I agree. When I went up to Mesa Arch, it was after the crowds had left. There are still a lot of nice photographs to be had. It might be worth going there just to capture the Milky Way at night. You could also light up the arch artificially. You should probably get a headlight to wear as there are a lot of places to trip and the natural steps down to the arch area are of irregular size. Canyonlands has a lot to offer.

Of course, the easier way to shoot and better resulting image is to shoot pre-sunrise to avoid the "starburst" with its uncontroled lens flare. You also get a better glow off the underside of the arch, which is what the shoot is all about, instead of photographing your lens defects. At this time of year, it can be bitter cold there. The idea of a preview trip is good; we didn't and missed the highway turnoff, loosing 45 minutes and nearly missing our opportunity. Easy to do in the dark at this location.

I shot at both places and I hate heights. Mesa isn't bad as you stand pretty far from the edge. At Dead Horse there is a path with a railing, but you can go off the path, stand 10 plus feet from the edge and still get spectacular shots. In fact the shots back from the rim are better because you can include some interesting foreground. Now if you really want to sh*t your pants, try shooting Horseshoe Bend in Page Arizona. A bunch of people have died there because they got too close to the rim and it's over 1,000 feet straight down. Google it.

We had single use film cameras with us. It was 2000. Man, if I had my pro rig now, I could have gotten some epic shots. Point is... access can always be had. I bet there are ways to see those sites with some privacy today. Contact the Oljato chapter house and see what sort of assistance you can provide them in exchange for an intimate/private tour.

Right, I can't trust any image I see from a professional photographer or professionally web-designed tourist website. I try to look for amateur images from laymen tourists. If the shot is beautiful despite their mediocre cameras, then I feel comfortable making the expense & effort to visit. Of course, even cell phones are getting better at taking images, but that's ok bc typically those aren't photoshopped. To be safe, I try to look for images that are dated much older. Also, written reviews tend to help as well.
@KandiKlover4 жыл бұрын
No it is. You just need to learn to think for yourself and ditch the brain dead commercialist mentality. These overedited images are garbage and the only reason it’s done is to catch the eye of short attention span morons “ooh shiny”. Than other unoriginal idiots see that and copy it. It’s like a disease. Just do you and forget everyone else. Pretend no one exists and it’s only you and discover your own photography.
