Ive been using a PS-2 for a few years for most all activities requiring my amps (gigs, rehearsal, practice) and I could not be happier with this device. Ive used attenuators for many years to manage stage volume and this is really the first and only load box that is totally neutral and flexible. The effects loop is the bonus as delays can be after the power amp now (clean delays, reverbs, chorus) rather than in front of the amp. Yeah, occasionally delays sound good in front of an amp, but generally I want that stuff after the amp.. (especially live). Although my gigging days will be ending soon (by my choice) Im still considering getting a Ps-100 simply for recording and as a backup.

I have the PS-2 and the PS-100....best piece of gear I own...the power amp sounds fantastic...one thing though,they sound a little different from each other....The 50 watt seems brighter and punchier...the 100 watt is darker and thumpier.....I have to put the Highs switch on the 100 to the top brite position to match the sound of the 50 with both switches in the middle.....I guess different tubes are the reason?...and the volume in the 50 is much more touchy,just barely cracking it gets loud pretty quickly,whereas the 100 I can turn it up quite a bit to match the same volume...different tapered pots??....I love both,but I kind of like the sound of the 50 watt one more for these reasons....

Sonically, they're practically indistinguishable, but to get that would require carefully curating the AB test since the levels do operate slightly differently. On the PS-2, push in the front panel level switch to make it act more like the PS-100. As you get up in volume, the 100 will begin to show its additional torque. Tube brand can make a subtle difference in tonal balance. The Ruby 6L6s can be a little toppy and less punchy, but those aren't currently available. With the current Sovtek 6L6, the tonal balance between the two will be less pronounced. This is hair splitting though. Thanks for your comments!

@@FryetteAmps Thanks for the tips...I didn’t mean to imply that one sounded bad..They both sound great...just little differences I have noticed using both...My PS2 has Ruby’s in it...the PS-100 has Sovteks....I think maybe the difference in the volume sweep at the low end of the spectrum is making me perceive one as brighter than the other....the switching options on the 100 are why I got it...I plan on getting one of the foot switches as soon as they are available....again,both are great,and I have enjoyed using them..

I think their Power Load IR unit and its predecessor is way better than the PS2A or PS100. For re-amping just go via one of the line outs into the effects return of another (tube)amp. This setup comes with less hum and no fan noise, which bugs me when playing at lower volumes using the Power Station. A lot of people buy a Power Station for playing at (bed)room levels. This in mind, a unit creating substantial fan noise is a bit counter intuitive. Power Station is a great concept, but in my opinion they cramped too much electronics and tube circuits into a fairly small enclosure. This is asking (so in my studio) for problems when it comes to noise issues. Not so with their Power Loads (or the Suhr Reactive Load).

Good point all around. I bought a PS 100 for my own custom built amp, I added a line level output to reamp or send the output signal to Fx or other devices. Tried connecting my amp speaker out to speaker in on the PS and it was nice. However did not compare to playing the amp wide open with a 4x12. So I did the old reamp trick but using the line out of my amp into the line level in on the PS. I use a Captor X for sim, IR and load (now that fan is annoying) . And there was a significant difference. Even turning everything off (presence, depth and the other switches) It retain the original signal very very close. Don’t get me wrong nothing beats a wide open amp into a 4x12. But this way, at least for me worked well. I just adjust the line level pot on my amp and the volume on the PS to get the sound and feel I am looking for. So to me the PS is my power amp with the added benefit of an FX loop and two different setting’s in front of the PS that I can switch from. So with that I added more possibilities. Now I am still bitter about 1 speaker jack on the PS. I need to get a Y speaker box to connect my 2 speakers cabs. I could use the other speaker out from the Captor X but it is not the same (not even close).

There are only so many jacks you can jam into the rear panel, but that doesn't limit how many cabs you can connect. It only limits how many you can plug directly into the rear panel. For the small percentage of users who want to run two cabs simultaneously, use a simple hardwired Y splitter box or cable and set the Power Stations output Impedance selector switch accordingly.

[UPDATED WITH ANSWER TO THE FOOTSWITCH LED QUESTION!] It is worth mentioning here that the Fryette PS-100 does NOT come with a footswitch as supplied! For a £1000+ unit, I find this extraordinary. You say that it works with any standard footswitch and it does. Except that it seems to have at least some problems with LEDs. Note that even in this video, at just after 5:20 the footswitch in use there has LEDs which do work but the make is taped over and the Fx Loop is labelled Boost, obviously not Fryette's own! Using a simple non-LED switch works fine, Channels switch and Loop turns on and off. The problem is that the only indication of channel selection is then on the front panel of the amp which is not ideal in a live situation and the Fx loop has no indication at all, not even on the front panel. As soon as a standard red LED is added in series with the switch the switching action stops and the PS-100 does not respond. Now lest you think I am an electronic idiot, the footswitch wired this way works fine with both my array of Marshalls and my H&K GM36, switches correctly and LEDs in the footswitch work fine, so I think we could say that this is a "standard footswitch". The Fryette just sits and looks at me. Now you do have your own footswitch - which of course isn't available anywhere in the UK. To get a special order from your suppliers costs £60 for a simple double footswitch with LEDs. Yes, that is correct £60!!! Your Fryette support simply does not respond to a polite request for advice on how to wire in LEDs so they will work. The answer MUST be simple but you seem to almost insist we buy your footswitch if we want LED indication at our feet - but you don't even supply it in the UK. The PS-100 is an awesome piece of gear which solves the perennial problem of response and feel at low levels completely. I love it! The marketing seems to be off a little bit in terms of helping your customers to use it to its fullest with the least fuss - and expense. So come on Fryette, couldn't you just tell us how we SHOULD wire those LEDs to allow the unit to function with indicators on the floor? We don't need a full schematic which is obviously not feasible. It isn't really too deeply into the realms of "intellectual property" is it? EDIT: I have now had a chance to look into this on a live unit. The answer is ridiculously simple and took about 5seconds to spot. Fryette switch a negative voltage on their control lines so the LED must be reversed. Nothing more than that. Put the LED in series with the switch with its cathode to the tip or the ring towards the unit and its anode to the switch and through it towards the sleeve and ground for both switches. This is reversed with respect to every other footswitch that I have come across. If I'm wrong on that PLEASE TELL ME, I am not averse to being told I have been a plonker! No resistors are needed in the footswitch, the current limiting for the LED is performed inside the PS-100. So there you go. Any old PS2 type footswitch and two LEDs are all that is needed. Why couldn't they just tell us that outright, they advised us to get a "standard footswitch" after all. Sure it was easy to check and find out but it was no real secret of their circuitry was it?

Actually that is one of the Fryettes features as its reactive load box that does reamplification. The load portion captures the feel of the amp well, the reamplification does not alter the output in any negative ways. The path stays analog and tube throughout. You can use a 5watt amp at a gig without being overpowered by the rest of the band in a mix. Ive done it many times in a live setting.

If I have a bunch of preamp pedals and OD/Distortion/Fuzz pedals and wanted to use a PS-2 to soley amplify them... I have been watching these. I once owned a VHT UL from 93-2017. Certainly was the amp of my youth. I learned more through the Henning video especially gleaning the comments section with the various Fryette answers and explanation. I understand the effects loop in the power station is not buffered. I'm trying to understand the buffer concept. (Question 1) Could you explain to me the multiple ways the effects loop could be used live and/or in recording situation? I feel the buffered effects loop of the Bogner Helios and XTC 3534 induce some type of change to the tone (probably the buffers?) (Question 2) Would the effects loop of the Power Station "take the blanket off" the tone when used with those Bogners? I do feel the Bogners have a great master volume already established in the amps. The loops leave much to be desired.
@FryetteAmps
@FryetteAmps 3 жыл бұрын
1) A buffer in your context is used to convert high impedance to low. Since the PS Loop is already low impedance, no buffer is required, which means no noise or headroom issues cause by your typical active "do everything" buffer.. Regarding application see: fryette.com/content/Power_Station_PS2A_Manual.pdf 2) Yes. You simply do not use the amps loop. You use the PS loop instead. The big advantage there is that regardless of the channel setting you use, for the most part you are keeping final volume within a fairly reasonable range across all channels, which makes reverb and delay settings in the loop a lot easier to manage. But you'll have to have the PS in operate mode. Even though the amps master works well, you will be able to further optimize and enhance the sound of the amp under load, so it's simply an extra took in the tone kit.

Hello, great explanation and video. My question is where is unity gain on depth and presence knobs? 12oclock is neutral setting or is knob all way to the left neutral setting/unity gain?
@FryetteAmps
@FryetteAmps Жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as unity gain on the depth and presence controls, since they are not gain controls. They are feedback trim controls and how effective they are, or how "normal" they sound to you depends on the amp you're using, the cab/speaker type, and the volume you're playing at.

@FryetteAmps
@FryetteAmps 3 жыл бұрын
Edited to state "no *passive* attenuator" which was the actual intent. Note that the TAE uses a solid state power amp, does not present actual real-world operating impedances to your amp and does not allow access to the unprocessed analog reactive signal. It's always going DA/AD before reamping. Besides that, the TAE FX are nice.

The PS-2 will introduce distortion if you push it to maximum power, just like a clean home stereo power amp will introduce distortion if you push it to maximum power. The extra headroom of the PS-100 is the result of more available power to play at higher volume. You can push that one to distortion too, but it'll be more painful:)

I’m very disappointed with my PS2 It Does not sound good with my AC30CC or Super Reverb RI. For one thing the when the amp you are attenuating uses different power tubes than the PS 2 then it’s not going to honestly sound good in a re amp situation for smaller amps as advertised. So it appears I am left with an an average sounding thus overpriced attenuator. If I’m wrong on the please tell me how to work around it. Conceptually it would make more sense if you could switch out the type of power tubes otherwise it’s all for not. What the hell was I thinking 🤔
@FryetteAmps
@FryetteAmps 2 жыл бұрын
The power tubes used in the PS are irrelevant since tubes only make a particular "sound" when the circuit design determines that they will. Tube Hi-Fi amps are well known for their linear sonic qualities, and same goes here. Next, the purpose of the voicing switches and Presence/Depth controls are to help you shape the behavior of the PS to complement the amp you are attenuating/boosting. Try to get unhooked from the idea that "tube sound" is the problem and work with the controls to get where you want to go. If you need further assistance, please contact support@fryette.com
