More than likely this is an old coal tunnel. They are all over Halifax. The horse drawn wagon would go down the street and once in front of the opening to the tunnel (Usually steel doors on the sidewalk), they would open them up and dump the coal in. From there the building operator; there was one in pretty much every building in downtown, would shovel into a cart and bring to the coal fired furnace. They would have to keep the furnace going night and day all winter to keep the building warm. You can see at 1673 Barrington street along the base of the Colwell building the metal eyelets where the chains would be attached to dump the coal into the basements. The same tunnel can be seen in the Colwell building from the furnace to the street.

You would never catch me down there, but they are a very interesting find. In terms of our miltary history, they are no doubt related to easy access to the harborfront area. I do wonder why these two men didn't use a good halogen lamp/flashllight. They could've ventured much further down the tunnels. Great video.

Funny, my Grandfather worked for the city of Halifax parks and grounds for many many years. I have never heard him speak of this, from many stories he has told about the city! Thanks for posting!

I want to rent the tunnel. I was born and raised in Halifax. I've heard all my life about these tunnels, one is supposedly in Point Pleasant Park, I may know where the entrance is, but it's closed in by dirt. I found one tunnel myself near the Via Rail station, it badly needs to be cleared of rocks and dirt. The ones from Citadel hill are obvious, you can see the sealed entrances all up the side of the hill which faces the Harbor. These entrances were open until about 20 years ago or so. As far as I have heard, there are tunnels everywhere.

@jayy17783 do you know more about these park lane tunnels?
@dk65785 ай бұрын
@@secondaccount1416 The tunnels that they refer to at Park Lane were actually at Scotia Square mall. There was one running to the Metro Center and one running form the Metro center to Prince George hotel, they were open and being used up until a couple years ago and were only as old as the mall. There is another one at Park Lane mall, with a locked metal door, which can be found next to the entrance on the corner of Barrington and Duke, you can see the rectangle on Google Earth. I worked in Park Lane and the only thing resembling tunnels there were the service hallways behind the shops on the main floor

So odd how he said the smell was kind of not too bad. When I was a kid I used to love going down in my grandmas farm house dirt floor basement. There was such a nice old earth smell. Was nice in cool in the heat of the summer too.
