Her diction, my dear is SUPERIOR to that of 95% of English-speaking Americans! I understood every word she uttered in song! I was born in Croydon, England where, according to history, the English language was originated. Considering that she was born in South Korea where the enunciation of words with certain letters in English stand the pronunciation only through a MIRACLE, she deserves an A+ for DICTION!

I misread that as the English language originated in Croydon. As a South Londoner we both know that isn't true :)

This song was a huge hit in Victorian times (thanks to sales of sheet music, before the age of recordings, if you can imagine that!) and is one of the rare songs from that era that still holds up today. Sumi Jo's interpretation is simply lovely; it doesn't matter if she's Celtic or not, the important thing is the feeling and the voice.

This an excellent version by a stunning singer. As a "Celtic" man myself, I wouldnt even bother listening to Enya's version. She has virtually a nil profile here in Ireland and, whilst talented, caters for what I would consider a tourist audience.

Oh! dear another Sunday morning spent sighing over Sumi Jo. Definitely the best rendition of this truly wonderful sung that I have ever heard. Sumi Jo has performed it many times but this is the one that entrances me. I have only heard her sing Mozart live and that was one of the very best evenings of my life. Having lived life to the full for 54 years that is not lightly said.

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls With vassals and serfs at my side And of all who assembled within those walls That I was the hope and the pride I had riches all too great to count And a high ancestral name But I also dreamt which pleased me most That you loved me still the same That you loved me You loved me still the same That you loved me You loved me still the same I dreamt that suitors sought my hand That knights upon bended knee And with vows no maidens heart could withstand They pledged their faith to me And I dreamt that one of that noble host Came forth my hand to claim But I also dreamt which charmed me most That you loved me still the same That you loved me You loved me still the same That you loved me You loved me still the same

I love this song, and I'm glad artistically she struck a medium between pop and opera. What gets me about this one is that genre-wise it is not firmly anything really. Even though it was part of an opera it really can be taken as a number of things depending on the stylistic preferences of the artists.

@kamikazekate What's wrong with it? It's a beautiful song and a beautiful voice well modulated for the venue. They gave her a microphone so she doesn't have to project across a crowded theater over a full ensemble of actors. And it's a gentle ballad, so a gentle delivery is more suited than a full bellow you might want to use for a march or a drinking song. I thought the delivery was perfect for the composition. And popular style? Oh, if only the current pop singers could sound like this...

@rmcinuk Well said rmcinuk. Jo Sumi is an under estimated and under appreciated talent in a business that glorifies mediocrity and showmanship. Her star has steadily risen over the last 25 years to cast her into the forefront of coloratura soprano's, holding her own on stage and on recording with her far more promoted male counterparts. She is a gift that most do not deserve.
@Agorante
@Agorante 13 жыл бұрын
@LordoftheTrapdoors Sumi Jo regularly sings the Queen of the Night. Sutherland recorded the arias but the role was never in the center of her repertoire. Too high. Popoplo di Tessaglia goes higher yet (High G). This aria has been recorded by Dessay and Gruberova. Pierette Alarie also recorded it. I knew Alarie slightly - she was tiny as such super high singers usually are. Sutherland was big. She searched for a "tall tenor". She discovered this guy called Pavarotti.

She is very good. An incredibly versatile singer. Ironically, my favorite versions of this area comes from two non operatic singers. Sissel and Enya. This version will run a close contest though.

I must disagree with Sakuems. There are several good versions of this song on youtube including the dreamy Enya`s. Sutherland is just too high opera, but Anne Buckley`s is far from ethereal to my ears (compared to Enya or Sissel). Ms Buckley`s allows her sentences to drift away towards the end with awful delivery as if she is drunk or stoned. Sumi Jo is capable of giving this song more operatic style but here, I think, she delivers a nice mid-range version between opera and pop, while her clear delivery means you can understand every word. We can all agree I hope that it is a most beautiful song, one of the most romantic of its kind ever written.

Agree with Mr. Right. This is a beautiful non operatic version of the song. Particularly I found Ms. Sutherland's too operatic too-although I love opera. I prefer Elina Garanca's version when selecting an operatic one, marvelously delivered. I respect other's tastes but find Enya's version poor when compared with Sumi Jo's and Garanca's.

First, The Bohemian Girl is an opera composed by Michael William Balfe with a libretto by Alfred Bunn. Second, if she were, so what?
@kamikazekate

@MrDavethebrave09 You misunderstand me Dave. She is an operatic singer who i really enjoy. I really do like her. This does not suit her voice.(but at the same time it should!) But she let herself down here thats all. This is a fantastic aria written by Mr. Balfe. If you really want to hear what it should sound like, listen to Joan Sutherland or Jesse Norman who in my opinion sing it beautifully.

Beautiful performance. I think her rendition is more expressive e refined than Dame Joan's (of course, Sutherland voice was another matter!) Just I think this version is lower than the original, but honestly sounds much better in this way.

Compare this with Dame Sutherland's version. In this version the Bohemian girl is a middle aged woman. In Semi's version the Bohemian girl is an 18 yr old who used to live in style and now stays with her grandparents in a rural cottage.

It is Sutherland who delivers the bench mark for this aria and it is an Opera aria indeed. She often sang this at the end of concerts. Lovely Sumi Jo is to light for this this.

David Smith. Everyone has their favorite I know. But,for me, the definitive version of this song has got to be that of Jessye Norman. Dame Sutherland's standing is such as to be almost beyond reproach but in this particular instance I believe Ms Norman's rendition is arguably the better version. But..each to their own.

@Agorante
@Agorante 13 жыл бұрын
@LordoftheTrapdoors You imply that Miss Jo can't sing as high as Dame Joan could. I don't believe that this is true. Sutherland had a huge easy voice with super flexibility. I heard her live many times. In my life time there was never anyone else quite like her. I had heard several famous Normas live before I first heard Sutherland sing it. Wow! Sumi Jo live has a much more normal sized voice for this fach - rather small. OTOH her voice is probably a whole tone higher.

@Agorante I don't think Jo can't sing high as Sutherland (and however this aria is lower then top higher range of two both). I'm not sure but I think this version is half tone lower than original Balfe partiture (I think it's a stylistic choice, certainly not because she can't sing higher). About Joan; I never heard her live (and I heard Sumi Jo only once) so I can't compare them.

Actually, she does sound as if she were singing pop. I am not sure that this is stylistically appropriate in music written under the influence of Donizetti. Her performance is enjoyable none the less, but it is more crossover than opera.

No way, Elina Garanca is not etheral, it's opera and overshows her vibrato. Anne Buckley version is etheral.

Sakuems I agree that Anne Buckley creates an ethereal atmosphere, it is great but can't more than one artist be ethereal? Elina Garanca is always ethereal IMO as are others including Anne Buckley. Just as there are many varieties of beautiful flowers there are many varieties of these angelic singers, two of which are Anne Buckley and Elina Garanca. Go to Elina's YT video of the opera ball 2010 where she sings the aria from Samson and Delilah. Definitely ethereal.
