First I want to thank you for introducing me to the high starch low fat vegan choice as advocated by McDougal. I did more research, gave it a try and for the first time ever can say I feel great. Too much fruit makes me jittery, while starch is a well of stability. Think of the vedic body types - each requires different fuel - fruit is not for everyone. You do not need to defend your choice. Your choice is right for you and you are a positive influence in the world.

No Mad Maybe the WFPB community will start to bring into play things such as vedic body type? That would be fantastic! I am Kapha-Pitta and do extremely well with basically unlimited fruit. I mentioned it in another comment, but I have attempted to cause myself to crash from a blood sugar spike by adding white sugar to dateorade, no success. Too much starch, at one time, causes a stuffy nose, for hours. O, and it seems that if anything makes me crash, its starch?! lol What body type are you?

Ryan Harlow It would be great for the community to embrace that people are not one-size-fits-all. I was raised on rice and gravy and still love rice and gravy - just hold the side of cow please. I tend toward endurance - so probably Kapha - but my personality is probably more on the Pitta side.

It seems the trend is towards this. Everyone coming together under the common thread of whole-foods/plant-based. :) ...it is interesting that you are also on the kapha-pitta side. It is interesting as we have different experiences with fruit and starch. It goes to show that there is a lot more unique-ness to each individual than most of society thinks!

Pretty much same happened to me. I was rawtill4 mostly (few raw days here and there) for more than 6 month (I'm vegan for more than a year), at first I was highly motivated and followed rawtill4 to a T. I ate around 2000-2500 and I was stuffing myself (especially at dinner time) at first (I ate this way a few month), then I just realized that it's not right and I JUST DON'T BURN THOSE CALORIES. I'm not tall, I don't do much activity, I don't do 20km bike rides few times a week, I just don't need that much! I burn around 1600-1800 (on active day). So I stopped eating that much, but because of that I started craving some not so healthy products - that's where dilemma is - if you don't stuff yourself, you will end up eating something not healthy. At least that was an issue with me on rawtill4. And yes, I did gained some weight, but not much. Then I decided to try a Starch solution (for many reasons, mostly because fruits got very-very expensive here and I just was tired of carrying heavy bags all the time), and now I just need less calories to feel satiated and I don't have to stuff my face and I feel much more free in my food choices. So as I said I burn around 1600-1800 so I just eat 1400-1600 and feel good and losing weight. One more thing - I was really wanting to believe that "unlimited calories" myth. Bu seriously - why do we need to eat more than we burn? You can't pour more gasoline in a car's tank than needed. I'm in harmony with my body, and my body craves exactly amount of calories that it's needed, it's always been that way, and now to lose weight, I just need to make sure to keep 100-200kcal deficit every day. It was hard on every other diet rather than plant-based one. Phew, that's a lot of writing! Forgot to mention - I still love fruits and I eat light fruity breakfast, then second breakfast is oatmeal with berries.

Great Video! Its so so so very important for each individual to find what works best for them. Too much starch, at one time, causes me to have a stuffy nose for a few hours. I have never experienced the sugar hi/low you were mentioning (I have actually tried to cause this for myself by adding sugar to dates and water!...to no avail, which im super happy with!) Its great that this entire community is beginning to come together and not be so divided! Its ALL about whole-plant-foods-based diet!!

Ryan Harlow [Its ALL about whole-plant-foods-based diet!!] And here I thought it was about eating healthy. Silly me. Oddly enough, eating healthy for most of the history of man (B.S.- before smoothies) included consuming animal foods.
@Sevendandra

+danL1011 Actually, the agricultural revolution (here in the U.S.) was much more beneficial to the paleo Indians then any animals were (food wise) much more sustaining once they were able to cultivate crops. Look up the American triad or "three sisters" once Europe became aware of them they spread like wildfire across the globe. Animals at that time had become extinct (giant buffalo) and the Indians were in great need of nourishment eating bugs, dirt, rotten wood, and other shit, with agriculture they flourished. Just sayin.

Sevendandra[Look up the American triad or "three sisters"] Thanks I will. I'm always interested in learning new things. [Animals at that time had become extinct (giant buffalo) and the Indians were in great need of nourishment] I'm confused. What Indians and what time frame are you referring to? Buffaloes were plentiful in the plains into the 1800's until the white man killed them all. Agriculture is the root of all advanced civilizations. It forces people to settle down and requires a whole new set of social structures not necessary in a hunter gatherer society which can remain very primitive. But my comment was about food. And man has always consumed animal matter for nourishment. Some nutrients are simply easier to obtain from animal matter. Bugs are an excellent food source btw. It turns out a "vegan" community in India did not suffer B12 deficiency b/c the grains they consumed contained bug droppings and carcasses.

I think fruit is the most amazing food. I was going to put some negative comment here, but you are right. As long as it is vegan, and not too high in fat, and it works for you, then go with it! The one comment I would add - if you have weight struggles, then you should consider intermittent fasting and cut out breakfast. Have your first meal at around 11am or noon. Your body will be very thankful.

Fruits are not the best for sure, i only put on a lot of weight following rawtill4 (more than 10kg for sure), i still have to deal with nasty issues like lack of nutrients (my iron and zinc levels are a mess, i have to take supplements and go check my blood more often than before thx to this stupid diet) i had months with blood sugar levels going crazy, back pain because of the weight i've gained and of course strech marks. rawtill4 is bullshit and it can be very dangerous and damaging for sure, it's not normal to put on weight like this and water retention is a clear sign that something is not ok in your body just like skin issues (remember the body always try to evacuate nasty stuff and if it cannot, it will try to dilute the crap which cause water retention and not eating salt will not help you if you are in a permanent inflammatory state because you still eat stuff your body don't like). Also, i lost weight, cellulite (which i gained on the rawtill4 diet), water retention went better and my entire body was no more inflammated a couple of weeks after i stopped eating tons of fruits and too much for my real physiological needs. I'm never bloated now, i feel way better, i don't spend my entire life in the toilets, i'm not obsessed with food and how much i must eat either, of course i still eat fruits but not everyday and not a ton of them because to be honest i'm quite disgusted of them since i've inflicted that rawtill4 bullshit to my poor body. People be serious with your health, listen to real doctors and not imbeciles on the internet, you cannot be healthy with a diet based on fruits, you need fat more than just 10/15% a day, you need to eat lot of greens for minerals, fiber and good digestion and grains and legumes are needed if you are vegan to balance your diet. The starch solution was elaborated by a real conscious doctor with amounts of knowledge and wisdom = safe and the best for you. thx for your work and you are looking great Hannah :D

Personally, my mood is so much better on a fruit based diet. I feel so much better and just everything in my life is better with fruit! But then again, fruit makes my stomach grow and grow and grow! While starches make me feel so much more satisfied and comfortable in my skin, my mood is crappy. So I'm just sticking to a balance between both for right now :)

After forcing myself to eat 2500+ calories on rawtill4 and gaining almost 20 Ibs I switched to Starch Solution and lost about 15. I had plateaued on Starch and missed the energy I got from raw foods, so I have been trying to eat a fruitarian diet for a few weeks now and noticed right away amazing, predictable digestion and so much energy that I have had to start running and biking. This time I am not smashing in food so I feel much better. And my tummy is so flat all the time because my digestion is on point. I thought I would die without my rice and cooked food at least for supper, but the less I think about it and don't make it a big deal (plus binge watching Ted Carr :-) ) I find it easy to just eat raw food all day. Thanks for the great video!!

Potatoes and rice have more protein than fruit, which helps with satiation, and therefore weight loss. When I first went vegetarian, I was eating a fruit-based diet and was juicing a lot. It worked for me at the time. Fast forward a few years... Since going vegan I don't crave fruit as much. I have a fruit-based green smoothie in the morning but lunch and dinner are usually cooked. It depends on the day though. I'm sure with summer coming I'll eat more fruit (hello watermelon, I've missed you!), but eating starch based in the winter is way cheaper, warming, and satisfying.

I was doing rawtill4 and eating so much all the time. I thought I wasn't doing it properly unless I felt sick after every meal, and had had a massive food baby. I would struggle to get a breath in. I switched to starch and now I eat less, but feel satisfied. It's so convenient as I'm still in school. I was also slowly gaining weight. I switched to starch and am now 6kg down already. Starch is definitely best for me :)

Interesting that the comments are mostly (all?) in a grenade that starch is best. I find the complete opposite. I love fruit and the light feeling I get from it. Starches make me feel so heavy and full. I enjoy the quick and easy digestion of fruit. I like being hungry every couple of hours. It makes me happy to have the opportunity to eat again. (I had to work hard to eat only when hungry, so being hungry more often is a bonus!) I have learned to adjust my caloric intake from fruit so it's spread out throughout the day. If you know you're going to be hungry an hour or two after eating, then eat less calories. 200-300 calories will prob fill you up for the time being. Then have another 200-300 calories. Simple. I don't know where people got the idea they're supposed to be full for hours after eating. Quick digestion is the sign of good digestion. After a lifetime of sluggish and troublesome digestion, consuming a diet that moves on through is awesome!

Veggie V May I ask if you have starches with fat? For example, do you always eat potatoes with vegan butter/oil, rice with salt and also some fat? I found that if I eat pure starches without any additives, I feel great and there is no sluggish feeling. Takes some time to adjust if you never ate starches without anything (I did), but it feels great afterwards. I did a similar diet many years ago when the Starch Solution was't really the Starch Solution, but the macrobiotic diet. I always felt great, but I was young and got influenced by some fad diets. It was a huge mistake.

+Vic & Mary "Another cause of fatigue is the sludging of blood that follows a meal high in fats. Do you recall going without lunch when you have an important meeting in the afternoon, because experience tells you that soon after a meal you’ll be sleepy and sluggish? Molecules of assorted fats from your meal enters the blood stream from the gut, and immediately coat the circulating red blood cells. Uncoated blood cells bounce off each other naturally and are flexible enough to bend and twist through the smallest capillaries, in their zeal to take blood to all the cells in all the tissues. Once coated with fat, however, they lose that essential elasticity: they stick together in clumps and become relatively rigid. The overall effect is a lowered oxygen content in the blood and worsened circulation to your tissues, which you experience as muscular weakness and lassitude." www.drmcdougall.com/health/education/health-science/common-health-problems/fatigue/

Thank you for this video. I was rawtill4 for a year, it wasn't working for me, I gained 25 pounds on my size 1 frame, was ALWAYS hungry, shaky, got sick all the time with colds even the flu, migraines, severe acne, you name it I had it. But I fought so hard, ignored all these things because I wanted to be rawtill4 so bad. I found Nadja on here, watched all her videos from beginning, then when she turned starch I was like "ohhh no whyyyy" and wasn't interested in starchsolution. But the more videos I watched, the more interested I became, and finally decided to try it at the beginning of April of this year. And oh MY its amazing. I am not following it super strictly yet, eating as much fruit as I care for because I like that, but my results are so good. I feel so much more satisfied, I already feel smaller, my acne is still there, but its improving a bit, Im not shaky, my headaches have lessened. and it only been a couple weeks. I hope one day to be more fruit based, but I will probably mix rawtill4 and starch solution to my own design once I find where my good place is. I am so glad I found your channel. Starches FTW! Humans are starchivores. So I am not surprised that starches worked better for you. I have lost around 50 pounds so far on a starch based diet. I typically get my fruit at breakfast these days. I do a smoothie for breakfast. Here is what's in it: 2 cups mixed greens (kale, spinach, chard), 1/2 cup of rolled oats (gotta have some starch), 1 Tablespoon hemp protein powder, 1/2 cup mixed berries, 2 teaspoons sugar, water. That's a great start to a day. It has the sugar from the fruit and sugar to get you going plus the starch from the oats to keep you going. I add the protein powder just to make sure I get a complete protein in my diet.

Its is frustrating to me because I am very disciplined and I follow and listen to all the advice of other people and still, no weight loss on fruit and salads. I also like a fruit breakfast and startches with vegetables for lunch and dinner.

I've been vegan for over three years, and I find I can't eat a ton of fruit without suffering from extremely high blood sugars. I'm a type 1 diabetic, and after watching freelee make videos about how great fruit is for diabetics, I started eating huge fruit smoothies in the morning. I'd be uncomfortably stuffed by the time I finished it, yet an hour later I'd be starving and my blood sugar would be 400. When I did a week long strictly starch diet (against the strong wishes of my doctors), I found I couldn't keep my blood sugars up! After eating potatoes all day and cutting my daily insulin in half, I remember at one point driving down the road and blacking out because I hadn't realized how low my sugar had gotten. Still gotta work on it to find a happy medium, but long story short I much prefer the starch based diet. Especially potatoes, I actually find rice to be boring as heck.

But I'm on Starch Base Diet since one month and my weight is now very stable, and I eat lots of food :) I was like you starving 45mns after eating a lot of fruits especially after blending them like a 10/12 bananas smothie (1000 calories). An other aspect of the Starch Diet, I feel much more Joy in eating and generaly in Life ( and I was not the type of sad guyu before.. So thanks again for creating that video!

"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new." - Socrates!? I somehow doubt that this ancient philosopher focused his own energy on coming up with trite motivational phrases. (But i am pretty much in agreement with the starch vs fruit thing.)

omg i feel exactly the same. I love fruit but if I have a fruit meal for lunch I WILL be hungry an hour later. Plus I just can't eat that much sweet stuff, if I've eaten quite a bit of fruit during the day I just really really crave something savoury and the thought of eating more sweet stuff just really puts me off.

Right now I'm trying to do Rawtill 4-till-I-run-out-of-fruit haha then I turn to the starches. Honestly I suck at eating fruit monomeals but can eat rawtill4 with smoothies. Other than that, I love my starches!

I agree. I like fruit, but I love vegetables. It's easier for me to have potatoes, or brown rice, quinoa, lentils , etc. I love spicy foods! It's way easier for me to eat healthy starches & veggies than it is to eat a ton of fruit.

This was really helpful! Thank you for making this video and sharing your experience. I have been RawTill4 for a while but I don't feel very balanced and all the sugery/sweet meals don't feel that satisfying. I love rice and love potatoes and just veggies that aren't sweet basically so I think I will switch to eating more startches. It took me a while to admit to myself :) since it is almost taboo to say that the fruity lifestyle does not work for you so I was in denial basically hehe. So refreshing to come across this video. Again, thank you!

I love bananas, I can eat around 6 per smoothie and feel fine, above that I feel very sick, get shaky and feel like I can't focus, which definitely cannot be healthy! I still eat bananas & some raw veg, but I live off porridge/pasta/rice/potatoes!

Agreed that in this lifestyle you have to find what works for you. For me a high fruit diet works great. I do like a little starch daily and of course my greens. I tried more starch and my digestive system didn't feel as great and I gained a little and actually didn't feel satisfied eating mostly starch. I don't do any particular thing except high raw plant based with a little starch when I'm craving it and that is what works for me. I'm glad you were able to find what works for you because sometimes we can feel like something is wrong with us if a certain thing doesn't work for us.

I used to have the same experience with doing raw till 4. I love eating fruit for breakfast I still have a smoothie once a day. But eating it for lunch just didn't cut it for me. I would have a massive banana meal and feel hungry an hour later, or be craving starch. I've found a balance now and that's the most important thing :)

Awesome video! I seem to have one problem though. Weren't you actually eating rawtill4 and not fullyraw? Because I share the same opinion with you that it is the easiest to lose weight on a starch-based lifestyle OR a fullyraw lifestyle. However, I believe that rawtill4 is kinda detrimental to weight loss. At least, that's my experience. And I thought you were doing rawtill4 as well!! :O Not sure... Anyway, my starchy weight loss story: lost about 6 kgs in 3 months. Now I am back to fullyraw and enjoy it (which I did not do the first time) and I believe I am losing weight as well :)

Hey Hannah. Love your channel as always! Just wondered how long you did the fruit diet for? Were the shaky feelings not just detox? Or judging by what you were saying, perhaps it was because you were trying to eat way more than you should? I realise that you did this video over two years ago, so perhaps your thoughts have changed on this?

I don't notice a huge difference weight wise with either diet but I tried rt4 fruit based for at least a year and a half and its exhausting for me because I HATE bananas! I would force myself to eat them and I've always been more of a savory kind of person. I really don't have much of a sweet tooth. Luckily we have options as vegans. There really are so many ways to eat Vegan its about finding what works best for you.

Interesting how our bodies are so different. I normally eat fruit til noon and feel good. I tried to eat potatoes in the morning, I wanted to take a nap by noon. I stick to rice and beans at lunch and potatoes in the afternoon and evening. Potatoes help me sleep.

I never heard of strach based diets before a month ago I read in a magazine. To put a tsp. Of potatoe strach in your smoothies 2 times a day. So I tried that, because I wanted to loss weight. I have one smoothie in the morning. I'm not hunger for lunch. Than later around 7 pm I have dinner. I lost 3 pounds that week. I don't really do it now. I was looking for more info. About it. What do you think? I don't like potatoes.

I don't know how much I've lost in terms of pounds (scales are kinda triggering for me), so the entire time I've been high carb I haven't used any. But obviously I gained wait initially when I went rawtill4 and the weight loss after was sooo slowww. Tomorrow is my 1 year five months being vegan and I switched to starch a couple weeks ago. I can already tell I'm thinning out and my mom and sister even commented on it, so with those results already, I have high hopes for what I'll get out of switching to starch based:) Ideally I'd like to switch back to mainly fruits after I've gotten the results I want though.

I just don't understand why Vegans can't have a balanced diet? It seems a lot of Vegans on KZbin are promoting *this diet or that diet*, why not just a *normal balanced Vegan diet?* Fruit, Veges, Grains, Nuts, Seeds, etc, why is it so Hard?

So that means if I want maximum weight loss I should either go starch based OR fully raw? Will having fruits for breakfast and starches for lunch and dinner ( like what you are having now) affect my weight loss?
@HighCarbHannah
@HighCarbHannah 9 жыл бұрын
Life's Great No not really I find my weight loss is pretty steady this way. its hard for me to eat starches in the morning and I usually have a very small breakfast anyway so I just have some homemade fresh juice (32oz) or a few mangoes or something and then have lunch early (which is my biggest meal) and then dinner. Im going to do a what I eat on saturday :)

Love this! Where can you find a Facebook group that supports highcarb stuff? I'm looking for some support/high carb friends, as I'm in college and trying to eat starch-based. But I'm mostly refined to cafeteria food (but I make batches of rice and sweet potatoes at the beginning of the week). I'd love some support haha:)

lisa lewis yes if you want to lose weight to the max, then McDougall says to eat 0-2 servings of fruit. Also, yes whatever starches you like as long as it's a whole food and not like pasta or bread. Add in tons of greens to, soups and salads and steamed veggies are all super filling and delicious and filled with minerals :) you got this!
