AND_PEGGY neither Arab nor Chinese cultures encouraged or even permitted women to wear pants.🙁 Jasmine's outfit was the most shocking of all princesses. Plus she broke cultural norms and married for love instead of the norm of whoever her father chose. One of the main struggles in Mulan was that woman should stay in there place and she was breaking that mold. Both of these princesses are far more shocking and break more cultural norms than Elsa wearing pants. I get that our stereotypical princess does not where pants but there are far better representations of women empowerment. It's not the clothes that makes their stories powerful. ☺ it's their ideas and way of thinking.😊

Okay, the additions to the stage show look great--Elsa's song "Monster" in particular sounds REALLY interesting--but am I the only one who's sick of people acting like "Frozen" is the first Disney film to show a leading lady breaking the "traditional" roles expected of women? It's like they completely forgot about Mulan and Esmeralda.

+Alyssa Workman You're welcome. It's seriously bugging me. Everyone's like, "Anna and Elsa are such good role models! They show any girl can do anything!" . . . Except they were born into royalty and have all the privilege and power that entails. Not every girl does and being born or marrying into nobility shouldn't be so heavily associated with having the power to change yourself or the world around you. Mulan and Esmeralda weren't royal in any sense and yet they did far more in their films than Anna and Elsa ever did. They didn't need aristocratic titles to be compassionate and strong and viewed as such by both audiences and within the worlds of their stories.
@TheaterRaven6 жыл бұрын
+disgusting Sparkle Yeah, I know what you mean. I loved those movies as a kid, but I was the weird girl in school. While all the other little girls were playing house at recess and daydreaming about finding their princes, I was on the jungle gym, pretending it was Notre Dame and that I was having awesome adventures with Quasimodo. :) It sucks that Disney seems to pander to such made-up gender norms, the idea that all girls will like "traditional" Disney princesses who do "traditional" feminine things. And yet when they break those conventions that no one's forcing them to keep (except maybe the almighty dollar), everyone sings their praises--"Disney is being SO brave by creating such modern female icons!" Please. Yes, more diverse female characters are needed in today's storytelling, but the bar shouldn't be set so low that a female character wearing pants or simply not marrying or finding a romantic interest by the end of the tale should be regarded as revolutionary in 2018 (or lead to the assumption that "Well, she's a single woman who's focusing on herself and her role as queen, so clearly she's a lesbian!", but that's a whole other conversation).

I like that Elsa wears pants but I think they are making a way bigger deal about this than is needed. Also, I think the pants costume is designed a little funny. Maybe it's because the only difference from the dress is the lack of skirt.

to be honest, the design of the pant kinda make Elsa look like wearing a pajamas or something.

+Sydney Orton I agree. While I like the idea of Elsa in pants (c'mon, snowy mountain terrain is no place for form-fitting slit dresses, and kitten heels), I think what *doesn't* work for me, is it looks like she's wearing the same cape as her ice dress cape...which bugs me. I admit, I'm not a fan of her ice cape (it's way too long, and where it is attached to hey body, is very impractical -- just check out any Elsa cosplayer -- that cape is a nightmare), so, I really wish they would've made this new cape shorter, when they added pants, instead of a skirt. :-/

Marte Paulsen also aren’t a ton of Disney films like Mulan and Brave about strong willed, capable women? I mean most of the films are about girls who are rebellious and want to live their own lives. I mean Mulan literally defeats an army single handily. In Brave she’s the best archer and is incredibly, well, Brave. How much more empowered can you portray them as? I guess you could give them ice powers. I’m all for female empowerment, I just don’t know why they act like Frozen is more empowering for women then movies like Brave or Mulan.

I'm getting a vibe that they are shitting on the earlier princesses and it's pissing me off. Mulan saved China. Belle saved a Beast. Ariel didn't wait for a Prince, she went for him. Cinderella and Snow White are abuse survivors. Tiana started a successful restaurant during Jim Crow law years, Aurora gave up her happiness to full her "royal duty ", all of them are strong women. Can they shut up ? A woman wearing pants doesn't make her a strong girl. It's her attitude, bravery and courage that does. And loving a man DOES NOT make you weak. Frozen is overrated anyways.

I've seen a few people complaining about how Elsa wearing pants is historically inaccurate as this story takes place in the 1800s. Disney has never been historically accurate, nor have their costumes. In the original, Elsa did not wear bloomers or a petticoat, and I'm sure that sheer sleeves and a slit up to the knee would've been pretty uncool back then, too. These costumes aren't more inaccurate, they're just differently innacurate.

I'll give you the slit up to the knee- however sheer sleeves and a REALLY low bustline was normal going back to the 1500's in most of Europe- in fact people made bets on what woman would pop out of the top of her dress at parties. Also women wetted their undergarments to make them cling more and often wore VERY sheer clothing in the 1700's.

@darkshadowstorm70566 жыл бұрын
La Comadre Jynx Agreed. I think both can be perfectly fine on their own. People always have a fear of being alone. But don't think all feminists are like the ones you see online. Some just don't get the ideal
@IrinNovy6 жыл бұрын
Dark Shadow Storm I think it's not healthy to promote loneliness as something cool. Men and women need each other. People actually want love and family. It is normal and healthy. You don't have to have one if you don't want to but most people do want someone special in their life. And saying that women don't need men - sorry, but it's just not true, no matter how much feminists want it to be.
@sigmadonnie60816 жыл бұрын
Yes! Men and women are both equals and needs to respect one another, we are codependent human beings. Those words like one don’t need another just sounds too arrogant, ignorant and unrealistic to me, how could that be called as feminism? Also as a example of avoid confrontation and escape from responsibility, also being rescued by others, I never really view Elsa or Frozen as one of the models of feminism.
@katiebird53276 жыл бұрын
While I absolutely agree that men and women are equal and equally independent, I don’t think that’s what the actor was trying to get at here. When he says they don’t need men but men need them, I didn’t interpret it as women as a whole but rather Elsa and Ana as individuals. He was alluding to how this story is unique in that the women protagonists aren’t drawn into an unnecessary romance for the sake of it (in particular Elsa). However I can see why the phrase is controversial and he definitely could have worded it a little better

Women don’t need men, but men need women? Excuse me? I’m a female okay. So I may be expected to agree. But I disagree. Both men and women need eachother. This isn’t equality, it’s about power. Both men and women are good and bad at different things. This is a known fact of life. Some may say it’s a stereotype but 1. Stereotypes are based in truth 2. This is a biological fact. Men and Women work like a function to a system. Men are needed for one thing, whereas women are needed for the other.

Erika Nance I'm pretty sure he meant in the context of this story. Hanz needs Anna to gain power and Kristoff needs Anna to be less lonely I guess. That's how I interpreted what he said anyway. personally i think having a contest for who is the most feminist is weird. but frozen was always feminist. feminism is clear and SIMPLE. women are just as capable as men in EVERYTHING. female empowerment doesn’t get much more specific than that. people have GOT to stop complaining that feminism is turning bad. it’s not. if anything is unfair, it’s no longer feminism. plus, men and women coming together doesn’t sully feminism at all. men and women working together as equals actually sounds very feminist. i love frozen because i love women saving themselves not cus men saving anything is bad but because saving yourself is the BEST WAY to empower yourself and find ur independence. that’s something EVERYONE WANTS. ok??? u can be independent or single or independent and taken, it doesn’t matter. love is love

Its just that some women are taking this great concept and turning it into a misandry movement. Trying to become superior to men instead of being equal. Spoiler alert: the feminist twist is that Elsa and Anna wear pants in some scenes. Shocker. While it is new and different from the movie and Disney movies especially for the princesses to be wearing pants, it's silly to act like this is still the time of suffrage and women aren't allowed to wear pants. With that said, long skirts are particularly heinous for travel. I wouldn't call the characters wearing pants "feminist" as much as I would call it more practical. 😁

Oh my god people are so ANNOYING, guess what? The founding fathers were all white but almost the entire cast of Hamilton wasn’t, and I don’t see anyone complaining about that. The guy who plays Kristoff was chosen because he is a good actor, get over it. Also, Frozen is not even set in a specific historical time (plus it’s a fantasy), and even if it was Elsa’s original dress wouldn’t be historically accurate at all, so the fact that she wears pants shouldn’t be that big of a deal. Also, the “women don’t need men but men need them” was something the ACTOR said, not the play producers or whatever, this is just a story with two independent girl protagonists who love each other, it doesn’t make it automatically “sexist towards men”. This is coming from a person who really doesn’t like the movie, but I can still understand what they are going for here.

I don't know about this...Their making such a big deal about Elsa wearing pants...Elsa isn't even the most inspirational princess. What about Mulan? Most of the movie was her wearing pants. But she saved all of CHINA! So why is Elsa getting all the love if she just FROZE her town and then put it back together. I mean come on! Elsa was the reason that everyone was in trouble. Mulan went off because her father was sick and she didn't want him in war. Mulan took his place, and she could have got killed for it. Jasmine also wore pants for all of the movie and was beautiful with doing it. She disobeyed her father and married some one else,even tho he wasn't a prince. Frozen is over rated. It happened in 2014. Why can't they do one of the originals from the 1990's like Hercules? Megera didn't need Hercules to begin with. She sold her soul to save her boyfriend. After her boyfriend ran off with another girl she became independent. And was always independent during the whole movie. Tiana was born into a poor family. Yet she made her dreams come true! So why is Elsa in power all of the sudden? And why make a Disney movie feminist? Ugh. It just makes me upset that us girls think we over power men. We are ALL EQUAL! Yes I'm all up for women getting payed the same amount etc. But I don't spend my whole day worrying about it?! In fact, I just brush it off and go on with my day. This is just upsetting.

Well the good things I want to point out are the set, lighting and some of the costumes. I love the lighting it works really well along with the music. However I think the whole reason why this musical was made was purely for money. I've listened to some of the songs and they are not that spectacular. I don't find monster to be very catchy and it personally doesn't feel right that this is on Broadway. Its just a way to make easy money. This is my personal opinion

Jean MacKey Adam Jacobs, who plays Aladdin, is half white (Russian, Dutch, Polish) and half Filipino. So yeah, it's not "historically accurate". If you're making a fuss about black Kristoff but didn't care about a half-white Aladdin, maybe you should reevaluate what you REALLY have a problem with. The historical accuracy, or his race? Not to mention, 90% of the voice cast for the original Aladdin was white.
@natnatattacks6 жыл бұрын
Jean MacKey Yeah Adam Jacobs, a half-white actor, plays Aladdin in Broadway. I wasn't directing the race question directly at you - obviously I don't know you. I'm just making a broader point about how there was outrage when a black man was cast in a typically white role, but none when a white man was cast in a typically middle eastern role. That's a racial double standard that the public holds.

Pants? Really? Slapping pants on Elsa doesn't make this story more "female empowering". It just looks silly, as if she ran out of the house half-dressed and in bloomers. I love the message of true love through family ties that the original movie portrayals and will, without a doubt, still see this Broadway one day when the hype (and price) calms down, but I feel like they are taking it a bit too far. I get what they are trying to do and appreciate it as a woman, but if anything, removing Elsa from the dress is saying that a female can't be independent and empowering if she is wearing a corset and tight dress. Clothing does not determine anything.

This a horrible message: "Letting go of expectations, being perfect all the time, doing stuff for everybody else, and embracing the mess of life and feeling free" Basically it boils down to the acceptance movement. A better way of thinking about it would be for women to rise above expectations, giving 110%, helping others and not accepting your failings but working on fixing them. If the original message is feminist then feminism has low expectations of women.

This girl that goes to my school, let's call her Hawk (because why not?) is the definition of a b*. I am friends with many male beings, because they are easier to become friends with. One of my closest friends, lets call him Owl, (Once again idk why) is a male being. I am told all the time I have a crush on him because I talk to him a lot. Well, one day Hawk took Owl's phone and began texting me some shit that really pissed me off. So, like, she said "Back of hater he DOES NOT like you wannabe." This really pissed me off, and I finally let my anger out from all these people telling me I like him. I wrote 6 long paragraphs explaining why it's no big deal if girls are friends with guys. The next day, Owl kept making fun of me (As a friendly joke) saying i was a feminist, (which I do not understand what the hell is wrong with feminists?) So I got completely pissed off, raged at him, he apologized, but I wanted to ask you all. Do you think it is feminist if I made those paragraphs explaining *Why girls can be friends with guys* ?
@safiradeloceano67596 жыл бұрын
DebsTheDino If you're trying to argue in terms of gender roles, then I suppose it is feminist, because you're right - there is nothing wrong with girls and guys being friends platonically and there doesn't need to be any romantic involvement unless of course you want there to be. But I still don't see the issue here. Are you mad that your friend was calling you a feminist when he didn't mean it (ie. he was mocking you) or that he was calling you a feminist because of your paragraphs (ie. you don't think your paragraphs are feminist and you didn't want them to be)?

I think what's so iconic about Frozen is the sisterly love and that platonic love is shown to be equally important. Yes, woman are competent and even single in other Disney movies, but Frozen gives a new outlook on love for Disney films. I honestly don't think it's overrated. Not all of the people who love it are saying it's the first Disney film to do it. A lot of us just love it, so it's kind of annoying hearing people constantly going on about how overrated it is. If you want to say some Disney films are underrated I'll agree in a heartbeat, but I don't think Frozen is overrated.
@souseiseki906 жыл бұрын
All of those princess love is not true love. But the same goes for Elsa and Anna. Elsa and Anna are sisters by blood. The fact that they are related make their love seems more like an obligation rather than true love. Like, "I love her because she is my sister"or something like that. I'll say Kai and Gerda's love from the original story is even more unique and rarer and probably stronger than Elsa and Anna. Kai and Gerda are not related but they love each other just as much (platonically). And Gerda dares to go on a dangerous journey to save her friends Kai even though they are not real brother and sister. But then again that just an opinion Now, a lot of people think it is an overrated movie because some fangirl/fanboys keep saying how it is the best-animated movie ever made and that set the expectation of people who haven't watch it very high. But when they watch it, obviously it didn't fulfill their very high expectation and the flaws of the movie become more visible to them. So if you don't want your favorite movie to be called overrated, think about that! Overexposure can ruin the movie.
@roseJ966 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to disagree completely. Being related by blood is not an obligation to love. At all. I choose who my family is. If my blood related family does something horrible then I will not hesitate to drop them. Elsa loves Anna because they went through so much together, and Anna loves Elsa because even without the memories, the love remained. What makes Frozen different is that the true love that saves the day isn't romantic.
@souseiseki906 жыл бұрын
It is though, especially for kids. They have been told, "You have to love your family, brother, sister, mother, father, etc, etc. Because they are your family, brother, sister, mother, etc etc." They don't have a choice because they live together in the same house. They have to love them so they love them back so they can stay in the house comfortably without screaming at each other every hour. People either just refused to acknowledge it or didn't realize about it because society all over the world being raised to love their family no matter what. The same goes for parent and children (especially this). Imagine if your mom suddenly said "I don't love you. Get out of my house." while you are still a kid and cannot fend for herself. Just wait for "Children Protective Service" come and have you being put to jail. "Elsa loves Anna because they went through so much together," Went through so much?? Elsa shut herself from the rest of the world and didn't even talk to her. "GO AWAY ANNA x100". Instead of talking it through with Anna to make her understand, her stupid parents erase her memories. And Elsa didn't even make an effort to communicate with her. Like, try in secret maybe... "What makes Frozen different is that the true love that saves the day isn't romantic." I could say the same about The Little Mermaid. It was Triton's love of letting Ariel find her happiness that brings her to a happy ending. If he didn't transform Ariel back to human, she has to part with Eric. Yet people overlooked that... But then again "True Love" didn't exist. Not in family, friend, or couple.

I don’t like that Kristoff. At all. He’s talented and all... but he’s NOT the character. And yes, I watched the show already (which was a huge production, obviously, but was kinda lame and slow for me), and I don’t like the guy as Kristoff. Never will. Caissie is amazing though. Even with those new songs (that feel out of that universe somehow).

ashar abdallah hah. You’re stupid. I’m not. My grandfather is a black, Cuban man. So... no. Sorry to disappoint you.

"My grandfather is black" doesn't mean you're not racist .

Tabris Fru Lar, I'm all with ya! Except what you said about your grandfather, I'm sure it's true and all about you not being racist, but that isn't the best argument. I have a neighbor that's white yet he's always talking complete trash about white people, and he thinks it's ok just because he's married to a black woman. And I'm like uhhh...you do realize you're white right? Haha! So just because someone is that race doesn't mean they can't be racist towards that race. Anyway, I agree with you but I wouldn't use that argument in the future ;)

I think people sometimes have trouble distinguishing "racial" vs "racist." One is having to do or pertaining to race, the latter being biased towards a race or person of a specific race for being superior or inferior based solely on their race. In this case we don't know that the original poster doesn't like this Kristoff because of his race based off of the original post. That being said, I'm a bit taken aback and don't know that the casting makes sense to me, because this was originally supposed to be adapted from a Hans Christian Anderson fairytale and he's supposed to be NORDIC, and, I'm not sure how many black people were around the area at that time, so it feels a bit... shoehorned in maybe. He may be awesome, but it's just... like having a play for Mulan and her mom being Scottish or something. Or Brave having a musical where her mother's Chinese. It's just... a bit weird. I like it when stories have diversity and show it. But it feels like they're kind of inventing it only because of that, and that makes you mentally step back from it and remember, "Oh, this is a play I'm watching. But, I just saw Wicked last weekend and I was not happy that they didn't make one of the main character's have blue diamond tattoos that were one of the only distinguishing characteristics of him in the book, which displayed his culture. A lot of people, who know that change was made, don't care. I do. Some people don't love it when source material (be it book or movie or whatever) is changed for no apparent reason. If they're changing his backstory as well, it may make more sense, but in this case, it feels random. I may love the guy and his skills, but it's incongruous.

Does Hans actually get a villain song? Like I could care less about everything else, but, I just want to know: DOES HANS HAVE A VILLAIN SONG! He honest to god deserves it.. Just having him sing Love Is An Open Door In The Movie honesty sucks. That’s all I have to say.

Why are they wearing pants! This movie is set in the 1800 i think. Why can't they just go with the original set of time. That's like saying Jesus wore a suit. When in reality that wasnt invented yet.

egricci1 This movie is fantasy partially inspired by Scandinavian culture. Nobody actually believes it's an accurate representation of history, my friend. You draw the line at the pants but if you think Anna's ballgown was the stuff they wore in the 1800s I'd suggest you read up more on period fashion.

egricci1 Well it's flipping the script. Rather than a dress she has pants
@avalasialove6 жыл бұрын
Most likely because it's convenient for the actress. She needs to do a lot more running and moving around and it would be very difficult to do in a dress with a long skirt. The pants make it easier for her to move without having to worry about stepping on the costume or tripping.

There is really nothing empowering about the two female lead characters wearing pants I wear pants all the time I don't see it as empowering at all.

and if ppl are THAT turned off by something being advertised as feminist.... fine just dont watch it.... but ideas that dont grant equal opportunity to others due to the way they were born should never be celebrated. celebrating our differences is the only way we can live in this world. it’s unavoidable that you will meet ppl different from u in life, and unavoidable that they will want the same basic human rights u do without being attacked.
@darkshadowstorm70566 жыл бұрын
Deyhara Well even now they are just in different ways. It's more blatant in other countries. Here it's more about image than anything else. The pants thing is a reference to how historically women always wore dresses. So they changed it.

Luna Delight Well when it comes to performing what you want is experience. I mean can you imagine Hamilton or Heathers done by anything less than professional actors?
@jericawilson14846 жыл бұрын
akobel Lol, talking to feminists is what alerted most of us that feminism is (many times) BS. The wage gap isn't a matter of opinion. It's factually innacurate. It shows that overall women make less, yeah. That's true. But not because companies can get away with it. Women make less because they work safer jobs, take more vacation, have kids, and focus on other interests, while men are more focused on finding a well-paying job. It's just a difference in choice. That's not a societal issue. And it's not a "viewpoint". It's reality. Tbh, I'd be surprised if you have actually tried to help oppressed women in the middle east or other parts of the world. There are always ways.
@darkshadowstorm70566 жыл бұрын
akobel Exactly.
@darkshadowstorm70566 жыл бұрын
Jerica Wilson Not necesarilly. Also not every woman has children. As for women in the Middle East like they said it's difficult to do from here. There women can't even drive themselves Yet you think it would be easy to introduce new ideals. It's not like you get a plane ticket and can introduce that in 1 day. It would take quite some time.

OK Frozen has always been female empowering and about the love between sisters n shit and I'm totally for that, but... come on. Feminism is about equal treatment.
