I really hope so, too T_T I religiously watch the reactions as soon as they drop. Very few people react to Fruits Basket and even fewer have such in depth discussions about it. I'm really hoping the views get more as the seasons progress.

Hiro is one great side character. He pisses you off a lot but he also is a very well-developed character and I cannot wait to see your reaction to him in the future. Kisa is always and will forever be too precious. Ritsu story is not really shown in the anime but it is interesting. I really appreciate your discussions at the end of the episodes.

Ah yes... The introduction of "Ben SheepHiro!" He goes through what I feel to be the most interesting and well thought out character arc in the series. Especially for a side character.

Thanks sooo much for the episode. I actually like hiro a lot. Yes he is a brat and what he did to tohru with her diary is not right. But as episodes and season goes I love his character development. And to be honest he is blunt but he is actually not that wrong. After you finish fruits basket you will notice that, in a way all he said during the show was actually right. Just his way of saying it was wrong. Also I found it very interesting, that there's someone who doesn't instantly just love tohru. Hiro is a complex character that I honesty love.

I'm late commenting, but I'm glad you're back! I really missed this reactions last week ☺️ I know everyone hates Hiro's introduction, but I kinda loved it lol. It was so different than everyone else's! He's a little brat, but he's also bringing up important themes about Tohru imo... I know the show says the problem is not the nice people, but the ones who take advantage of them, but I also think it's important to have a backbone. Like, imo there's a problem being shown here with Tohru allowing herself to be so heavily pushed around by an 11 year old 🤷🏾‍♀️ There's only two characters in this show that question Tohru, and Hiro is one of them, which is why I love him

Ritsu's roof scene was handled slightly differently in the manga. (Unfortunately the awkward handling of gender/queer issues was exactly the same). But in regards to the Sohma's very blasé reaction to Ritsu standing on the roof and tearfully swearing to end it all ... the reason they were unimpressed is that Ritsu is the Monkey. In the manga, at one point Ritsu literally does slip off the roof in the middle of his soliloquy... and then promptly catches himself with one arm, pulls himself back up, and goes back to his speaking like nothing had happened. He was never in any danger of falling, and all the Sohmas knew this, which is perhaps one of the few gags in this episode that was actually a bit funny. (Although Ritsu saying exactly the wrong thing to both Yuki and Kyo was also pretty good.) (And just in case this needs to be said: I use male pronouns for Ritsu because that's what I'm used to from the Furuba manga, not because I disagree with other perspectives on this character) When I was a teenager reading this scene, the one thing I got out of it is that the family looked at Ritsu like "sigh, this again with the usual drama" whereas Tohru saw it as a cry for help and took Ritsu seriously. I don't think the Sohma's were necessarily wrong to react this way, because even if played straight, Ritsu's behavior clearly runs the risk of a "boy who cried wolf" situation, but it was interesting to think that an outsider may sometimes see things that family members may not. Also (and sorry if this I sound exactly like One of Those Manga Readers ^^;) in the manga Hiro was introduced later in the story, after quite a bit of plot had happened and there weren't that many unknown Zodiacs left. He was one of the first one who didn't immediately like Tohru, and even though he's admittedly pretty awful (at first), in a way it was refreshing to have someone who wasn't enamored with her healing energy.

Interesting discussion as always! Episode 19 isn't my favorite but I think it touches on an important issue. Trans/gender non-conforming people obviously struggle everywhere in the world, but I imagine that it would be even more difficult in a country like Japan, which values conformity so highly. On top of that, you are expected to always make sure that you aren't bothering anyone around you and apologize for causing the slightest inconvenience. Keeping that in mind it makes a lot of sense that Ritsu would feel like they have to apologize for even existing. Just wish this idea could've been explored in a slightly less loud and annoying way.

Tbh in some ways it would probably be easier for me to be non-conforming with the fashion and styles and the androgynous looks. On the other hand with the rise of conservatives, it's probably horrible to endure with family and suffering in silence if no one understands. In other places that aren't in Japan and don't really have gendered pronouns it does seem easier to blend in and not have a fight on the street cause someone got mad at what pronouns you use for yourself.

Those 2 episodes are actually better than I remembered on rewatch... so many little things and lessons worth noticing Even the way they react to the Mogeta anime is very telling of their characters I like the 'anime inside an anime' concept like Bondman in SpyXFamily both having different styles the authors are having fun putting some light side projects into the main one👍

it's funny I actually grow to really like hiro's character xDD he's such a brat and at rock bottom in the beginning, that he only can improve from there. he does get a lot of character development for a side character

Really enjoying your reactions and discussions! And I can't wait to see your take on the rest of the story. Ritsu is probably the least developed of all the Zodiac characters, and the rest of their story is pretty much left out of the anime. But he and Mitsu do continue to be friends, possibly eventually more. Hiro shows up with the worst case of pubescent brattiness known to man, but at least we got to see why he's so angry. Of course it would be better if he didn't spend all his time childishly taking it out on everyone else, especially Tohru, just because he doesn't dare express his anger toward Akito. I'm really looking forward to your reaction to the next episode....

Ritsu's episode is very dated, but having his character there in the old anime as a young queer kid meant so much for me, who I wasn't as bold and bright like A-ya.

These 2 eps, 21 (and maybe 15) are my least favourite eps in the series and I usually skip them on rewatch especially 19 I’m just not a fan of Ritsu’s character same with shigure’s editor and the su*de jokes in general. And while the show is really good in transitioning between funny and serious moments it didn’t work in this ep, it was jarring….. I would also like to add that Tohru does NOT nearly fall like that in the manga it was only added in the anime for dramatic effect (the show does do that sometimes) and I did not like it at all… Anyways it will only get better from here and s2&3 are gems I would really love to hear your discussions and theories as the story progresses One other thing the order in the anime is not the same as the order in the manga there was quite a bit of rearrangement happening sometimes as things like for example character introductions/ backstories are more episodic and self contained.(that was the case with 19-20 as well). One of the interesting things to do as manga readers while the eps came out was trying to figure out the order and piece together the chapters

@@blueframedwindow835 He was also (spoilers) So irrelevant to the whole story! he just has one bad episode and then dips for the entire anime… Which is also honesty for the best as he is pretty annoying and attached with a very tricky subject like gender dysphoria … which in my opinion if you’re not gonna handle it in a nuanced or meaningful way better not touch it at all (Not to blame the manga too much of course it was written in the 90s it is just outdated)

@@antidave True true same thing applies with lgbtq characters. Fruits basket does teases a bit of lgbtq themes as well and same with Ritsu but it does so more in a joking and lighthearted manner never actually taking it seriously or focusing on those aspects sooo a lot of people can take it as joke and dismiss it if they want… Not the worst thing (I’ve read some shojo with gay characters portrayed soo bad it’s really buffling) definitely not the best that could be done either

I think one thing alot of people miss about the soma. Is that they litterally cannot go against akito. Because the whole familly turns around the cursed childs. And the cursed childs are forced to obey god. Just like the animals obeyed god in the little story.
