If you choose the 857D you will find that if you ever need to do V/UHF you will be able to if you get out to QRP site and the bands are dead, antenna fails, etc. (It happens...trust me...been there done that.)..but it also a lot lighter than the 991. Although the model is a little bit aged it is a real workhorse for the smaller lighter rigs. Just my opinion...73's de KJ6FXA

Scott, I'll say I have had my ft857d since 2006 and it has been a fantastic rig, looking to remove it from the truck and get and FT891 for it. Plan on moving the FT857d to the shack for digital rig on HF/VHF/UHF. I have an FT847 for my SSB station. You already have a 991a so sounds like the 891 is going to be most logical decision. 73 de N5XTR

I’ll be interested in your pi build. I followed KM4ACK’s videos and setup a pi for running my digital HF setup. Have been running it 24/7 for the past few weeks and it’s been great. I can sit on my couch and use Fldigi, JS8 or FT8 on my iPad while my shack’s in the basement! I’ve found myself doing more in the hobby because of it. I also have my pi running off of the same 12V power supply as my rig via power pole distribution block. That way if the power goes out, I can still do digital all off of a 12V battery.

That type of setup is what I am work towards. I want to get as wireless as possible much like OH8STN does on his channel. I watch KM4ACK as well and use his pi downloads.

TheNewHam Julian (OH8STN) has gotten his portable setup very compact. I have done some SOTA/POTA with HF, but nothing anywhere close to as portable as his. My interest in the Pi build was to replace my iMac for digital work via HF. I figured out my iMac pulls 100W on average while operating digital. If the power goes out and I wanted to do digital, I won’t be able to run my iMac and radio for very long on a 12V backup battery. That is where the Pi came in. It can run directly off of 12V, and only draws 3.5W! My iPad now becomes my monitor and my Pi the digital mode computer. I also got tired of going up and down the stairs to switch bands, so I setup rig control to the Pi using FLRIG. It has been a very rewarding project and hopefully you find it to be the same! Keep up the good work on your videos. N7CCD

Wow! 891 or 991? Both are dream rigs for me. It comes down to money. I would love to of course have the 991. It's got VHF & UHF, so it's a shack-in-the-box. So I would lean towards the 991. 73! WA5AZQ-Michael

Steve Roberts Right now I’m leaning towards the 891 rather than the 857D but that could change.

I would jump all over the 857d since it's been discontinued. Following your logic,...You may not need UHF/VHF...but it's there just in case. You may not need 100 watts but it's there.

It's just a VHF HT, no C4FM, what is Yaesu doing, they should put C4FM in every radio they make. It isn't dule band either, there are so many UHF repeaters out there, even Yaesu repeaters will support analog FM,
@jm74754 жыл бұрын
Joseph Massimino..since the rig is only about $75 or so at HRO (other places maybe more maybe less)..it is a good starter rig for the newer ham who may not be into C4FM for the price. It is easier to program. It is also a dual band V/UHF. It is also a good through in your bag...use every day type rig.
@TheNewHam4 жыл бұрын
Joseph Massimino it’s dual band VHF/UHF but no C4FM. There is another radio that looks like this one that is VHF only.
