Front Load vs. Top Load: Which Washer is better?

When you are shopping for a new washer many people have the question which type should I purchase. A top load washer or a front load washer?
Watch our video as we review the top 5 things to consider when purchasing a new washing machine.
1. Which type cleans best?
2. Efficiency - How Energy and Water efficient is your washer. Also which one has quicker wash times. These three metrics all save you money.
3. Cost - Upfront cost. How do they compare?
4. Convenience - how many options do you have to fit your space and needs.
5. Ease to load - which is easiest on your body to load and unload.
1. Which cleans the best? If we only factor in the clean ability then this is a toss up. The top load machine (with an agitator) is not as gentle on clothes so with heavy soiling it tends to remove those stains better because it pulls and stretches your clothing. Does it clean better? I would say yes, BUT it also will wear your clothes out quicker. (Watch our video here about the difference between an agitator and an impeller style top load - • Agitator vs. No Agitat... )
One thing not mentioned in the video is a huge benefit you get from a front load washer. That is the spin cycle tends to be much faster. This does not get your cloths cleaner but it does remove more water from your clothing. This is a huge time saver because it shortens the time your cloths require to dry. (The winner of this category is a toss up : no clear winner)
2. Efficiency - Energy and water conservation is very important. But even more important is which one saves you the most time because time is the most precious thing we have. All new washers are much more efficient than they used to be. Looking at energy usage the top load washer uses less energy. Water usage is better on the front load washer because it does not need to fill up as far. Time savings can be debated. If you look only at the wash cycle then top loads tend to win out because their normal wash cycles are shorter but if you include the wash and dry times then front loads will win. (Front Load Washer Wins)
3. Cost - If you are making a purchase where 100% is dependent on the price of the washer, then you can always find a cheaper top load. Many times they start as low as $399. Entry level front load washers start around $799. There is a trade off with lower price items and like most things you end up getting what you paid for. (Top Load Washer Wins)
4. Convenience - Top Load washers are pretty standard in size and dimensions. The lid is on the top making it impossible to store anything there. Front Load Washers however have additional benefits. Not only can you store and place items on top of the washer and still use it, but a front load washer can also have a dryer placed on top of it making it possible to have both a washer and dryer in tight smaller places. Front load washers also have the option to be placed on a pedestal which provides additional storage. (Front Load Washer Wins)
5. Ease of Loading - When loading clothes into a washer many people complain about either not being able to reach all the way inside to the bottom of a top load washer to pull clothes out or say that they can not bend over to reach inside a front load washer because it hurts their back. Because front load washers have the option of adding a pedestal which lifts the front load washer up and puts the drum at a higher level the front load washer becomes easier to load and unload. ( Front Load Washer Wins)
In conclusion: Looking at the 5 metrics we feel most important, it is clear that most of the time a front load washer would be the better choice. Are there still times when a top load washer would be better? Of course, usually those are when your budget is the most important factor or if your clothes are more heavily soiled than the average person.

@@bradleybyrnes9907 I grew up with top loaders, but switched to a Kenmore/Frigidaire Front Loader in 2003 (still using the same one). Over time you could tell the front loader was a bit easier on clothes, but I think you have to own one to tell the difference. Definitely uses less detergent. I also have access to a Speed Queen Top Loader (classic from 2017) at my parents house, and I like to use it for towels. My front loader can rinse soap out of most things, but towels always seem to be more challenging getting the soap out even when using a small amount of detergent. Interestingly, if the towels are really dirty, the front loader gets them cleaner in one cycle versus the top loader needing more cycles..though I haven't tried doing a "soak" first, that's probably what they needed.

Speed queen top load washers are supposed to be ranked very well because they are well-made. They aren’t the most energy efficient but they do what the old school washers did ...Use more water and clean well. Apparently now they’re made where the way the agitator moves with the drum as it shifts which supposedly helps not being so rough on clothes.

I've used both and front load cleans much better, my clothes are completely clean and smelling fresh and it uses less water, where else when I use top load only 85% of the odours are gone and I get itch if I wear clothes that are washed from top load, means it doesn't clean that well. From what I noticed top load uses water and spinning around to clean the clothes, where else front load uses gravity and spins around the clothes and your clothes are grinded against each other during the spinning of the wash and this leads to much better agitations and cleans clothes much better. So based on which cleans much better, definitely front load to me.

Probably because most of today's top loaders lack an adequate agitator. In our mothers' and grandmothers' day, those top load washers had strong metal components and sturdy agitators that did the job. Modern machines are made with flimsy materials that function poorly and break down. Past top loaders could always handle whatever dirty laundry we would throw in and they'd always come out clean and fresh. Try laundering heavily soiled clothing in a front loader. I guarantee you'll be left with dirty clothes insufficiently washed.

I know we went from a top load to a front load, the Front load cleaned our clothes much better and spun more water out of the clothes making less drying time saving on electricity. We have had our front load for about 8 years now and I replaced the extraction pump last year which was a pretty easy job, it took me all of a half hour once I located it. We were lucky enough to find a brand new previous year old model for half off. Our Previous washer was a 23 year old Maytag given to us by a friend's parents, but it used 65 gallons of water for a complete wash cycle and we are on a Well so we switched to conserve water. We were expecting to pay at least 1200 but fell on a deal for 550 and couldn't pass it up and now we can also wash king size comforters in it instead of bringing them to the laundry mat. What he didn't mention is that what you can fit in a top load washer doubles or sometimes triples with a front load.

Boulevard, don't forget that electricity efficiency of a washer is trivial compared to the electricity used by the dryer evaporating water out of the clothes. The average spin speed of modern front load machines seems to be around 1200 to 1300 RPM, compared to about 650-750 on top loaders. The electricity saved not having to dry the slowly spun, still-wet clothes adds up significantly - potentially several thousand dollars over the life of the machine in a busy household if my napkin math is correct!

Good summary. I’ve had all three types: agitator, front loader, top load impeller. Pros and cons to each type. Agitator - low capacity, hard on clothes, inefficient. Front loader - great, except for the mold and mildew (no matter how much you clean and dry it), and the gasket which eventually wears out from cleaning the dog fur. Impeller - despite urban myth, it really does clean well, but gets unbalanced easily, produces a lot of lint, and doesn’t wring out the rinse water too well. To be honest, I’d return to a front loader in a heartbeat if I could get one with an easy-to-reach lint filter. UPDATE: since some people have gotten their panties in a bunch over my original comments……I sold the top load impeller model (it was only a year old), and bought an LG front loader. Love it. As for mold/mildew, of course I leave the door open (why would anyone think I didn’t??), and also remove the whole detergent/bleach sliding apparatus after the final load (very easy to remove and reinstall). I think I have all bases covered now, unless another commenter sees room for improvement. My only gripe is that my son and daughter in law don’t have a clue how to use this simple machine.
@Odins-Men11
@Odins-Men11 8 ай бұрын
the mold and mildrew can be totally removed with a washer machine cleaner like the active tabs that one in a tub wash/regular hot wash will let your front load washer as brand new. the mold is avoided mostly if when the last wash of the day you take a small towel and dry the door gasket the outside and the folded inside. tiny maintanance task nothing to worry about. plus many new brands like LG add a new type of door gasket that prevents mold grow even that still is recommended to dry it once the washer is done for the day/week etc.

Top loaders with agitator have reasonable capacity if you buy one for large loads. Hated HATED -- my front loader. Never got my wash clean, was less than fresh smelling, and mildew.... Which nobody told me about. And the drain hose was always getting plugged. Granted, the front loaders from Europe are stellar (or so I'm told). Commercial ones are great, but who can afford an $8,000 front loader.... Things have improved, but not enough. Front loaders are almost always digital, and that has its own set of problems. I'll stick with my top loader.

I'm from the UK and it seems a bit alien that people would use a top-loader. My Grandma used to have a twin tub, about 35-40 years ago, but it was considered old fashioned even then. I think one of the main reasons is we tend to have our washers in the kitchen and they fit under the counter.

Europeans just dont like water... everything in Europe uses far less water than everything in America... your toilets are almost bone dry, your washing machines practically air dry things... Americans like WATER... we hear "plunk" in our toilets, instead of European inspection shelves... our washing machines actually USE WATER TO WASH... I lived in Europe for many years... its amazing how much aversion Europeans have for water... I dunno, maybe it dates back to the Middle Ages when nobody in Europe bathed (I think Germans still don't). You can keep your no-water appliances... I'm an American, I like water, i'm going to use a Top Load washer and hear all my clothes go splishity-splash.
@MrScottev
@MrScottev Жыл бұрын
@@wolfshanze5980 I think it has more to do with efficiency, our energy tends to be more expensive so our products are designed to reflect that, plus we tend to have less space in our houses. Our toilets work differently. American toilets have more of a syphoning system where the pipe at the back of the toilet is narrow and it requires a lot of water to get the system working, which is why American toilets get blocked a lot more. European toilets tend to have pipes around double the diameter (less blocking) and use the weight of the flushed water to empty the toilet rather than syphoning. Because of the wash down system of European toilets we also tend to have split flush toilets, where you if you just have a wee you can do a small flush which saves a lot of water. I think people may have bathed about once a week in the middle ages and bath houses were common in many areas, pioneers (and people in the Victorian era) bathed about the same or maybe once every two weeks.

Understandable. However, it would be alien to most Americans to have a washing machine in the kitchen, instead of right next to the dryer, in the laundry room, basement, or garage. Most American kitchens are setup for just a dishwasher, and there is nowhere to put a washing machine and dryer in the kitchen.

@@wolfshanze5980 Everything in Europe is more efficient. Not just washing machines. Americans like big, bulky and noisy things. They lost their taste buds a long time ago. Europeans are, .... how can I put this, more delicate, and smart? Your cars, washing machines, juice packs, hamburgers, houses - you name it. They are bigger. Samsung make an "Add Wash" which has a small trap door in the top of the door for that, don't know if you can get those models, but I've always thought it was a bit of a pointless gimmick. I used to have a machine that you could open the door to fling stuff in you'd forgot, until the water went above the the lip of the door seal, the gentle and medium action wash programmes only filled that high so you could open it anytime. The door locking mechanism was mechanical with the door release button on the control panel and used a cable to pop the door open, it had cable linkages to the pressure sensor and a "pecker" that pressed onto the drum pulley, so it wouldn't open while the water level was too high or the drum was still turning even if there was a power cut. The only way to do that in my current machine is to turn the power off and wait two minutes for the bimetal door catch to cool down and release.

I had tried both washing machines. I like top load much better. Since on top load, you can add more clothes if you forget something even if the wash is already starting. Simply pause and open the lid and throw that extra cloth. You can't do that with front load washing machine because once the wash starts, it locks the door; preventing any unintentional opening. I'm using LG 12kg top load washing machine. Cleans very well even with blankets, duvets and comforters. You can even recycle the detergent if you want. Just wash the whites first(wash only and no rinse and spin), then take it out, load the colored ones in a full washing cyle. Afterwards, you can rinse and spin the whites you had just removed earlier. Detergents are pretty strong and its a waste to just use it once (but dont use it more than twice though).

This is a common complaint with front loaders. Some advice would be to leave the door cracked slightly to allow that water to evaporate and to clean your gasket regularly. My machine is front loading, and the maintenance I do on mine is simple. After I'm done washing clothes each time, I always wipe everything dry, then I'll leave the washer's door wide open. I also run a fan directly aimed at the washer's opening, and this dries up any remaining moisture fairly quickly. I always leave the door open until the next time I use it again. I even put some silicone spray on the rubber seal. This keeps the seal nice and fresh. The seal seals the door to the frame opening better.

@@bobby1970 Yup, front loaders are air tight. Sealing it shut while wet and not in use, is just asking for mold…. I don’t use a fan, but I also wipe it dry with a microfiber cloth, and leave the door open. 🤗 Never had a stinky, dirty, or moldy front loader! I also avoid fabric softener and use a pinch of scent beads instead… fabric softener cakes up and creates more susceptibility to mold growth.

I've used front loader and top loader washer. but before I start comparing which is better I just want to share a little side note. first of all I own see through glass washer and I only did this one time. in my top loader I watch how my clothes being wash and waiting patiently I know it is stupid but that's the only way I can determine weather my clothes is actually getting wash properly. ill be honest I didn't like how is being wash due to the fact that is agitator function. plus I can see through the glass how dark is the water and the soap is not absorbing well and agitator it doesn't move the clothes much it is stay in one place that's is a bummer for top loader. in my front loader I witnessed that my clothes is actually moving around and it is satisfying to watch due to the fact that is a tumble motion and that is what I need. my top loader broke down after 4 years use. now my front loader still remain. next time around I will buying a front loader with a little bigger size. when it comes to comparing between these two regards on how long it last, electric saver, water saver, who's faster. I really don't look at that or think of it. I'm more concern about how my clothes is being wash because I don't want to wear dirty clothes.

Appreciate the info! Sadly, I will never trust LG washing machines again. Back in the day (2005-2006) we bought LG front loaders. Horrible experience! Always smelly, gross, dirt collecting machine, never clean smelling clothes, the maintenance was annoying, leaving the door open was always annoying and inconvenient. My mom and her husband bought the washer and dryer combo and so did my partner and I. Perhaps now in 2021 LG has fixed all of these issues, but because we were constantly changing out parts, cleaning, it, and dealing with the smell and gross smelling clothes, I can never buy an LG front loader again, as my experience was so atrocious. Hence, I am very surprised at these ratings you mentioned. We diligently did the cleaning maintenance and scheduled sanitizing and draining procedures and still nothing improved. Now, in 2021 we just got rid of it! That was after changing parts on it 3 times over the years, as well! We were renting from a family member who still had theirs and we could not get away from it or we would have long ago!

I have white shirts that I use for work and when I use my front loader that I recently purchased the armpits still stink. The only real way to wash anything effectively is by hand. So for my white work shirts I throw them in a home depot bucket and wash away. They smell much better. I don't believe all that hogwash that clothes rub against each other and wash themselves. That is so not true. Yea, the rest of my stuff has to be washed by the washer because I don't have the time. My work shirts are expensive and I want them to last long so I do them by hand. And YES, my colors that are washed by the machine still have a smell. I am certain that if you were to take some of your clothes and wash them by hand they would come out smelling ten times better than washing then with your front loader. Yea, I just got mine last year. It's a Samsung and it's no better than the old front loader I had. Oh well...

Owned both but the front end loader has a tendency to leak at the door gasket which is a weak spot. I just purchased a top loader for that reason tired of the wet floor.

I am an appliance technician, when a washer has to be replaced I recommend the customer replace it with a front loader. Although the gentleman in the video is comparing a Speed Queen top loader versus a GE front loader. I would go with the Speed Queen

Why do you recommend they replace it with a front loader?
@TheDavid111089
@TheDavid111089 2 жыл бұрын
@@DithsHauteSpot The newer top loaders are treated like they are older top loaders. Older top loaders can be over filled and still get the job done. New top loaders are too sophisticated and energy efficient. Energy efficiency kills top loaders to the point it disrupts the controls to the point that repairing is as much as replacing. Front loaders keep door open,be cheap with the soap and don’t overload and under load. Also recommend not washing pet laundry in personal laundry, take to laundromat

Love my front load washer. I did do the hack for water level to make it add more water. It's really good now! Don't do it if your washer is still under warranty, is only good to adjust it manually if you have no warranty to begin with...

It sucks that you would need to hack your washing machine to make it work. The older top load, non HE washers are the only ones that actually clean clothing.

Top loaders suck but this video was done well. Used top loaders for years (yes HE ones as well) and they simply just cant compare to front loaders. Each to their own but I dont even consider top loaders anymore. Good video, well presented.

Front load is better for efficiency and electricity and has many wash options . front load washing machines spin much faster at 1600rmp but top-load normally spin at 1000rmp

It seems slightly more difficult to buy a front loads in the states. In the uk front loaders are king. And not as expensive as yours t starting point. Top loaders are rare

Every test shows front load washers was better due to better agitation
@TeleeFONE
@TeleeFONE Жыл бұрын
True coz during wash spin cycle it uses gravity and this creates friction and agitation and clean the clothes very well vs top load which uses water and spin around to clean the clothes and it doesn't have gravity which produces far less agitation on the clothes which leads to not so clean clothes, at least from my experience.
