@ftbllguy2515 Жыл бұрын
@bd4947 I mean respectfully I disagree...It's a song about a guy slowly becoming more and more obsessed/parasocially attached as he's losing his mind. I was alive when it was released, and I'm not sure you can speak for the entirety of the "culture" at the time. "Stan" debuted at 51 on the top 100 and went on pretty quickly to become a cultural phenomenon. I'm not sure why you think people's interpretation of Stan had such a direct impact on his career either or why certain things wouldn't of happened the way they did. He was far from downhill or becoming irrelevant as two years later he'd release "the eminem show" an album that I'd argue was much more popular than "recovery". Recovery is titled as such because he was literally on recovery for Vicadin and some other stuff, and was 10 years later, its not relevant in my eyes. Regardless the song ends with Eminem saying the guy should be seeking a mental health counselor in a sincere way. Stan is literally a combination of "stalker" + "fan", and if you don't think stalkers, alcoholics, or people with suicidal ideation have a mental health problem idk what to tell you.

I know your dad would love to hear Mockingbird, it's the perfect next step in his discography concerning in terms of the progression in this Slim/Em story. You see the reality of his domestic situation behind the exaggerated accounts, and just how tragic, complicated and in ways beautiful it really is. He truly loves his children in spite of his fractured relationship, and wants them to make it through this messy stage in their early lives to become good people, but Eminem has to be a paternal figure from the sidelines, and the song is in many ways showing his hopes and his grief felt during the first two albums, the tragedy he can't express except through Slim.

Totally different genre but you saying that made me think of Chris Cornell when he did "I Promise It's Not Goodbye" - it's a poem a fan wrote, his daughter had cancer (I think) and he wrote the poem from his daughters perspective of "not saying goodbye, but this is the end for me" kinda. It's such a sad/beautiful song, I highly recommend it. He recorded it as a favor for the dad (and of course didn't include it on an album or anything - as to not make money from it, he did it just to do it for the dad) but you can find it on KZbin

Great reaction guys.. FYI, the song is a sample from Dido's (pronounced 'Died-oh') own song 'Thank You'. The chorus hook of 'Stan' is actually the opening few lines from Thank You. It was a massive hit in its own right, particularly here in the UK where she was huge in the early 2000's. Stan is a great example of how you can take a song and transform it from its original meaning. In Thank You the chorus provides the happy juxtaposition to the depressing nature of the verse lyrics. But take that away and make the depressing part the focus, Eminem then cleverly crafts the story of Stan around it... It is in my opinion one of the greatest uses of sampling in hip-hop history.

Dido also had a couple other releases in the US both before and after Stan, so I think it's unfair to say she rode the coattails of the song. If more boys (and girls) had a dad that took this kind of interest in their child, what a huge difference it would make in their lives.. and that would spread out to others. I love this channel so much. Listening to an analytical description of a song I have listened too for such a long time is so interesting. Music is a great form of art because you can engage with it intellectually and casually, and enjoy it either way. Plus it is easy to consume because you two are so entertaining to watch! watching your dads reaction and your excitement to explain what is going on is such a relatable feeling. Thank you for uploading great videos you guys!

Props to dad for listening and understanding...props to the son for including dad and wanting dad to learn. You guys are awesome. It's funny because age-wise, I'm definitely closer to dad...but generationally, musically, I'm closer to son.

Em's storytelling is up pretty high in the list of rappers that do this. I love that your dad gets to see how impressive the writing in the genre is. With that said, The Coolest and The Cool by Lupe are very important listens.

Dads reaction at the end questioning if Eminem reflects on the “Stan” character is an EXCELLENT segue into the song “The Way I Am”. I think your dad is kind of expecting Eminem to be sympathetic but his reaction when he hears the apathy and self fueled hatred will be gold.

I'm from germany and when this song released I was 10 years old and didnt understand anything and never knew what this song was really about, but still listened to it every now and then. I'm a stan. I was born in st Joseph's hospital in Canada like him but the u.s. same name. We both went to Lincoln schools. . I have a gorgeous daughter. I tried to have the same bday as her n I was 6 days off. I named her Aaliyah. Which is Hailey backwards and adjusted. But also carries the two AA's from my name. Also respect to Aaliyah the singer. I'm from Hamilton Ontario. Steel town. 3 hours away from D Town. My ex Anna slit her wrists n tried to jump off a bridge while pregnant. I never got over that. I visited 19946 Dresden ave with my dad. It was burnt already. I just cried n felt so much emotion. You gotta call me man. I'm you're biggest fan.

I think from here with Eminem you take it to THE WAY I AM, as its from the same era, same album, and it might introduce your dad to the technical brilliance that is Eminem. The flow on that track is all time greatness. It will also depict the way the world perceived Eminem at that time, and how he dealt with the fame and its repercussions, given he was amongst the most well-known people walking the earth at that point in time. That was the peak of his popularity, and despite the fact that he had finally 'made it' far bigger than he could have ever imagined, it wasn't all roses and sunshine. Another great video boys.

This is the first video of yours I've seen, and I just want to say I'm deeply touched by the wholesome nature of the father/son relationship you've exhibited here. My own father passes away within the last year; he was my role model and in many ways my closest friend. This kind of cultural exchange was exactly the kind of thing I had the privilege of experiencing during our time together. I grew up listening to my parents' favourite 20th century music, watching classic SNL, B&W shows and movies, Fry & Laurie, et cetera. In return, I introduced him to many media I resonated with. Watching Avatar: The Last Airbender together was especially momentous (he loved it). When he watched 8Mile, he didn't find the movie itself particularly compelling, but hearing Lose Yourself during the end credits immediately made him a believer in the power of the art form.

Dude, I loved this video and be happy you have a Dad that is willing to sit through that with you and actially listen and connect with you. I tried with my dad on several attempts to appreciate some rap and he just said it wasn't music. He died a year ago, and there's no connecting at this point.

Great reaction! I think all the eminem songs you have reacted to have been quite dark. Something softer like 'Mockingbird' or 'When im gone' showing his real side and his personal story would be a good next step 👍🏼 I think your Dad would enjoy that Kai! Looking forward to more eminem.

Adding to each of the verses, depending on what type of medium is being written or recorded, the soundscapes depicts the action as well. So you get scratching of pen on paper in the first, second and last verse, with the 3rd verse on the handheld audio recorder having a very subtle recording device soundscape . Overall a masterclass in storytelling. I'm a Stan of your son/dad music journey duo
