Pro tip when you go to paint this pantry. Before you touch anything: take.pictures.of.every.single.shelf. Take things out by shelf and try to keep them together. When paint is dry, use your pictures for reference and put things back from whence they came.

Instead of repainting the shelves, you can use contact paper or shelf liner if you don't want anything sticky. Dollar Tree has some. I have put shelf liner in my pantry and fridge. It is easier to wipe and can be replaced if it gets really dirty.

It looks awesome!! Dave and you are so handy so consider pulling out the shelf above the baking shelf and add one inch filler strip to the supports (or move the supports up) to raise it. You would have to move the center bracket too but it would allow you to stack the tall containers. If you do it before painting it wouldn’t be noticeable. Also you can always use the cracked one for sealed items like snack bars, mini candy bars!!

I’m a lifelong Canadian farm girl who up until about 20 yrs ago was a 4 hr drive from the nearest Walmart , then a small city 2 hrs away grew enough to get a WM so now it’s only a 2 hr drive . I always get a kick outa how available everything is when we travel around the US during the winter . Rural is a VERY , VERY relative term I must say . I am grateful for the ease of Amazon now however as we are only 3 miles from a hamlet that has about 15 residents - but it has a church and a post office so Subscribe & Save is a god - send !

I use to avoid the idea of taking from a container to put in a different one. But I noticed once I put my 7 yr olds cereal in a clear container with a flip lid he finally started eating it. I discovered moving things from packages to clear containers and they stopped lingering in the house because it sort of reminded him that we had it. No more stale cereal that no one eats.
@allieshaw2531

I agree about the cereal. I put it in Tupperware cereal storers and my kids made their own breakfast so I could get my workout done. They are now adults and the containers are still going strong. The decanting takes time but worth it!

@RTCPhotoWork
@RTCPhotoWork 3 жыл бұрын
I'm kind of with her except for certain things will keep longer/better in the second container. Once I started decanting things like cereal and granola into containers, they almost never got stale. I'd say if pretty/no visual clutter doesn't matter to you, decant the things that aren't already in resealable packaging and leave the rest in their original packaging. Also, if pests tend to come around where you live, decanting can prevent critters from getting into your food. Because the containers are more sturdy than the disposable packaging most items come in, they have a harder time smelling your food and getting in to eat it.

My rule of thumb: if it’s in a bag and I use it often put it in a container (flour, sugar, etc). If it’s in a non resealable container and I don’t use it often but it in a container (oats, almonds, etc)

The only items I keep in these clear types of containers are everyday use items like (Oatmeal) or bulk items I need in easy-to-handle containers (flour, grains) and it’s easy to tell what is in it without a label. I use bins to group packages because I *need* to see expiration dates. Expiration dates help me with meal planning, too. My bins are labeled by the group they hold. I decided to stay with bins after a friend said she went to make pancakes and had no idea how old her mix was.

The first time I did this I ended up losing a lot of food because things with oils went rancid. The second time I put the smaller bags inside the plastic containers so it would be controlled, but also I'd have best by/ expiration dates and I could use up food that was about to turn. Pantry organization is a lifetime task in my opinion. I recently redid mine and only found 3 things actually expired and bad bad, pretty pleased with that.

@@lala_land3768 no, just flaxseed, chia seeds, brown rice, coconut flour.... anything really will go bad, but things with high oil content just have shorter shelf lives and without the best by dates I found lots of food was wasted. Those air tight containers are ok, except for all that air that is contained inside...if it is only half filled, that is an issue. The bags inside the container is an AWESOME idea, at least you can squeeze the air out of the bag and the container keeps things orderly.

I'll cut the instructions of a mix (like Bisquick) and put them in the side of the container. Your family goes through the food more quickly and I have a small family so it takes awhile. Someone mentioned washable sharpie and labeling expiry. You can order white or black paint pens on Amazon (I like the white for clear container/glass) and write the expiry on the back so when you pull out the container you know if it's still fresh. That said it sounds like you strive for minimal waste so may not be an issue since you use your pantry so much. Really great work here and a delightful video overall.

I completely agree with you. The only thing that comes out of the bag into it's own container is sugar and flour and that's mostly because I buy larger bags. Everything else just goes into baskets (for smaller things) and are organized together. It's a pantry (or cabinets). It's about being able to find the items easily, not looking pretty in my opinion. I also see it as just something else I'm going to have to wash.

Packages of snacks, the almond packs, or breakfast bars etc... could go in the cracked container

Your pantry looks great! I just learned from another KZbin homesteading channel that if you add 1 apple to your bag/box of potatoes it keeps them from sprouting for a longer period of time.

Pretty and functional! Your organization is how my pantry is set up except mine is about 1/3 of your size. If I had all your room I might be too tempted to go all prepper ready, ha!

You have the pantry of my dreams. I would paint the back walls turquoise and the shelves white and under each "section" of food type, I would put a label on the shelf of what type food belonged there so my family would put it where it belonged. When I win the lottery, that's on the plans!

You could keep those better homes and gardens baskets for chips and potatoes. I would add like 2 or 3 more baskets and place them where you store your potatoes now.

I think the trick to organization is to make it work for you and your lifestyle. While beautiful, the Pinterest concept isn’t practical for everyone. My pantry is ever evolving based on what I buy and use and honestly I feel like I rearrange it once or twice a month (moving items around to be used or to make room for more). Don’t feel pressure to make it so uniform, I use a hodge of containers collected based on what I could afford and what was sustainable. I think this looks great!

Anyone that said you should throw out everything and start over doesn't understand you are FRUGALFITMOM! I think the pantry came out good! As long as it is organized to the way you can use it that's all that matters!

Those cute baskets would look good on the floor. Put the potatoes in the bottom one and all your chips for now on the top one!

I'm still curious about your spice collection. This is a huge problem area for me. I don't have a lot of really large spices just tons of small ones and in a drawer.

Thanks for this comment! I hope she does a spice organization vid. I sometimes buy spices from the bulk section at Winco so I can buy very small amounts of things I rarely use. So now I have little plastic bags of mystery spices in my cabinet ! 😂

I bought an AllSpice wood spice rack from Amazon. It was pricy but perfect for us. It's just a square box with spice jars and labels on the lid. Stores a large amount of jars in a small space. Also, no dusty jars :)

@@lilybee_ how many spices does it hold? Do you need to take spices out of original jars to make them fit?

I moved mine to a full cabinet shelf recently. It’s wide so I can spread everything out and see it all at once instead of digging for something 4 bottles deep.
