It helps to understand how practicing correct positions and playing correct notes can all be reinforced by repetition. That's encouraging to me with my 75-year-old brain!

Thank you for the reminder to be patient! Starting lessons at age 65, I know it's good for my brain, but trying to get my hands to play different fingers at the same time was SUCH a struggle. I kept playing each hand slowly (separately)...and one day it was like something cracked open and allowed my brain to do two different movements at once! I really felt it was a bit of a breakthrough...I like to think I've created some new channels between my ears! lol

Katie...I too am starting at same age! We can be each other's cheerleader. I also play piano so I am also facing dilemma of opposite fingering on right hand from what i am used to on piano. I know the break-thru will come...but ugh!

It really does help to understand these details of the learning process. Encourages me to not get discouraged as I practice! When I've thought I'm not making progress, perhaps more is happening than I believe!

Thank you 🙏🏽. You are very clear and helpful. This is my first time learning to play the harp. You make it seem so simply. I 💕 love this instrument. I will not give up practicing every day, and will sure continue to watch 🤙🏽

Excellent presentation, Christy-Lyn! Also: when practicing or performing music all areas of the brain are engaged (Levitin, Daniel, This is Your Brain on Music; Plume, a member of Penguin Group. London , England, 2007)

Fascinating subject. Well done. I have read that the results of practicing may not be immediate - that often the next day, after you've "slept on it," the skills you've practiced are a bit easier. And a bit easier the day after, and so on. As if the brain needs a bit of time to "learn" the new habit. That seems to be the case for me, and it offers me a bit of encouragement that the task that seems so hard today will probably get a bit easier as the days go on. No doubt related to the advice that daily practice for 20 or 30 minutes is much better than two hours once a week.

Yes, that totally makes sense when you consider what's happening in the brain, right? Thanks for your comment, Frank! :)

That is exactly what I needed to listen to. I have been impatient to learn the harp, especially playing with both hands. I still struggle to put them together. Let's practice more scales in contrary motion haha Thanks for sharing!

A most excellent valuable teaching. This 14:13 time could be copyrighted as a valuable tool to apply to train many skills in life to people are learning. But not to stray from practice makes perfect in learning the mastery of playing the harp. " I'm going to strum and pluck it til I get it." it is so worth it. I found this out on 12 string classical music on guitar. Yes, go easy on yourself but practice sets and patterns and scales. It will come to you and is most rewarding.

A good wake-up call... Be kinder to my brain 😂.. Erik Scherder a Dutch professor of neuropsychology wrote a book about this. It's called "Singing in the brain". I think I'll visit the bookshop tomorrow. Very interesting topic.

So cool! It really does help me to be more merciful with myself when I know that my brains are physically growing and developing. You wouldn't expect your muscles to grow enormous after a couple of workouts at the gym. So why would the brain look like Swarzenecker after just a little bit of work :D...

Brain and Mind behavior 101. Thanks for the college level freebee. I feel like I CAN learn it. Any doubts I still have are based on the way I play guitar......I can't stand to play without a pick, so I don't pick much. I pick on Be Not Afraid, and On Eagles' Wings when I feel patient enough, but that's all I do. Is this really a problem for harp interest? It seems like it on the surface. I hope finger picking is a different experience on the harp.
