Jacqueline Wells is so endearing here, but her lovely voice is dubbed by *Rosina Lawrence. Michael William Balfe, composer, would probably not have enjoyed what happened to his opera, but one never knows! Either way, it's one of the more entertaining scenes; Ms. Wells is trilling about her exotic dream, "father" Oliver is blubbering, and "Uncle" Stan is just stuffing his face with all the breakfast on the table!
* The young woman who dubbed for Jacqueline Wells was Rosina Lawrence, a favorite of L&H.

The beauty and the substance is not only in the song being sung but also in the human contrasts created where the woman is mature enough to create the right emotions for the loving occasion while Oliver Hardy is slightly conscious and aware of the condition and situation while Stan Laurel is completely oblivious to what is going on in a woman's heart and proceed to eat and gnaws away at his food with the mentality of a child wondering what all that softy singing stuff is all about as he cannot get in to an equivalent mind and body space, to appreciate the issue in hand. I was haunted by this song for many years Count John McCormack did a version all old, crackley & squeaky, but he brought it from Ireland to America in the 20s. A very famous song here in Dublin in my grandmothers time. But Ms Lawrence sung it perfectly (not forced), has to be sad and wistful. Nice one.

I think there exists a kind of Heaven for this type of song. In their heyday, these songs were considered as future classics! Time had other plans for them, and they sort of melted away. Whoever produced this L and H movie recognized a beauty when he heard it! He did everything right; great cast, beautiful orchestration, fine actress and dubbing singer. What's not to like? Hi Christopher Hardy, I posted this, and she really was lovely and very talented. I also remember her in "The Black Cat," with Karloff and Lugosi and later in "Rhapsody in Blue." Several years ago I visited Mendocino, here in Northern California. According to what I've read this is where she passed away at 87! This gem of a town has been used as a backdrop for numerous Hollywood/TV films, among them "Johnny Belinda," and "East of Eden," to name a couple! It is never my intent to anger anyone, or insult any singers, I just try to give honest comments that are my opinions based on over 50 yrs of watching and listening to opera. I have said before that I respect Joan Sutherland as a kind, lovely woman, someone I could have been friends with and enjoyed a good cup of tea with but unfortunately, I consider her probably the most over rated singer in history. Spectacular high notes, yes. A voice that lasted, yes. But a robotic stage presence, extreme sloppy diction in all languages, just plain boring. This lovely aria captivated me from the first time I saw Bohemian Girl. I was not aware until just now that, while I fell in love with Jacqueline Wells' enchanting theatrics, it was, in fact, Rosina Lawrence's delicately evocative voice that sent tears coursing to my eyes. Not a problem from my standpoint. Indeed, I praise the intelligence that brought these two lovely young women, with their respective strengths, into collaboration for the blessing of subsequent generations. Hi Mr. Williford, As the poster, I'm so glad to hear from you! Before I saw her in this wonder, I'd seen her in another film. She had a lovely distinctive face, but had short brown hair, and it was a serious horror/melodrama! That film was "The Black Cat," starring the 2 fiends of the day, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi! When I saw her in "The Bohemian Girl" I was confused because I knew her, but the blonde hair threw me. She performed in many films until 1957. Kinda wish she'd kept her Jacqueline Wells name, but she changed it in 1945 to Julie Bishop. I also read where she passed away in my favorite town, Mendocino, California! I spent 8 days there once, and it's an unforgettable place! Thanks so much for writing, varadero

I was watching my Saturday morning Laurel and Hardy when this song came on, I was pleasantly surprised. The actress (Thelma Todd) who played the gypsy's queen's daughter died 'mysteriously' and the movie had to have major rewrites, and re-filming of entire scenes to work around it; the studio didn't want to be associated with the controversy.

It's beyond me that Ms Lawrence never recorded much else. What a tragedy, what a loss. It doesn't make any sense, how is it that such a rare talent was lost to us, rather than to be there for posterity, what a loss. I would really like to know how this is possible.

TY so much for this upload, my favorite comedy duo & so good to hear this enchanting song again sung so beautifully, brings tears to my eyes every time. I used to think Dame Joan Sutherland's version was the seminal interpretation, however I'm happy to genuflect to this magnificent rendition. Enya's version is also haunting. :-)

Thank You! I, too, like the renditions by both Dame Joan, and Enya! Call it nostalgia, or what you will, but I 1st saw this when I was about 9-10 years old. If I'd known how, I'd have tried to discover the name of the singer much earlier. Lovely Rosina Lawrence sings here! My "library" was in the basement of our tiny-town firehouse! I kind of blame Hollywood for never having decided on an actual name for "Jacqueline Wells." Think the powers that were couldn't figure out what to name her! I had a really hard time too. She was really pretty, but here are at least 3 of her stage-names: Jacqueline Wells, Diane Duval, and Julie Bishop! She played Mrs. Ira Gershwin as Julie Bishop! Yes, Rosina Lawrence. If you wonder why they kept jumping back to Stan or Ollie in the song, it was so they had some places to edit so that Jacqueline Wells could do the lip-syncing in pieces and not all in one shot, and then they could choose the best takes.
