You know, I really missed the Frost reports. It was so entertaining, inviting and involving when you did them for Experiments in mass appeal and I can honestly say that I probably never was more hyped for a new album than then.

I can smell the capacitors from here.. Please tell me you're not touring with this :D When you lay down in front of it I was immediately reminded of the Compurhythm and "Why the dadadadadadadadada? I don't want dadadadadadadadada!"

You lying down in front of it just brings to mind a certain drum machine video. Hopefully this one doesn’t reek of ciggies when you switch it on 😉

You need to set it to 240v me ol' fruit (flip the right switch to the left). Whilst we're "nominally" on 230V in the UK, it's really 240V. Good luck, and may dog bless all who sail in her!

I remember going to the London importer of the Fairlight CMI around 1983 to look at a series II I think it was, although it might have been a series 1. The demo was arranged by the drummer in my band just so we could take a look at it. He didn't tell me where we were going and it was some big surprise on the day. I think the price tag at the time was something like £30k but it seemed like half a million at the time. I remember the demo room was very swish (can't remember the name of the importers now) and the guy demoing it to us pretty soon worked out that we were really only there to salivate over something we could never afford. I did end up buying an Ensoniq Mirage a few years later which, along with the computer interface and software, was the poor man's Fairlight. I still have that sitting in a cupboard. I think it had about the same sample rate but only a 1.6 second sample time. Who'd have guessed 30 years later you'd have more that that in a kid's toy!? There was a time when you could pick a CMI up for about £3k, but I'm assuming they're now moving into the vintage category so probably worth a few quid more. Not sure how much the Mirage is worth now. Probably not as much as my PolySix or Moog Prodigy that shares the same cupboard. I really must get them out and see if they still work!

An ex friend (Note) was quite an expert to the point that he persisted for years after the sell by date with this kit and/or a fellow horse from this stable. We recorded with a "late" Fairlight version in 2007/8. I know there was still support for this old tech and it's descendants a decade ago. It was revolutionary back in the day.

Wow, didn’t think you buy it Gem. You must have got a great deal for that classic dream machine. When you have it all set up, would love a video on what you use that beast for on a track. Cheers and best times with it!

This is an ancient piece of tech! For a long time my home's voltage was 125v when everyone had 220v. So I know everything about being careful. A few appliances got fried.

I can see that you've got stood off the shaggy rug, but I reckon you might want it a bit higher up. I'm sure it wont take well to sucking in fluff and dust... How long before you've circuit-bent a stylophone interface?

So great to see the old gear like your new-to-you Fairlight, and what looked like a Memorymoog in the background at the beginning. So sorry the display didn't make it, though. A suggestion - in the future when you open up something, have on a grounded anti-static wrist strap, or at least touch something grounded on the gear before proceeding - don't want any static charge you might have built up to hurt your gear! It's not really a problem with analog stuff like an original Minimoog, but the digital gear (especially older stuff that may have CMOS circuitry) can be susceptible. Hope you have a blast with the new toy, Jem!
