I LOVED this video, you've given me so much great advice, I watch all of your videos on figs, I work in grocery, so to me it's cheaper to buy lettuce, than to invest that time, besides, I'm a lot older than you and trying to retire in the next few years... and the prices, I think you're right, I don't see them going down either.. I started watching because we were both in zone 8a . But I live in Georgia... And my weather is nothing like yours?? I'm still trying to make sense in my head why we are in the same zone, and you are SO much further north... Also, I'm not growing garden vegetables, my time for that is over, sometimes I still watch until I can see Dale❤️ I love seeing that lil guy...

Yes, we had to replace all 6 of our apple trees since rabbits girdled the trunks 2 feet high down to the ground, as the snow melted. I never saw anything like it! It would have been their 3rd summer since we planted them. We were so looking forward to fruit, then bam! All our time and money was wasted just because we didn't put the fence rounds back around them after we mulched them in the Fall. We bought 8 new apple trees this past spring and put the fence rounds back around them. Now I just hope mice don't get them. We also have a lot of deer we need to watch out for even though we live in a village.

Time to learn how to graft and grow from cuttings. Government gets scared when people grow their own food.
@TheMillennialGardener Жыл бұрын
Some you can, some you can't. In order to graft, you need the rootstock ready to go, and then the scion wood has to be in season. Unfortunately, grafting only makes sense if you're able to plan 1-2 years ahead of time. You have to grow all that rootstock first, which takes a long time. Most trees can't be grown from cutting, and of those that are possible, they often don't grow well and need a specialty rootstock. Unless you're growing figs, you almost have to buy a tree as a backyard grower.

Yes I got a branch from a peach tree pruning, cut into 8 sticks and plonked them all into a bucket of dirt, 3 are sprouting leaves now it's spring here in NZ, I'm just learning but next winter I'm going to go around town and ask for cuttings from different trees, I did not expect this method to work, don't know how many years it will take to grow and produce though, these would be good to give away too if they actually grow and get to a good size, I imagine fruit trees growing free everywhere

I would recommend calling Stan at McKenzie Farms in Scranton, SC. His prices are very fair, and he grafts simply the best trees. If you want a small rooted cutting for something like a Key Lime, kumquat or something naturally dwarfing, Briteleaf sells them at low prices. However, I do not recommend you get a rooted cutting for an orange tree. They will grow full size and be huge. I will only buy a rooted cutting Meyer Lemon, Key Lime, kumquat or other small shrub-like citrus.

It was very difficult to keep it alive in the ground in the heat but I managed to finally get a few feet of growth with grass clippings and old potting soil as mulch. I`ve taken two cuttings from a center branch and may get more because they may not take root. The potting soil I`ve ordered has been terrible and very little grows in any of it. My sister knows people with fig trees but lied to me repeatedly about bringing me cuttings because I bought solar power for my camper to have air conditioning and heat when the power fails each month. Thanks! Fruit trees are a great investment. With the prices going higher, it's even more important to be sure we are buying the varieties that will grow in our areas too. The big box stores will sometimes ship the same fruit trees to every part of a state, even if the state (like mine) has 5 different zone numbers (6 to 10). We have to be careful to check the chill hours requirement because a tree that will do great in Flagstaff won't produce in Phoenix, even though it is sold at a Phoenix big box store. I save some money by purchasing smaller trees, knowing that I'm planting them for the long run. And even these smaller trees usually get a little fruit the first spring/summer after I plant them in the autumn.

Last spring I ordered some Asian Pear trees from Home Depot (online orchards) and I was impressed with the quality and growth over the two from Stark on a grafted rootstock (one died). Just replaced the whip with a European dwarf Pear (Comice) to allow the roots to establish over the winter months. I believe I paid around 40-bucks through Home-Depot and the tree was in a rooted pot.. I agree with your perception of inflation and the proposed 3.2% reported does not consider food or energy, the two biggest expenses for consumers. I also noticed fertilizer is stupid expensive and some of the products I used are not available in large sizes, even tree spikes are on the rise, reasons I'm building a chicken coop to cycle garden waste into fertilizer and generate some food in the process.

I agree with you about the investments. You said almost everything I’ve been saying for several years. It took about five years for the first ‘extended family’ member to understand that if I live ten years after planting trees that almost everything will have been producing tons of fruit, nuts, etc. It’d be worth it. I always thought so. My only fear is that the owner after me, when I die, will not be a farmer/gardener and cover everything with concrete. That’s why I try to buy things that look pretty, too. Never underestimate the stupid or the lazy. I just bought two olive trees from One Green World (Frantoio & Arbequina). Oil and olives would save money by another aspect and look nice, too.

Yep! I wish everyone understood just how important growing & sustaining our gardens are. VITAL! Having my new land in NE Texas has been akin to a painter having a blank canvas. What an exciting time! I’ve been waiting with bated breath to get my fruit trees in. Now that the time is here, and I saw the prices, I thought there must be some mistake. I was physically sick. Some of them are absolutely outrageous in price. Scary expensive. I narrowed my search to only Texas farms in order to eliminate the freight. I hit the jackpot when I landed on Bob Wells Nursery…it’s 30 minutes south of me! 🙌🏻 I got everything I needed EXCEPT my Mayhaw trees. They were sold out. But, just 15 minutes from Bob Wells I found a wonderful farm with lots of Mayhaws available. I leave tomorrow to pick up all my new trees! 👏🏻👏🏻 AND absolutely yes, they are an investment for our future. My goal is to get as close as possible from never having to step inside a grocery store again. Another invaluable video from you! Thank you 🙏🏻

I went to a nearby orchard and was able to purchase a 20 year old grape vine for a steak. That's right I traded a porterhouse steak for a 20 year old scuppernong grape vine off the winery. He pulled it out of the ground with his bobcat. I got grapes the next year. Also, I traded the orchard next door a pomegranate tree for a basket full of tomatoes to can. I traded a box of 22 ammo for a granny smith apple tree. Moral of the story if you are broke you can still find ways to get fruit trees. Great upload Dale. ;)

Greetings from SF Bay Area! After many searches, I recently purchased (2) lovely 3-ft fruiting olive trees, from online grower Bay Flora located in Berkeley for very reasonable prices. Each tree cost around $40/shipping $15, and were received securely boxed within 4/5 days in perfect condition. Their prices were much lower than other online growers I found, plus they even had a Kalamata that no one else had available. Bay Flora is a grower-only with no retail location, but they had some interesting varieties like jujube, caper bush, Japanese sour plum, etc. As California regulates shipments from out of state nurseries, I felt lucky to find a tree grower with well-priced quality trees. I don't know what outside states they may ship to... Your thoughts and observations are incredibly grounded and sensible. Thank you for breaking down the details so clearly.

I bought a Eureka lemon tree from a local nursery and it was $50. Home Depot had other varieties of similar size for around $42 I think, but I wanted Eureka. I want a lime too, but both because of cost and space I might try grafting it. I just watched your video on that subject. It's very intimidating but that's what research is for. You are a good inspiration. I hope you are doing ok with these shorter days. We're still a month away from winter solstice and it's insane how short the days already are. I worry about you. Please hug Dale for me and remember the long days will return.

I wish, but they are across the board with nurseries. I doubt all the online nurseries got together and colluded. It seems pretty uniform across the board, which implies it is due to fixed cost increases.

Not at Briteleaf where $15 still gets a nice rooted cutting and $25 gets a nice 3 foot citrus tree.😊

You should start promoting growing seedlings and propagation techniques, and grafting. Also promote soil health to minimize or eliminate fertilizers. There are soooo many examples of thriving food forests and orchards that don't use fertilizers.
@TheMillennialGardener Жыл бұрын
I do have videos on grafting. The problem with grafting is you need to have rootstock available, and for many trees, you need very specific rootstock. For example, if I were to plant peaches in my area, I need rootstock that is both nematode resistant and resistant to Peach Tree Short Life disease. You need to have them on-hand and ready to go at about 1/2-3/4" in diameter. Then, you need a place where the scionwood is available at the exact time you're ready to graft. It's just really challenging. In order to have a strong grafting operation going, you need to have the mother trees planted around your property to take wood from. It's a major undertaking. A person that simply wants a new fruit tree needs to just buy a grafted tree, because the time, preparation and expense to source and prepare all these things isn't reasonable. I recommend starting annual vegetables from seed and propagating figs by cutting since they root easily and you don't need a rootstock variety, but when it comes to sourcing new varieties, you just have to buy a tree. I suppose a gardener could self-propagate trees they already have if you don't mind having numerous varieties of the same tree, but for a little backyard like mine, I would personally be bored by it.

Unfortunately everything you said was absolutely true You might also take in consideration the weather to hot in some areas other areas to much rain disease and especially with citrus trees they're short on root stocks in many areas. Knowing this info I ordered abundance of root stocks. I sold my 2-year-old fruit and citrus trees recently I sold them for $50 a piece I had so many people I did not have enough trees I sold 86. On the first day I went to a big box store and seeing what their prices were just for saplings and was shocked. I had a variety apples peaches plums and many verities of citrus. I think your info was really good 😊

The reasons for increases all true. Many needed higher wages, but at the same time rent, food, ect all increased so no one is better off than before and fixed income households suffer. I said, OMG! The prices are going to be too high. Order from companies that offer free shipping. A lot of employers around here say they can’t find employees and ones that will show up. To get fruit they need to be planted ASAP! Don’t know if it’s possible to get fruit here because the weather is too hot too long in spring and then it freezes and kills them. I have a variety but they are slow to grow. I think it was you who shaded the plants in spring to slow bud break. The only co I recognized that you listed was Stark Bros. What concerns me about nurseries is where are the plants being shipped from. In the north Z5a it’s a concern because of hardiness and of course when they are shipped. I’ve never planted in the Fall until this year and hope the trees survive because they came from SC. Our local seed/plant company now gets their plants from MO 😮. Watch the warranties offered by companies because many have changed. The trees I just ordered were I think 30 days so I did pay for extended warranty because how will I know if they survive as we head into winter. Many companies offer 3 mos when it use to be a year.

You missed a key factor on inflation, and the is corporate GREED!! Look at Big Mac index, where workers in Scandinavian countries make a living wage and the prices have not gone up for things like a big Mac. Corporate GREED and the broken system we have here are a big reason prices have gone up
@gg-gn3re Жыл бұрын
yep. It's literally all corporate greed. We run manufacturing and several other things and nothing has actually gone up in price on bottom line materials. All of the shelf stuff has gone up substantially, though.

Up yes... but double!?!? You are a smart man. This video is not about the price of fruit trees. (I mean, it is but it isn't. It's about a bigger problem) Thank you for making a much larger point. That said, in Canada one wouldn't generally find one of these trees for $200. It's gross. I feel for people who can't grow any of their own food. The first time I saw a $5 head of lettuce at the store that was it for me... I believe growers should be trading more plant stock. Thank you for making this video.
