When this was filmed, Robert Arkins (Jimmy Rabbitte) was going to be the lead singer of the band in the movie... then they heard Andrew Strong (only 16 at the time). They changed it so Arkins became the group's manager, made Strong the lead singer ("Deco" Cuffe), and the rest is history.

My aunties fella was gonna be cast as Jimmy Rabbit. It came down to the 2 of them but cos me aunties fella hadn't got a rough enough Dublin accent......they chose Robert. True story no bullshit. He was in a rock band & had they hair & all but just couldn't nail the accent otherwise they were gonna chose him. Funny i couldn't picture him playing Jimmys role in anyway. They made the right decision, he's a tosser in anyway haha & yeah it wouldn't have been the same with Deco "the bus conductor" not doing the lead singing

I luckily saw all of the Original acts they cover in the Commitments , so I can Honestly tell you , these guys Nailed it ! I also would recommend to you from Down Under in Aussie , a Album or two from Jimmy Barnes , one time Singer with COLD CHISEL . The CD or Album as we use to call Vinyl Recordings is called SOUL DEEP by Jimmy ...let me see what its sequel was called ??? SOUL DEEPER , how catchy , not ! He just put one out called SOUL SEARCHIN" . His biggest Hit was in 1985 for the Movie GUNG HO ! Written by a member of Journey ,WORKING CLASS MAN was bigger hit then the Flick , which the Wizard really liked , the movie starred Michael Keaton !
