catching the Sunlander from Cairns to Brisbane. Gympie was the morning stopover if catching the Rocky-Brisbane mailtrain as it had no showers or dining facilities. Passengers had showers at Gympie followed by breakfast. Lunch was bought at one of the stops where sandwiches were available. A lot different to now. My last journey to Longreach return was in 1977, not a lot had changed then other than diesel engine and no longer the mail train available. No air conditioning on the mail train.

Interesting that you stopped in Anakie. When I was at primary school here in London (UK) we had a teacher come over on an exchange visit from a primary school in Anakie. When she went home, she asked her pupils if they wanted to be penpals with anyone at our school, and those that did sent a batch of letters for our teachers to distribute to us. In assembly one morning we were asked who wanted a penpal in Australia, and I put my hand up. The teacher said that she had a great one for me, as someone had written who had the same first and surname as me!! We wrote back and forth for a while and learned that even our sisters had the same name! I recall his dad was a miner. But eventually the letters dried up and we lost touch. I occasionally still think of him, and wonder whether he might still be living Anakie.

I did the Spirit of The Outback a couple of years ago. Not only is Longreach a fabulous destination, but getting the train to and from is an absolute bonus adventure in itself. Yes it is a bit dated but functional, food and staff great and it's something different. I travelled with someone so we had a twin sleeper, which is the same as the single sleeper but the with partition removed, so you face each other. Definitely feels more spacious. The lounge car was out of service on our trips, and was replaced with the replacement dining car shown in this journey. Coming in to Longreach it was already dark and we were treated to a lightening display as we rolled in. If you're thinking about doing this trip, do it!

I'm liking your new style live commentary! Hahahaha.... I absolutely suck at it. I've realised I can never ever sleep on the train. I recently did the XPT sleeper and I was awake the entire time. Urgh. So on that trip I was awake for 3 whole days. Enjoyed the video!

Thanks so much Ryan! I’m not very good at sleeping on trains myself … the things you’re willing to do for KZbin. 🙊😂 Someone told me I should do more pieces to camera, so figured I’d give it a go. It’s easier to do when you have a private cabin … I’m a bit more reluctant in an open carriage / cabin. ☺️

Hi Maureen. Thanks so much. Yes, it was a wonderful trip. I was in New Zealand for a few week so that put a hold on things but hopefully can get things moving again now. Merry Christmas to you too!

Thank you! The return was booked as a through trip with a connecting flight to Adelaide so was over $600 but standard fares between Longreach and Brisbane are about $250.

Damn, it's been almost 3 years since I took this trip. Totally worth it, especially if you can do it in summer when they run their two for one deal - plus a lot less people in general means the lounge is all nice and spacious. They're small cabins, but absolutely perfect for the length of the trip and I got a good sleep each way.

Reminds me of the Budd cars they use in Canada, I believe they call them Hep cars. I love diesel passenger trains.

Great video, Adam. I travelled on the Spirit back in ‘14. I think I may have been in your cabin (5). It hasn’t changed very much at all since then. It was a great trip, tho the bed is good if you’re under 6ft. Unfortunately, I’m not. Otherwise, it was excellent.

Thanks so much Ben. Yes, I get the impression it hasn’t changed much. I can see that height would be an issue. Thanks for watching!
