I did not realise how toxic some people can be towards your amazing channel. It is all very well to say some people think you spend too much money on certain items, don’t live as environmentally sustainable etc etc. the thing is your channel is not about them it is purely and entirely about Jane and Mike’s life and the way you manage your life - not theirs. Believe me the people who look forward to each and every one of your videos value all your views and ideas. You are such a source of inspiration to others who watch you for ideas and inspiration. I now live in a flat without a garden but so enjoy watching you working in yours and seeing the pleasure it brings. I am a quilter and love to hear about your sewing projects (and look forward to seeing different quilts on your sofa). I am 73 and would not be able to cope with your property but do get such a lot of pleasure seeing you enjoy it, hard work though it is at times. It is just a case of “Each to their own”. You should never judge other people or criticise the way they live. If you are asked for your opinion, say on a purchase then you can make a constructive comment, otherwise if you can’t say anything nice it is best to say nothing at all. I am sorry you have to put up with such negative thoughts. Please carry on letting us in to your lovely life, it is a real pleasure for us to share frugality with you. Best wishes to you both from sunny Torbay.

Never doubt yourselves or what you are doing. I have watched budgeting and frugality channels for several years. I have learned of what I'm supposed to be doing, attempted to implement it, but only had minor success. It's been so frustrating. In your channel, I have finally found what I was looking for, and it has made all the difference for us. You actually teach us how to do these things. Following your example, my whole family has become more frugal, and I have made adjustments to our budget that finally work for us. I cannot thank you enough! I am binge watching ALL of your videos. Wow did that hit home!! I have family members who judge us for being "cheap",hillbillies, etc. Why don't we.....eat out, buy new clothes or at least more fashionable. Then we get criticism for buying a new car, after running ours to no longer worth repairing. And why did we get a big vehicle. Forgetting that we live 35 minutes from the nearest store, and in a snow prone Northern area, as well as owning trailers to haul in what we need, because no one delivers to the sticks. Yet they are all dumb founded when we plan 7 weeks throughout Europe, on a budget. I am living my best life and just wish that they could do the same...more quietly on their side.😊

Jane, you have a lovely home that you and Michael have worked hard for. Both of you are entertaining, bright, and are willing to share your frugal journey, which is greatly appreciated by many. Those that are critical (and rude) will always be that way because they cannot see outside of their own little perfect bubble, which I imagine is not as perfect as they would like everyone to believe. My dad used to say "let it flow like water off a duck's back", although the comments are still hurtful. Sometimes everyone makes missteps and may say things that are taken in a way not intended to hurt, but that does not excuse those who are adamant their way is the only way. You and Michael are well loved and respected contributors to this community, and we are very fortunate to have you sharing your experience, wisdom, and ideas with us all. Social media has given people permission to say what they think with no responsibility for it and now it's ingrained in them and they speak that way in public. I have had 12 cans of soup, veggies and fruit in my cart and while waiting in line someone will call me a hoarder and start being mean. Others in line will speak up too. When I got to the cashier she asked me why I bought so much. That happened 3 times at Wal-Mart so I won't shop there anymore. I do not have to explain my actions to anyone and I refuse to get in a confrontation over 12 cans of tomato soup.

I'm an only parent ,and very frugal right now because I'm saving for my daughters college. I dont want debt at all. And I have no debt But I always get judged that I'm not buying new stuff all the time, that I never buy myself clothes , that my cell phone is 5 yrs old , that we are extreme minimalist in our home, my daughter I still buy her clothes and stuff but it's amazing what people say. I'm low income too, with all my extended family high income. When I told them to buy me no more gifts , that I couldn't afford to buy gifts for others any more , I was accused of being cheap. People would rather you go in debt to get them a gift than me having financial security. It is hard being frugal at times, but it makes it worse when you are made to feel bad about it
@zuzanna4380 Жыл бұрын
Really glad you pointed these things out. Each person has their own financial assets and a different financial situation. Some people have more money to spend on the things they want. Some people need to save on whatever they can to pay off debts or to save a certain amount of money. We all spend and save on different things, to a different extent, and it's everyone's personal decision! Also, under the umbrella of "toxic frugality" i would also put all the people who think that it's always better to save money than to save time. In some situations i will spend money to save time - for example hiring a team to paint my house in two weeks instead of trying to paint my house myself, which will surely be cheaper but also take me 2 months to do that on my own. "cheaper" is not always better and some people refuse to believe that.

Thanks to both of you for teaching us and encouraging us in all of our frugal journeys. It seems to me you are incredibly giving to share so much with us. I was in the classroom for 32+ years and it wasn't difficult to find a strong correlation between the parents that felt free to criticize other parents, students, and families,( oftentimes on social media!), and their own children learning to bully other children. These people are modeling bullying for our young people and then they act surprised their own children bully other children. A lack of respect is at the core. That, coupled with extremism can result in rudeness. Personally I don’t think there’s a remedy - they are beyond help. They like provoking and creating a vortex. For some reason they get more attention this way. They never improve and only cause you to be defensive. Personally I would just block them as they don’t add any value. Just because we are frugal does not mean we don’t care about quality control. You have a nice high quality group of subscribers and those that don’t fit in can just move on.

Reminds me of comments from people when you're on a diet. "Why are you eating that...thought you were on a diet?!" "Why are you buying that, thought you were frugal?!" Yawn, haha. I had one main objective to teach my elder children and that is "It's not what you have coming in, it's what you have going out" and she is falling victim to belittling behaviour from her partner's family because she'll purchase food that is better value for money, like frozen sweetcorn instead of fresh. Guess which one of them is better with money? I love what you share, whether we would do it ourselves or not. We evolved as human beings through sharing and I think you typically impart fabulous knowledge for the generations coming after us. ( I'm a Gen X by it's last year). Maybe I don't care about my clothes and prefer to use that money for books or the cinema. My budget is organized for my priorities not for anyone else. Some people don't understand that being frugal is also about choosing how to use your money wisely for the things that really make you happy.

I am constantly reminding friends and family that their is a big difference between being frugal, and being cheap. We have a budget that we adhere to. We WILL spend money, trying to buy the best quality at the best price, if I was cheap, I would buy the cheapest I could find. In the long view, the cheap version will be replaced many times over, before the quality one wears out, saving time and money in the long run.

Interesting video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. To me the social media realm is a different world than real life so hard to compare. Written word lacks depth and context. You made me smile when describing yourself as British. I am 100% Dutch and we are known for our directness. Not saying what you think is an insult to my personal strength as I would rather be slapped in the face with the truth than be kissed by (white) lies! My favorite comment: Oh I wish I had your money. My response is , yes, we have some money, but we can’t get to it. And you wouldn’t like our life style. Yes, I am eating leftover meatloaf on my basement grown spinach again. I’ve been retired now 5 years, retired at age 60. Still eating leftovers and liking it. Enjoyed your garden the other day. Nice work. 💙

As you said , people probably would not insult you to your face. My take on your site is you can do well by being frugal. You give us ideas. My guess is your being frugal has allowed you to have a nice home and a car etc,. To me frugal is not being wasteful. I love your videos. You have wonderful suggestions. Keep it up. I don't know you but I like you Jane.

You're right! I think that the anonymity of social media has eliminated the filter many people used to have. And then some are just rude boors (spelling?). I really love the sharing of advice, inviting us into your home, cooking lovely dishes for us. I really respect you guys for your hard work while still feeling joy in it. Keep going on the path you've chosen. It serves you well and teaches others who are open and willing to learn new ways that work for them.

Love your channel - look forward to every post. Years ago I wrote a very simple, cheerful blog about gardening. The haters always commented and told me everything I did was wrong, my posts were stupid, etc. It was eye opening! xox

Yes Jane, I agree. I am going on 60, and I have gotten to the point of if there is something about me you don’t like, I really don’t care.

Hi from Australia. Many thanks Jane and Mike for sharing your life and experiences on your channel. Love your content and seeing your home and where you live and all you share. Agree with what you have said and sorry that your receive this type of negative feedback. It is unfortunately a way that some choose to be in their lives and towards others. I look forward always to your new content and again - many thanks.

Everywhere you look, TV, media, magazines literally everywhere there is the overflow of ideas/opinions and then other people. People need to understand their opinion should be requested not given freely. I frankly do not give a hoot what other people feel, I do seek out advice for ideas though. I have mentioned before how you have helped me in so many ways with money and I am forever grateful. I know some know-it-alls' like my ex-husband and it definitely is a control measure, I just say now - You do you and Let me do me. Best wishes always.

Those must be the same aggressive drivers on my commute, the ones whose diet is the right one, the attached neighbor who will make any level of noise or smoke without any regard to the well being of others. Each day we have to make a gazillion decision about lots of things and overall try to do our best as we go through life. It's nice to get older and not worry about impressing anyone, as we follow our path in life.

I am absolutely astounded that people can be so rude and disrespectful towards you and Mike and anybody else. The world has changed for the worse since we have had the internet. Keep up the good work and I hope you have a really good life living It as you see fit. Take care from Australia

Good for you Jane! Each to their own is one of my favourite sayings! But Vive le difference! You do manage to make me laugh even when you are having a rant though, and the “if you’re frugal you shouldn’t have dogs” comment floored me, unbelievable. Thank you for all of your excellent advice, I certainly have learnt a lot from watching you xx

I have heard videos about the thing about living in a house as opposed to an apartment. ..."No one needs to have that much space as in having a yard and a house - we should all live in a very small space - in apartments." I just thought, "Wow - judgmental." You all are doing great - and thanks for the channel.

Haha it is so ridiculous it’s comical. Thank goodness there are far more decent and kind folks out there. The best thing about getting older is Pffft, who cares what they think. I’m sure you are barraged with judgement/harassment having a frugal channel. I appreciate and enjoy this channel so much! Thank you.

Well thought out and done! Part of the issue might be"just because I can be dismissive about someone's choice of frugality because it doesn't match mine, should I ?" Instead sharing what one does enriches and broadens the community of frugality.

I am on my own frugal path because you guys gave such great advice! I don’t consider myself as frugal as you, but I don’t live in your shoes! I take on board your ideals and philosophies and make them work for me, it may not be exactly how you would do it, but it works for me. What kind of person would I be to criticise you after you’ve taken the time to help me? Online trolls and bullies of any kind are just sad people who are troubled and need an outlet. My friend laughed at me for my money saving pots. Now, however she can see that I am able to do work on my house or garden because I’ve saved for it. She has started saving with me for Christmas plus she is saving her “ coffee money” too. (Money she would have spent each day in Costa ) She is amazed at how her funds are building up and she’s not laughing about saving anymore! Everyone has their own views and needs but we shouldn’t bring down others for theirs. Live and let live! If your a person who leaves ugly messages and your reading my comment, for shame on you! Look to your own life and if you honestly cannot find fault with it you are not fit to find fault in others! Jane and Mike, thank you for opening your lives to us and helping others! You are doing a fantastic job, please don’t stop! Have a lovely bank holiday. XxX❤

Thank you Jane & Mike for all you do to teach us how to be good financial stewards and to appreciate what we have. In America we're constantly pushed into consumerism and it's SO easy to get caught up in it that it almost defies logic. I am also finally living a debt-free (including mortgage) life and it's channels like yours that help keep me focused. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss Please keep being who you are.
