The beauty and the substance is not only in the song being sung but also in the human contrasts created where the woman is mature enough to create the right emotions for the loving occasion while Oliver Hardy is slightly conscious and aware of the condition and situation while Stan Laurel is completely oblivious to what is going on in a woman's heart and proceed to eat and gnaws away at his food with the mentality of a child wondering what all that softy singing stuff is all about as he cannot get in to an equivalent mind and body space, to appreciate the issue in hand. Thank you Mr. Zeleznik! L and H often managed to sneak in a few tunes to their wonderful films, but I've always loved this one the best!

Thank you for posting this. Rosina Lawrence had a fairly short career in Hollywood but I find it odd that with her beautiful voice she only has 6 soundtrack credits.

+keith2366 Thank you keith2366, I'd heard of her over the years, but was surprised to learn that her lovely voice was in this clip! It's not easy find her other contributions, but I continue looking. With the sweetest voice, and very lovely appearance, somebody in "Hollywood" should be ashamed that she wasn't offered more. Always liked the actress "singing" her voice, but she kept changing her name over the years! Hard to keep up with her. She made quite an impression when she starred with Karloff/Lugosi in "The Black Cat," one of my favorites! Thank you keith2366 and keep in touch. varadero

+varadero1839 simply the best version by Rosina Lawrence, fell in love first time I heard it, beautifully feminine, graceful, perfect, and I have listened, versions from great opera singers none of them comes even close. Well! the scene helps of course

One of her most accessible performances is in Pick A Star (1937) starring herself and Jack Haley. It's about a singer "discovered" in a talent contest. A later re-release is called Movie Struck, but it's the same picture.

@roadsweeper69 What a tribute! I'm really glad to hear from you! Some folks couch their comments in "double-speak." Sometimes, I'm guilty of the same thing. It's refreshing to hear someone just say their piece, no holds barred. I'm honored to hear from you, and thanks so much!

Yes, "plain truth" is a treasure and a harshness, necessary and dangerous, liberating and painful. One of the human quandries we must navigate!

I grew up on a diet of Stan and Babe. They have always made my life a happy place. If i'm ever down, i stick on some Laurel and Hardy. It never fails.

I was watching my Saturday morning Laurel and Hardy when this song came on, I was pleasantly surprised. The actress (Thelma Todd) who played the gypsy's queen's daughter died 'mysteriously' and the movie had to have major rewrites, and re-filming of entire scenes to work around it; the studio didn't want to be associated with the controversy.

Hi Liz Doyle, So happy you and Pat have written, especially since you've enjoyed this so much! I'm the poster, and I 1st saw this as a child; obviously, it never left me. It can be dismantled by vocal "experts" forever, but the lovely voice of Rosina Lawrence, the beauty of Jacqueline Wells and charm of L and H make this a classic! I love it, and glad you both do also! Best to you, varadero

No need to dismantle anything as Rosina Lawrence's lovely singing goes straight to the heart of this aria . Her light soprano voice has beautiful tone and fine technique. Jacqueline Wells makes the clip delightful , along with Laurel and Hardy..

@megapaulsimon fear we're in the same boat! I melt when I hear the song and the "singer," but seconds later could swallow my tongue laughing at Stanny! So happy to hear from you, and grateful that you enjoyed!

I agree with you about Dame S's slightly overwrought work with this song. And I loved this recording from the film, completely new to me. This song always makes me weep, but especially after the death of my brother who loved it so much.

@PuddleMoon I've always loved these guys, but I think your observation is just right! Great silly scenes, but heartfelt and charming at the same time. Thanks so much for your comment!

I would like to hear this in a digital remastered version. So this old version still has a lot of charme.
