Hello Jane 👋 from 2007 to when my children moved out to get married, we lived very frugally because I was a single mom. Anything that came up, we tried to make it ourselves, thrift etc. Just the other day my young son and I were talking about those years. We both realized we wouldn’t change anything. It taught us all so many skills that are essential to living a ‘good’ life. Others looked at us and thought we were lacking everything. Nope, we were happy, safe, well fed, clean and had everything we needed. Even though it was a difficult time, it was also a massive blessing. Thank you for the encouraging words today. I go out to eat twice a year. I take my daughter out for her birthday and she takes me out for mine. We go to a local steakhouse that has exceptional service and high quality food. We have done this for 30 years now and it makes it very special. I have friends who tease me often about my "cheap" spending habits and I just smile because I know that every month my bills are paid, my pantry is stocked and my goals are met. It brings me peace.

I like being frugal. I have 7 months of grocery sinking funds, 2 months hydro (electricity) paid in advance, 9 months of emergency living expenses plus 3 months of buffer money, a healthy retirement fund and a nice investment portfolio. 97 % of my furniture is second hand, gifted or thrifted. I am debt free. I have been able to do this on a lower fixed income (disability). This year, I will reach my biggest financial goal ever, if all goes well, by June. Just this past weekend someone laughed at me when I said I budget only $100 a year for restaurants..I just grinned back. Great video!

I think a lot of people don't understand the difference between being frugal and being poor. To me, being frugal is voluntary, and gives you room to maneuver financially. Being poor is not voluntary, and can sometimes make it very difficult to even manage everyday life. I've been poor. I much prefer being frugal, so I hopefully don't ever have to be poor again. It's strange to me that being frugal is often looked down on, while drowning in debt is seen as normal. I agree that we need to normalise and celebrate frugal living.

The frugality I would like to see is appreciation of and use of inherited and second hand furniture. So many young..and not so young..people demand everything brand new presumably creating debt....and waste. Reuse- and celebrate that three generations of your family have used this dressing table before you.

Our home is filled with family pieces. All the furniture except our bed and sofa are inherited or second hand. I am 59 and my spouse is 61. Our house has lovely furniture.

I absolutely agree with you! I have several inherited pieces of furniture and a good portion of my crockery is vintage. Includes an edwardian sideboard and my grandmother's bureau too from 1910. I'm happy to see my own daughter's in their 30s have developed a love of older pieces of furniture that have a history to them. Older furniture is usually well made and far more robust. My daughter picked up a beautiful sideboard 2nd hand for £15! It's probably from 1930s. What a great thought to imagine your relatives having sat at the very same dressing table! I love that.

I wish that the schools offered a financial readiness course for all students but geared towards age appropriateness. Above all the teaching of a budget with an emphasis that this will help eliminate undo stress if done correctly. Knowing that bills etc can be paid without having to choose debt is so liberating. When I recently told my 5 year old granddaughter that I don’t like to go into store’s needlessly ( she wanted me to buy chewing gum), my 5 year old grandson looked at her and said “Mimi” doesn’t like to waste money. I think he’s got it.

We eat out once a week. It is something we enjoy and I work it into my food budget. Paying myself first ( sinking funds and savings) allows the freedom to pick and choose how I spend my money.

I married in 1970. My grandmother told me. Always have a five pound note in the back of your purse. (A weeks house keeping in them days) my mother told me. If you can't pay cash for it, you can't have it. In other wordd, save for it. Not bad advice to a young 18year old me.

I was married in 1973. My Dad told me to always keep a $50 bill hidden in my wallet so I could pay for a tow truck if I needed one. Because it was a $50 bill, I was unlikely to use it just to buy a Coke or something. Good advice.

The nice thing about being frugal is that you likely have numerous DIY projects at home, so you don't really have time to be bored and you will get really good at what you're doing on some of the DIY projects so that you're in a pro category all your own. Plus, when you do it yourself at home, you're creating fond memories that your family can look back on for years to come and reminisce about all the things the family did together back in the day. I would imagine people can't say the same when they run out to the store constantly because they haven't got the first clue of how to do or make anything themselves. 🙂

@@FrugalQueeninFrance I think boredom is like "learned helplessness" where unless everything is done for a person, that person is at a loss to know how to do it themselves, so they think they can't do anything at all. The person hasn't learned how to use his imagination and apply it to reality in his own environment. Bored people don't know how to think "outside the box". To bored people, the glass is always "half empty" rather than "half full". 🤔

You are totally right! When my children were small, I took them to „my school“ (my workplace), gave each of them a jigsaw and some wood and we as a family cut out the christmas tree decorations. It was a wonderful sunday and the memory remains - and so does the decoration.

My husband and I were very frugal all our married life, we had nearly a years salary saved when my husband who was over 50 years of age lost his job, unemployment ran out, and we lived frugally on the money we had set aside in am emergency fund. We began saving in earnest as soon as he started a new job at a much smaller salary and were able to save enough for a good down payment on our first home. then began saving again for retirement. He only missed 2 days work in his entire life.A year after retirement my husband became seriously ill for the first time ever with multiple serious life threatening illness including one where he couldn’t chew or swallow and food had to be ground. We are still very frugal but at 75 years of age I have restructured my food budget for whenever he wants to eat out, I can work around it in my food budget. That was a huge adjustment on my part as I value home cooked meals from scratch and growing my own food.

I agree about not needing to go out to eat all of the time. However I think it makes a difference if you live alone. I get great pleasure going out just for a coffee, people watching, company of being amongst people. I only have black basic coffee so do not spend a lot. I do all of my own painting, decorating, growing some of my food etc. so I can cope witj a coffee out. Most of my clothes and furniture are well over 10 years. Some furniture is from my grandparents.

I've lived alone as a frugal senior for years and that type of small social interaction does a lot for my outlook. I go back home and enjoy the rest of the day in productive solitude except for the company of my sweet cat, and I never feel lonely. I budget for the almost-daily expense, and it's well worth it to me.

Jane and Mike, what a brilliant video! I love that you present frugality as a choice to celebrate. I am celebrating that in 2023 I paid off all my credit card debts (after having them for 20+ years). I am celebrating that in 2024 I brought my overdraft to zero and started saving every month. I have changed my attitude from wanting to have more "things" to wanting to have money in the bank. I homeschool and I am teaching my 15 year old son to have his own income (we have a dog sitting business together), budget for what he wants and save at least 10%. Sometimes I despair because I feel like I started too late (I'm in my late 50s) and that I can't make sufficient progress but then I remind myself that the skills of budgeting and living below my means are skills that will serve me for the rest of my life.

I watched my parents struggle from poverty caused by bad health, and my in laws living grand lives because they were frugal all their married lives. I have lived in poverty in my own married life and then became very frugal as we earned more money with my goal of living comfortably like my inlaws. Poverty can never be normalized, and I feel so horrible for those who have to live that way. Because of the higher income now and our frugal lifestyle, I am able to donate money, food and other essentials to those less fortunate. That is the part of my life I am most interested in normalizing. Living generously. Great video Jane and Mike. You are both an inspiration.

Such a positive, uplifting video! We certainly seem to be marching to the beat of the same drum. I celebrate our frugality daily, and it has taught me to also have gratitude, for I have learnt that I already have everything I need, and gratitude for the skills we continue to learn as we strive to live a more frugal, sustainable and peaceful life. I get a huge amount of pleasure from having a delicious, nutritious home cooked meal every day, and never eat out. We certainly don't feel that we're missing out, instead we can direct the money saved from eating out into buying seeds to grow our own fruit and veg. That, to me, is far more satisfying and a longer lasting buzz feeling than a flash in the pan meal out somewhere. However anyone chooses to prioritise their frugality, it's definitely worth celebrating. Peace of mind is priceless 🎉❤

When I went on monthly pay at eighteen I divided my pay by five this meant I saved one fifth of my salary eight months. The person who trained me and a few others suggested we devide our pay by the number of weekends in the month, I decided to divide my pay by five every month.

In Australia we have an offset savings account. Whatever we have in that account is how much you don't pay interest on your mortgage. They don't apply the actual savings, that remains untouched. Every month I get to celebrate not paying interest on my home loan because we finally have more savings in the account than what we owe on the house so we pay no interest so our full payments go to the loan, no interest added

Hi Jane and Mike, I think people could really do with more restraint and also the courage to not be embarrassed by saying 'no'. Let me give you an example, I was a very stressed teacher and planned a career move over several years - preparing by living below my means, paying off debt and paying in extra to my pension. I finally took the leap at 45 this year and got another decent job (less money but WAY less stress and opportunity to progress). Anyway, after five months, we just found out there might be redundancies! I immediately put two trips I had planned on hold - one of which was with friends (a mini break to Lisbon in June). I told them the truth and said that, if I keep my job, I'd love to go but I needed to think about money right now as I may end up job hunting again. Yes it sucks cancelling but I have been in the debt cycle and that sucks even more! 😩 Thanks to my savvy financial planning in the past, if I do lose my job, I will weather that storm fine, until I get something else. LOVE the channel guys - apart from my sister, nobody else in my life embraces frugality so it's nice to have your videos to not only educate me but also inspire and entertain. When hubby retired, we got him a really nice grill. Stopped going out to eat at that point after a few disappointing steak dinners. For a reasonable cost i can get ribeye steaks, 2 baking potatoes and a bag of salad and we are good!

I do wish the schools would teach budgeting to our young. I was bought up by careful parents who accounted for every penny and never bought a thing unless they had saved up beforehand. One of my daughters desperately wanted a silver bag when she was 7 so we asked the shop keeper to put it to one side and my daughter took in two pounds every month (pocket money) till it was paid for then bought it home. What a day of silver bag celebration that was and a great lesson learnt! A very understanding shopkeeper too😊

I agree with everything you have said from teaching children from when they first start school to frugality being celebrated. My most memorable money moment was after 2 years of determination, perseverance and hard work, I payed off our last bill by burning it over a bowl of water, with our children watching to show them, and tossing it in that bowl, it was a great feeling of peace to have that burden lifted. I used to be a shopaholic and had a lot of debt. One day I just turned a knob in my head and changed. I paid off all my debts and I never felt as happy as when I got debt free. Now that I don’t have to pay debts anymore I started saving and every month I put a certain amount in my savings and if I’m able to put even more into savings at the end of the month it really feels like a party 🎉.

One of my friends and I share no spend weeks or months and we started exchanging items garden seeds and crafts items, when one has too much and the other needs it, it gets shared and used up rather than sitting in a cupboard for years, makes those times easy and fun, can also be done with clothes or food swaps.

YES budgeting should be taught in schools starting at a very young age. My parents started me off before I started kindergarten with a piggy bank. Save some, spend some, and some for church. I see being furgal as normal and those who live off credit as reckless. Jane just think of how many calories, sodium and chemicals we avoid by eating at home! Wonderful video as always.

We like you only ate out on Birthdays and a few other occasions I can count on my hand the times we had take away. We are now 83 and 74 and have enough money to eat out once a week, we have been frugal all our lives and now are enjoying a few luxuries, because of our frugal life we have a good retirement. No spend days are normal we buy what we need. My daughters got married less than a year apart I could mot believe the prices of mother of the bride outfits, I bought one outfit in Spain and the other in South Africa at small boutiques, so there was little chance of someone else having my outfit and if they hadI would have congratulated them on their good taste.

Our largest income deposit is my state,NC, USA teacher's retirement. I put 20% of the monthly income into saving then. It goes into different sinking funds for 1 year. The rest is put into the weekly budgets. The only dollars I don't track are what we each take for our weekly "allowance".

I would like to normalize and celebrate having “just enough clothes”. I have never been a “clothes person”, but now that I’m retired, I really don’t need much variety at all. I want to be clean, comfortable, and appropriate to the occasion, beyond that, I don’t really care. Mostly I live in jeans and knit tops, with black pants and nicer tops for church and “meetings” and a handful of dresses for “dress up”. I probably don’t buy more than five pieces of clothing a year. It makes life so much easier!

Your hair looks particularly beautiful today! I grew up in a family where my dad was paid on commission. Some months were lean. My parents woukd do the budget by my mom writing on the back of an old envelope what the bills were each month. SadIy they never made savings a priority. At least I had a foundation of budgeting although in my 20's I didn't save and actually overspend on credit, I turned it around and before I had my stroke I hsd amassed a decent amount in retirement savings. I found a wonderful financial advisor who has helped me by managing my investments and growing them so once I do need b to access them I will be in decent shape. Fortunately I switched from ac30nyear mortgage to a 15 year loans my house was paid off shortly after my stroke. I know I will always have a roof over my head. Frugality is a necessity for me but I have changed my mindset to look at it as making my money work the hardest for me.

A home cooked dinner is the highlight of our day. We love to cook and eat the best quality food we can get, which is always a fraction of the price of eating out. Like you we eat out a handful of times a year. Quite honestly eating out is so often a disappointment that we even take picnics and good coffee on a car trip. We know what we’re eating and how it has been prepared.

I’ve been thinking a lot about going without, making frugality the norm and it just makes such good sense. Between debt repayments, saving for university for our daughters, mortgage overpayments (hopefully in 2 years time) and then retirement there will never be a time when we can’t be frugal. Just booked my holiday to France. We didn’t go last year so we are spending a bit more this year. Taking my picnic rucksack and cool bag to fill up at the supermarket so we don’t need to eat in restaurants all the time. My preference actually. Once again, a very helpful and inciteful video! My husband and I are retirees in our early 70s and are so pleased to have made friends with thoughtful, and caring people. We all bring a lifetime of practical experience and skills to a very fun group. I love how we all pitch in to help with medical issues, home difficulties, relationships gone sideways and financial bumps in the road. For example, one member developed severe sensitivity to loud noises, and another has many dietary restrictions, but these presented no problem to the group. We share potluck meals at each other's homes and have been known to help out with housework prior to eating when one member was recovering from surgery and couldn't travel. Restaurants hold no appeal to us, so I'd say we've normalized not going out to eat.

First, your hair is lovely! A friend and I was talking about not wasting food, she said they don’t do that her house. She is quite wealthy so it’s not that she can’t afford it- it’s the waste and yes also the frugal factor. Budgeting is as DR says “ telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went! Yes, budgeting and money skills is something that should be taught in school. That’s a subject that you use Every day- unlike some of the mandatory classes that are never used again when they finish that class. Such a great feeling at the end of the day to feel accomplished and… you didn’t spend a penny.

I wish more people watched your videos, today New Zealand entered into a recession as well as the announcement of significant redundancies across the public sector (ministry of health, primary industries etc) my guess is that there are alot of very worried people with alot of debt wondering how the heck they're going to survive.

Very good video - as always! Thank you for being so positive about being frugal. I still work full time but I started living off of the ammount of money I will get, when I‘m retired. Some of my collegues and I do „ride sharing“. So I don‘t use my care more often than once or twice a week. It doesn‘t only save money, the ride is so much more enjoyable than driving alone.

Another great video! It is incredibly important to normalize saving! I had a friend who was financially reckless and would judge me for being frugal. At the same time, she would constantly borrow money from me and would need reminding to return it. Once, she went as far as getting upset because I refused to take money out of my credit line for her! She made significantly more than me. Surround yourself with people who will support you in being financially responsible! Needless to say, this person is no longer in my life and it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made! Thanks for the video Mike, Jane and puppies!

Hello, Jane. In 2021 we chose to move to another state to get away from crime & oppressive politics. Everything happened so fast. From obtaining working appliances, 2 working vehicles, (for -20F winters), and gradually fixing up this house…ourselves. We unfortunately incurred a debt that we are throwing everything at. Unexpected circumstances. We’re both seniors and, pretty much, on our own. Our health is good and we work on taking care of ourselves. Thank you & Mike for all your information & hard work. Kind regards. (We do have savings. 👍)

Teaching living within your means, saving and investing was a priority for me raising my daughter. It won’t be taught in schools sadly the powers that be want us indebted. It’s up to us to teach our children an alternative lifestyle from birth. Their worth shouldn’t be measured by what brand they wear or the car they drive.

Another great video I always thought a frugal lifestyle was normal! Till I started working and listened to some of my colleagues I think it’s wonderful if someone makes and mends things themselves. Great idea to verbalize and normalize frugality and budgeting. Really people talk about everything else (sometimes things I don't want to hear) but refrain from discussing that great taboo money. Speaking of restaurants and quality control in general: it seems to be on the down side. There are only two restaurants left for me. The others have decided against quality food and I have decided against patronizing them. (A friend comes in to visit once a week and always wants to go out to lunch. Instead I just make him lunch at home.) So there you have my 5 cents worth. Thank you both for the videos. Judy
