I had a hard time with this book. The first Sanderson book I’ve struggled to finish. I’d sit and share a meal with some of the characters in a heartbeat but I don’t think I’ll ever read it again. Tress I will read again some day. Secret Project 3 arrived today! Onward.

I was initially not enjoying it, thinking that it was too... cheeky, but I agree, I got hit hard with the feels, and so that counts for a lot in my book.

***Slight Spoilers ahead*** I read and found out (I think) that the actual handbook was more of a meta element, no too important for the story itself, right? Did I miss something big? I mean, in the first few chapters the main character, or shall we say ***spoiler*** Johnny, wants to read the scattered pages in search for clues of where he was or who he was. But then, the handbook meant nothing for the story, it just served as interludes between chapters and salesmen pitches to the readers. Other than "try to impress the people with knowledge of the future" there were no more hints to survive medieval England.

It was as functional as the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in that series.

I feel like the guide to surviving… was the book that we were reading that John wrote in first person.

I did enjoy it, though not as much as the usual Sanderson novel. I'm eagerly awaiting my hard copy though, I want to see the illustrations properly throughout the book (as opposed to clumped together at the beginning of parts). I also think it might hit harder on reread, knowing what to expect.

I recently read Night of blacker darkness expecting a really funny humor/horror mashup, but was deeply disappointed. The type of humor used just didn’t seem funny to me. Maybe if it was in the form of a series of Monty Python style skits it would work, but as a novel, it was yawn worthy. No shade to Dan Wells. I very much enjoyed his other books. Just not that one. And I very much enjoyed Secret Project 2 and this video. Thanks for doing them.
