I used to be horrible about impulse spending! I think I was trying to make up for something I felt lacking in my life. Very honestly since I started watching you and a few others that have taught me about being frugal, I've realized nothing I purchase can make me as fulfilled as Knowing I'm being frugal in order to plan for my future!

I used to go to a café every Thursday for 30 minutes while my son was at his speech therapy session. They had the best Earl Grey tea I ever had (it's called Nunshen) and it cost 3.5 euros. It was my moment and although expensive I didn't mind to pay. Then few months ago I came, ordered my tea and the price went up to 4.5€. It just felt ridiculous and I never came back. Now I'm taking tea or coffee in a mini thermos and wait at the therapist's waiting room. I saved some money ever since, and I happy about it, I'm proud of myself for finding out it was just a habit and I'm not deprived, it's really not important at all. My frugal muscles are definitely getting stronger :)

I used to be a shopaholic. About 5 years ago I went to the Action and bought a big load of knickknacks and when I came home and sat down for a little while I realized I did it again. The next day I went back to the Action and returned everything. The cashier was surprised to get everything back and asked me why I returned everything, so I just told him that I was a shopaholic and that I had to return it from myself. He just said okay and gave me my money back but I felt so terrible about it that I have never ever impulse bought again. Now I first think about how I’m feeling before going to shop, make a list and keep to the list. Whenever I feel that I’m not feeling well I just don’t enter shops.

It's so true, you are absolutely great just as you are, aging as a woman is a testament to our lived experience and wealth of knowledge. That is to be celebrated, not erased in overspending trying to regain a youth that's past. Fabulous video!

I am aging now, and I watch my friends ( in our 60s and 70s) look slightly ridiculous as they try to 'stay young' with hair cuts; putting on latest fashion make up; buying trendy clothes; cheap fashion jewelry. I feel sad for them. They are lovely as they are and have fabulous stories and a wealth of knowledge to share. When did growing gracefully or, at least, disgracefully, become a thing. Where did this cult of worshipping youth come from? Oh wait! From advertisers for profit for large corporations!

Hi to you both. I am guilty of buying on impulse . My eldest grandson has just won a place in a prestigious University to do his Masters degree. It has given me the impetus to save everything l can to help him achieve his dream . I have bought a tin that has to be opened with a tin opener, so the temptation to use the money for something that l probably dont need isnt there. It is a challenge .

We completely understand the feeling blah, the past week has been rough at best. My husband felt so frustrated with a project that he just wanted to cry, and at that exact moment my eye health demanded attention, with a concern, so while frazzled we took a break between 2 appointments we got burgers and root beer and laughed off our rough week, agreeing that we might have needed that time out, more than we needed. We agreed to deduct the cost from our food budget for the burgers and root beer, tightening our belts for the remainder of the month, and consider that a mental well being spend. We reminisced about our weeks struggles and laughed 🤣 😆 and then we let go of the weight of the stress.

I have 2 decompensating coping habits: overspending OR overeating. I have to monitor both. I reduced my impulse purchases (allowance, gasoline and dining out) by 21% this quarter. My goal was 10%, and will be this coming quarter. Tried a new diet and gained 10# in 2 months. Stopped it and have lost 2--ever onward!

Recovered impulse spender here! I home educate our children and we focus a lot on life skills. They have a monthly allowance and that’s theirs to do as they wish with. We’re about 3 years into it now and I’m really starting to see the fruits of my labour. The children are able to discuss money and budgeting better than I could even 2 years ago and it’s helped my naturally impulsive son (adhd) in so many ways. Something I also do is let them know that their wants and needs are important so if they say they’d like to do horse riding lessons every week for example and that’s outside of our activities budget we discuss what we can manage even if that’s a sinking fund for a twice yearly pony trek. Or if there’s a food they like but it’s not something we can have in abundance again we collaborate and see how it can factor in our budget. We don’t have an endless budget AND your wants and needs are important so let’s work it out together…the perfect antidote to parental guilt debt!

I am ashamed to admit that Impulse spending is a natural reaction for me. I think every reason you mentioned has been a reason for me to impulse spend 😩 At the moment, I'm very aware I'm lacking in self esteem and feeling very insecure so trying my hardest to not go off the rails with spending. However, i confess that yesterday I impulse bought a summer dress. Yes it's beautiful and yes I have accounted it in my April budget so it's okay, but if I'm really being honest, I probably wouldn't have bought it if I was feeling a bit more confident with myself. Going forward, I'm going to try and take on board your tips to pause and reflect before spending instantly. Also work on the confidence and self worth 💪

What a great video. I give myself $5 to spend impulsively at the thrift store, usually on something I can "play with" by sanding, painting, decoupaging, etc. When you were talking about comparing oneself to celebrities and other influencers, I had to agree. Before hopping on your channel, I had watched a video about influencers misleading and outright lying about their timelines so their followers think they keep superhuman schedules while looking fab. Then the followers think they're falling short and need to "up their game" with products and services. It's a constant battle. I finally backed away from a minimalist community because it promoted a donate-acquire-donate cycle.

This year, they are going on a month long trip - she is having to cut back ( when he isn't around - they live about 40 miles apart) quite drastically to afford the cruise. I'm not sure she really wants to go. It's a bit of keeping up with the Joneses I think. Other people's expectations huh?

We are all impulse buyers! Companies made us that way. So feel very proud of yourself every time you decline the impulse purchase. Be kind to yourself and don't be upset when you slip up. We learned how to shop via marketing, ads, etc. and we have to take time to unlearn those habits. Every small victory is important and helps you keep more money for other uses.

Today's video really struck home. I am a terrible impulse buyer. I really need to work at not doing it. I am a charity/thrift store shopper, but also have major depression, which I have been working on for decades. It's hard, but that dopamine rush you get when purchasing something is now switching to a dopamine rush when I bypass the thrift. It's still not quite as satisfying as digging around for treasures (treasures that I forget about when I get home), but the satisfaction is growing. You two are serious yet upbeat people, and I would not have guessed you too have days like my weeks or months. It's one thing to say you're not in this alone, but another to internalize it. Much appreciation to you for opening up and sharing about how you go through these periods, too. ❤❤❤

I am so sorry you have to deal with that struggle! Your use of the analogy of digging around for treasures for the dopamine hit made me wonder if you may get a similar hit rediscovering things by going through the stuff you've bought in the past by decluttering and organizing. I know how difficult it can be to even consider starting such a project in general, but especially when it's already a challenge to just handle the daily stuff. Perhaps, if you framed it in your mind as each drawer is a treasure chest and you have to dig through the "sand" (stuff to donate/give/toss) to get to the "pearls" (the goodies you really want to keep), maybe it would provide enough of a thrill to get the dopamine flowing. I know, for me, keeping my "mistakes" in the house just makes it worse for me and the clutter they create makes every aspect of my life more difficult as if my house is silently screaming at me everything I've done wrong or still need to do. Instead, every item out quiets my mind, every item given or donated makes me feel good for giving to others, and every organized space feels refreshing and makes the little daily bits of life easier. I wish you all the best on your journey!

Similar here. There’s nothing like a good thrift shop lol. I’ve learned to put the item in my cart and then just before checkout, going through the cart and asking myself if I still need it. The days that I can stay home when depressed and finding something positive to do are growing

Thank you Jane for making us understand the origin of our shopping impulses. A good idea would be to agree with a friend, to call on the phone when we have a buying impulse, or when this friend will be in the same case, to help each other through a friendly conversation to share an opinion about a book or a movie or an anecdote that makes us laugh. This will surely make us pass this impulsive moment, where we lose ground, to better return to the essentials and respect his budget while raising self-esteem. Friendship and mutual aid are priceless, it is precious.

Love the dog or lampost analogy - not heard that one before - it did make me giggle! I am never bored - not enough time to do everything i want to do - let alone the stuff i have got to do! Re getting older, some of my friends (60s and 70s) are making themselves look ridiculous trying to look younger - from the extreme of botox ( which just made her look permanently surprised!) to buying trendy clothes and make up ( which made her look like mutton dressed as lamb). This doesnt mean dont be stylish and have fun but be yourself. When did we start to worship youthfulness rather than the wisdom of age? Oh that's right..... when it became profitable for large corporations 😂

Hi Jane and Mike. When in the workplace, the phrase - "after the week I've had, think I'm ready for a bit of retail therapy" was often used, me included. Since retiring I don't seem to feel the same about spending as I used to, mainly because my needs are less now, especially with items such as clothing. Yes, I agree that when feeling down there can be moments of weakness and that having money put aside for such is a good thing. Also, the pause before you buy habit has resulted in me putting certain items back on the shelf and walking away. This has sometimes been something that has caught my eye on the way out of a shop and not what I had actually gone in for. On occasion, I may have gone back and purchased that same item, but by then, I have at least had time to justify the purchase. Other times, I have done so, realised I didn't need it, then later, taken it back to the store. Thankfully this doesn't happen much now and more often than not, I stick to my list. Yes, it is nice to treat ourselves I know, but at the same time, I'd much rather it be spent on something worthwhile. Thanks to you both for sharing another great video. 🤗

I impulse spend when I don't have a clear savings goal. Even if it's only a few dollars a week, mentally, I need to feel like there is a dream in the making bit by bit. I have dreamer art brain, but am quite practical. I want taxes, utilities, food etc. covered. I have saved up for, or sold unused items, to pay cash for another section of fencing. Its hard to feel relaxed in my beautiful back garden where people can see in and then start talking about what I consider my oasis of sanity, not intended for uninvited guests , stray dogs, or opions. 😊 I need about $1,500 for next section. Im so excited to have our garden to ourselves I can barely stand. Will be sweeter not stressing over debt from it but paid for in cash. Dreams can come true with patience.

Right now, my husband and I are on a nice holiday in France and we enjoy the long walks, riding our bikes and having nice picknicks. Yes, we splurge a little, but we have a budget for it. We are staying in an Air’b’n’b. I prepare food (I love cooking) and we chose to walk 1.4km to park for free instead of renting a parking space for 14€ per day. In retirement now and I don’t need much. I generally shop for just what I go to a store for so I don’t tempt myself to buy things I don’t need. If something doesn’t work out I immediately return it. Takes discipline but it’s my money so I need to protect it. Did buy some seed starting trays at Aldi’s because they were good price and I could save more money starting my own plants so it fit my priority but not a planned purchase. So I allow good buys that help save money

I used to impulse spend for a few reasons you mentioned: I was frustrated at work or even unhappy with the work I did, so I would go spend. I would also spend frivolously when I felt lonely and/or bored, and when I was stressed with my life or work. Not good, I know. I no longer spend for those reasons but the impulse is still there. It’s just now I have the habit of waiting, or going for a walk instead or even calling my husband to talk it through/use him as a voice of reason. Thanks for the great video.

Another fabulous video today. We’re early retirees living in the Peloponnesus Greece. It’s so easy to get caught in that winter trap of shopping and eating out instead of finding new hobbies to fill our days until the beach calls again. But thanks to you guys we’ve broken out of that trap. You’re a real inspiration to us, I really look forwards to watching your videos. Veg patch calling now so Happy Easter fellow frugals 😎

Love the colour of the jumper on you. In the past, I've spent money that I thought I would get. Usually overtime, at work, that I usually " could count on" then it didn't happen. I've learned my lesson on that one. If it's in the bank, and budgeted for, then okay.

I am just the opposite, I can put off buying something I need for months or years. I need new hiking shoes and my insurance company reimburses me for them but haven't bought them yet. The only impulse buy that I can remember in recent times is I saw a jumper that I thought would be adorable on my dog and it was the founders day sale at the feed and garden store so everything was 20% off so on the spur of the moment I bought it, she bounces when she wears it.

Very well said, nothing is an impulse buy if it is budgeted for. I like eating out at nice restaurants, getting facials, seeing a movie but it is all budgeted for, there is nothing impulse about it and my one rule is I save into my various accounts first and what is left over is mine 😊

In the last 5 years I have impulsed bought 2 campers at 3k each, well....ok. Heres the thing. I work for hotels, and at one point for a little over a year I lived at the hotel I worked for. During the first round I wanted a back up in case something went south. So it was a security measure. But I wish I wouldve saved that money. The 2nd time, when I moved, I didnt feel safe in my environment. So again, I bought a camper for 3k. It's a bit of a back up plan of mine, I suppose. I have recovered the money now. But I sure wish I hadn't pulled the money trigger. Until I was for sure I needed it. =/ I am in a good place now, and back on the road to recovery. But its been a long process. I still struggle w/ the emotions. Now, I consider it back up money w/o pulling the money trigger. I have learned, even though it was a hard lesson. It can always be worse, which isnt a challenge. But there it is....I still kinda wish I had saved my money & not spent it based on my emotions.... Thanks for letting me share

I used to overspend when feeling low in winter especially since I I tend to have mild seasonal depression. Usually it was books I splurged on. I found a way to feel better without spending literally by accident. One year I tore a muscle in my back and was told to take a bath daily (I am more of a shower person). I noticed that it actually lifted my Spirit. 😀 Now I keep a few bath salts at hand and as soon as my mood gets worse. I end up spending 90 cents on a fancy bath instead of 50 to 80 euros on a pile of books. 👍🏻
