In more humid climates I’ve found the pasta needs long term storage measures to stay fresh and edible for years.

We’ve been storing our flour with the brown paper bags and then food saving them. We freeze it before we vacuum seal it.
@ogarcia777
@ogarcia777 Жыл бұрын
Why do you freeze it?
@nzulu11
@nzulu11 Жыл бұрын
@ogarcia777 it kills any little critters that might be in it, they can't survive such low Temps.
@BillA-pj4ze
@BillA-pj4ze 10 ай бұрын
If you put the product in a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber, the critters will die anyway. just make sure you remove as much air as p[ossible before sealing the bag. It would help to sift the flour like they did in the old days to remove any critters and larvae. The best way is to combine what was done in the old days and then add the additional modern technologies (mylar bags freezing, oxygen absorbers ...) on top of it.

Did you know you can stick a taper candle into the giant containers of crisco (like club size) and you’d have an emergency light and heat source that lasts a super long time? A good item to stock up on since it’s multipurpose.

They work. Just take it out of any plastic container, since plastic is flammable (#10 cans are great to use). Don't leave unattended.

The best way to reabsorb the separated sugar crystals from the honey is in a hot water bath. The only issue is that if it's in a plastic container, chemicals leech out of the plastic into the honey. You should never use the microwave with plastic containers. The best solution is to put the honey in a glass container. Then you can microwave. Otherwise you may need to cut the plastic container open to remove the honey before heating.

For flour, put the bag in your deep freeze (we have a chest freezer) for a week. It kills any bug eggs that might be in there. Then store as you would before, but now, bug free.
@BillA-pj4ze
@BillA-pj4ze 10 ай бұрын
Be careful with moisture. You should leave your bag of flour out in a low humidity room for another week before putting it in either a Ziplock bag, vacuum seal bag, or mylar bag. Ther freezer pulls moisture from the product but as soon as you remove it from the freezer moisture gets pulled in and the difference in temperature can cause condensation from the ambient air.

Dry beans get hard after 3-5 years. They will not soften up when cooked. I had to throw out a huge bucket of them. I plan to put them in quart jars with oxygen absorbers next time and see how that works.

You can use them just like you would use the ingredients when they are fresh. All you need to do is rehydrate the vegetables first. If you're making something really liquidy like a soup, you don't even need to rehydrate first, they'll rehydrate in the soup.
