Hi Jim I have a rather annoying clunking noise coming from my 2010 Ford Focus 1.6 ti-vct zetec s it makes a single clunk when you just start moving in reverse and then I can put it in first gear and drive forward and the same noise happens I have looked on auto data and it says to clean and coat the driveshaft hub splines with locktite I have had the car jacked up and tried to hold the cv joint while rocking the wheel back and forwards and can’t feel any free play have you ever heard of this fault thanks ps I replaced both front bearings last year due to roughness and I replaced the 13mm hub bolts and torqued them to spec I have also check all suspension components which all tested okay and I have removed and inspected all 3 engine mounts which tested okay as well

Suprisingly enough yes I have heard that before and saw a car have that problem, assuming it is this problem- you will not feel any freeplay as the movement is minimal and only detectable when under load like you said above... Autodata is correct in the method to fix the problem, it is indeed to loosen the driveshaft and push it back in the hub as far as it can go, clean it up as best possible and coat the hub / driveshaft splines it in the permanent loctite it recommends. Replace the 13mm bolt and torque it to spec and let the loctite dry. Also on a side note, I have also had the same symptoms from cheap aftermarket brake discs that move slightly underload causing the clunk as they tap the wheel studs etc. But that is much rarer and the above problem is quite a commonly known one. Hope this helped 👍

ALL THINGS JIM thanks very much you have helped me a lot with this headache of a problem now you mention it I did fit comline discs and cheap pads but the pads were a loose fit in the carriers which I assumed was my issue and I replaced the pads last weekend with genuine ford ones. you get what you pay for I suppose
