Yes I’ve cooked on a wood stove. The old cast iron with the tall top, when I was first married. Used as a heat source too. Made some delicious food on it.

Jocasta Innes wrote a book in the 60s called the paupers cookbook. This recipes , but made with a cheese bechemal , featured in the first edition. I used to make it when I was first married and you could buy a pound of bacon scraps for 50p from the butcher. It is delicious. Thanks for the memory.

I grew up with wood stoves, and learned to cook at about eight yrs old on the lovely big cookstove in our kitchen. After marriage when we bought our elderly house we found a cook stove, named her Betsy and she performed well. Not used as much now( she has voracious appetite), and I can cook on top of a smaller more energy efficient wood stove in our keeping roon. Also enjoy open hearth cooking. Have made an insulated box (haybox) to try soon as well. Thank you Jane and Michael for all you share. Looking forward to making the casserole soon; not too wintery here yet, but it is definitely on the way. from, Susan in New England

I had a solid fuel Aga in a big kitchen. We burnt mainly wood. At first it was a challenge learning a different way of cooking but once I mastered that I loved it. Always warm in the kitchen always a kettle ready boiled. I also loved that I had four ovens all at slightly different temperatures so I could cook more than one thing at once. I also believe the food tastes different(better). Will try this dish in the run up to Christmas as it looks yummy.

Wonderful Ideas. T.Y. My Version: 6 Russet Potatoes, 1 Sweet Onion, (sliced thin). Layered in Crockpot. On top of each layer add 2 TBLSP. all purpose flour, 2 TBLSP. Unsalted Butter. Pour Milk in until all the ingredients are covered. Cook on high 2 hours, while stirring frequently. Add any cheese in when its almost done. Sprinkle cut up bacon and green onions on top of each serving. I substitute 1 can of cream of mushroom or celery soup, 1 can of water, or 1/2 can canned milk. instead of milk. I add 25% water, to every 3/4 gallon of milk. We used 2 big chunks of coal in our wood burner.

Can I substitute sour cream for the crème fraiche? I have a small wood stove for heating my house and I do occasionally cook on it although it doesn’t have the proper space on top to hold a larger pot or pan. The top isn’t flat, it has a curve that drops down over part of the firebox so it can be a challenge to cook on it. I think I might try placing a could of fire bricks on the top of the stove to see it it will even the slope out enough to put a larger stockpot on it this winter. I would love to have a wood cook stove but sadly I don’t have room in my home for one. I have a similar type fan for moving the heat that the stove produces. Thanks for another great video and recipe! Happy holidays Jane and Michael 🎄
