FrSky R9 firmware mess and how to live with it - the answer is FLEX

It is not a rant! I will criticize but I will also give you a solution to the problem! And the problem is FrSky and the mess they created in their R9 radio system portfolio. The amount of different firmware version, incompatible with each other, for R9M and all the R9 receivers, is overwhelming. There is ACCST FCC, ACCST EU, FLEX, ACCESS, and ACCESS FLEX. Way too many! On top of that, not all firmware versions are compatible with all R9M modules and radios! How to live with that mess? The answer is simple: flash everything with FLEX firmware from the beginning of 2019 (20190201) and flash a radio with OpenTX-FLEX variant as well. Result? Everything works just great and there is no need to migrate to ACCESS at all!

I've been in the rc hobby for more than 15 years. Binding the R9M to the R9 receiver was one of the most frustrating things I've had to needlessly go through. I played with firmware versions, openTX firmwares, 3 days straight to no avail. When I flashed Flex suddenly everything worked as intended. Can't believer Frsky STILL haven't addressed the issue, any other company would be crazy to solve such an issue with their product! Wish I'd seen this video sooner haha. Thumbs up for this :D

Wow! Thank you! Just spent 2hrs frustrated that my x7 that came from hobby king with a R9M module wasn’t working with the R9SX I bought from Amazon. It would look like it would bind, get to the second part, where the rx light would go green, then it would go back to rapid red flashing. I flashed the flex firmware on the tx module, then the receiver using the smart port wires connecting the rx to the tx. And now it works. What a frustrating process, not the flashing, but the total lack of proper instructions from Frsky. Tomorrow I get to see how the range is and wether or not I can get telemetry to work. Very cool products, but what a learning curve!

@@albertthorval4674 After downloading the firmware zip file from the FrSky website, you'll find multiple firmware files inside. One of them is the FLEX firmware.

Paweł I have bought another module, this time it is R9MLite Pro and it has ACCESS only. I downloaded the ACCESS Flex firmware 1.1.2 and also put the ACCESS Flex firmware 1.1.2 to the R9MM receiver. The system works, the receiver does bind and connect but I can't set the transmitter module to auto power. Only static powers from 10mW to 1000mW. Do you have any info on that? Could you test it? Thank you

I was ‘ok’ with original EU firmwares, but when i started long range, i needed to update. I have put the last version of opentx, r9m, r9sx, r9mx. All updated to flex. Problem now is I’m unsure of the range. I set the power to 1W and sometimes it stays to 100 mw and does not want to scale up even if signal goes to 34-40%

same problem here! I think it has something to do with the limitation of telemetry send back.. the rx can not send telemetry on a high power back and I think they maybe redused power if telemetry is on in the RX option menu.. not sure.. I think I do the EU firmware version without telemetry and at 500mW and see that happens with the range.. Also.. when you bind the rx (with flex firm) and you choose 868 then maybe you get the power limit of LBT but in open tx menu you can even choose 1W but im not shore if it wil comply

Hi. i was using flex NO OTHER FIRMWARE, with my x-lite pro access firmware, and it was working, did two updates for the r9 m-lite pro module now none of my receivers will bind both r9 slim+ and r9mini older versions flashed with flex, the r9 min ota seems like it binds until you unplug it and re connect battery and the light is red and not bound? any help would be really appreciated, do not like to keep binding r9 minis as the little bind button is a bit fragile to be doing this over and over again.

Completely agree with you. R9 system works perfectly with the early 2019 flex firmware. I’m just keeping all my planes on that for the next few years!!

Alan Paul same here but just out of interest, which ones do you use? I use Flex 190117 on the TX in adaptive power mode and Flex 190201 Fport on the receiver and although I get strange rssi values (always between 40 and 70) I've never had a failsafe.

prudensky well that's going to be difficult since there has never been matching flex firmware for the r9m module and r9mm receiver if you believe their release numbers. If you don't believe me go to the FRSky website and look at the flex firmware releases for the r9m module and r9mm receiver on separate tabs, maybe it's just a typo but on the r9m the 13th Feb 2019 release is listed as version 190117, on the r9mm firmware page, same date the receiver version is 190201. The only matching versions are the 181228 firmwares released in 2018, but they are buggy and telemetry doesn't work. If I have that wrong, then please explain where I've gone wrong?

The only point for me the RSSI, is very slow and not very readable usable. There is a 2+ seconds lag, so when flying around a concrete building my RSSI becomes bad after I have passed that building. Also the RSSI scale in my betaflight OSD using Fport is a bit of strange. Start at 99drops fast to around 68-69 then decreases. In comparison with my flysky system RSSI out behaves very linear as a percentage with the range, giving a good indication. from 99-0. What about the latency for Flex, is it using pxx2 and have the fastest response minimal jitters?

I have all my Pre 2019 / Pre ACCESS R9 on 181228 FCC. I'm kind of scared to change since it's all working just fine. Flex 190201 for FCC too?

Flex is not FCC certified, even on 915mhz. If you have no issues, don't switch to flex. The main benefit was for EU 868mhz users who wouldn't get high power levels with telemetry without flex firmware. You 915mhz guys have always had all telemetry and power options.

I’m the same running the latest version of FCC on my pre 2019 R9 module and R9MM and R9 mini receivers with no problems so at this stage I’m not switching. I do have an R9 slim receiver that I was going to use in a long range fixed wing and I don’t know if that works well without FLEX but as James mentioned it seemed to be the EU guys which were having problems with telemetry etc. so hopefully I won’t have to switch everything over to FLEX down the track.

Hello, I have the R9M 2019 module, and I am a bit confused on the ACCESS compatibility. I flashed it with ACCESS firmware and I flashed the R9 MM also with ACCESS, but i could not bind the receiver to the module. I have the standard X10S Horus TX. I was able to ge them to bind only when I flashed them with the standard ACCST firmware. So I guess ACCESS Compatibility has to do also with the TX. Thanks for clarifying.

@@WeMakeLaw I was infuriated about CRSF because my receivers would not bind to the transmitter. I did everything right, I suspected. Powered the receiver on with bind button pressed. Who would expect the receiver to be in auto-bind for convinience when it's powered up for the first time ?! ;)

Hi Pawel... good day! I already have one R9MM-OTA (flashed ACCST by the seller) working fine with a R9M module marked ACCESS, plugged on Jumper Tx18. I mainly fly motogliders and planes, no using flight controller for now, even after more than 60 years (retired electronician)! Very crazy config but necessary... after Frsky are selling Access and give no help on existing ACCST systems! I need your help for flashing a new R9-SX (ACCESS) to this Tx. I am not sure to have read the right procedures, there are so many words on the subject! I also have a Frsky QX7 2.3.11 and I plan using its S-port for flashing the 2 frk files (Flex and Fcc) you are saying Ok for R9MM and others... with firmwares R9M: FW-R9MM-ACCST_v20190201. I am not sure to understand the process explained here. What do you recommend as flashing sequence: Flex first, then FCC ? Any other things to do for succeeding ? Flex will be the good key for this R9-SX? Thanks...

Paweł, good video, I have 2 comments: 1) true FLEX is the way to go! 2) To go with Accst only for R9 - this is not true for R9 users with XLite that would like to use stronger transmiter other than 100mW. If Sb wants to go for 100mW < then one needs to use R9M pro Lite and then you have no choice to use ACCESS

Hey Pawel, now that Flex has been removed from Frsky's website, what now? I've got a Taranis X9D SE pre 2019 and I have tried researching which recievers I can use now with the R9 2019. Confused about it all. Think it would be possible for you to make a new current video on what receivers we could buy that would work with set ups such as what I have as I know I will need to be buying receivers soon. I send an email to frsky tech support they responded me that firmware can be flashed on module but you have to buy ACCST receivers, Is that the case or i can also change the firmware on any r9 mini receivers..... Thanks for solving this mess 👍

After many 6-9 months of poor R9 reception & failsafes, telemetry lost... I found an FCC version that was rock solid. I am so gun shy of R9 firmware that even if you are right about flex, I am unwilling to take the chance.

Thanks Pavel. I jumped right into R9 since it’s cheaper and more available (right now) than TBS. I have all pre-2019 FrSky gear and my R9 was ACCESS. After listening to you and a few others, I downgraded all the R9 components to ACCST and it works! I hear all the hate for FrSky, but at *least* they kept the ability to re-flash the R9 hardware with ACCST to retain compatibility with the older systems.

I gave up on FrSky R9 system and traded it in, on the TBS UHF exchange program. I still have a lot of respect for FrSky 2.4ghz accst. It's what made mini quads, as we know them today, possible. I won't be updating to access. If I need a faster link with better range, that's where my xfire steps in.

I see that FrSky has both versions available for download but after reading through these comments it seems as if you CAN NOT downgrade ?? Looks like the Non OTA RX's are getting scarce and I would not want to invest in this line if I could not use it with my ACCST gear.

Thank you for another great video Pawel, as a R9 user who is looking at the viability of the system long term I really appreciate your opinion. The R9 system (and the rest of FrSky at the moment) is a real mess! I'm in the process of trying to figure out whether or not it is worth future proofing and upgrading to the R9M 2019 version. I believe HorusRC are still offering discounts for existing R9M owners. You mentioned to try and stay away from the OTA versions of the receivers.... I have a feeling FrSky will be phasing these out soon. The non-OTA version of the R9MM is marked as discontinued on HorusRC and is now sold out on Banggood with no restocking date.

I started with the FLEX FW and never even bothered with the other ones. Flex is the only FW that works with F.Port correctly. Never had any of the issues that others have complained about.

Well, crossfire just works without nonsenses as inverted ports and need for 2 uarts apart from that receivers are not that much more expensive.

My god I swear if I see another 'just go Crossfire' comment I may go insane. The Crossfire proposition IS expensive if you are already invested in FrSky R9. The point of this video is that R9 works just fine if you use the correct firmwares. There is absolutely no need for anyone to 'go Crossfire' and empty their wallets into Trappy's bank account like you did.

Slightly pointless comment here, but I agree with everything you've said in this video, and it's exactly the same conclusion I came to. I have an original Horus X10S and as I understand it I cannot run the R9M 2019 module with ACCESS even if I wanted to because the module bay won't support the digital module protocol used in ACCESS. Even the ACCESS upgrade kit for X10S will not upgrade the module bay component so it is useless and I'm not prepared to splurge on the X10Express just to use ACCESS.

The scope of the situation is simple and unchanged on the whole for years. This makes a rational mind suspicious of what this "Access" is actually for. I don't have to like what the FCC does but they are still somewhat accountable for what they do. THAT COUNTRY is not accountable to anyone - they can't even bring themselves to the point of spelling out the word "free". Ignoring FCC framework and other standards is indicative of the issue and has been a nasty habit of this mindset across all industry. The developers clearly are following another set of rules for their conduct and mindset. Net result is what we have that is now blatantly obvious. It doesn't work right even fresh out of the box. For me, I will stay with objective function and defeat subjective options. If I can't do that, it gets hammer therapy and instant retirement. Lesson learned.

I am still on the LBT Firmware the R9 came with, and downgrade all new Receivers. Had no Issues so far...never touch a running System 😉

Not only on eBay, at BG too. Just after the Access stuff appeared, I ordered some Frsky R9 MM 4/16CH ACCESS for flashing with Flex and now they seem to be disappeared ,only OTA stuff there. Another downside was not to get at least the FCC900 version antenna (which work even at 868 Mhz) butthe blue Australia 915 version. Frsky is no longer on my top list.

If it comes with Access on it ,and it most likely will . It cannot be downgraded. Frsky's way of forcing people to upgrade radios and firmware on receivers. Buyer beware. :)

My next lr system is crossfire for sure, frsky really fucked this one up, I feel bad for buying it. Yeah it's expensive, but I started to value my time more than money for certain things.

Andrew Higginson It is. Plus binding without touchig receiver, passing control of model to another radio and few more. ACCESS flex fw works on xm+, r-xsr and r9mm, r9m2019 module with no issues. It’s the law that says if u want to sell in US it must be fcc compliant and in EU LBT compliant . Manufacturer or distributor cant sell radio legally without proper radio fw. So FrSky developed flex fw that won’t ever be installed on sold radios or RXs because allows to set “illegal” frequencies or power. User can do it taking full responsibility. What is so complicated about that? I’ve got x9d2019 and x-lite pro with r9 access modules. Plus multi module for both of them if I really need to bind in d8 or anything else There is old saying “you get what you pay for”. You got free advice.
