I just ordered the Heil mic splitter. Everything online points to it being too bulky to allow the faceplate to be reinstalled with the adapter plugged into the unit and you’ve just proved it is possible! Thank you for this!!!!!

You know the stock mic detaches from the stock cord. Just use your double female adapter on there.

Nice, I did not know that

Excellent solution. I strongly recommend a couple of snap-on ferrite beads on that cable you got from Amazon, placed just before it enters behind the face plate. CAT cables used for mic audio are very susceptible to picking up RFI that trashes transmit audio. Nice hack, thanks for sharing!

Cracking idea. Neat little video.

They make a straight thru rj45 pass through cable which would eliminate the need for a female to female adapter..God bless Amazon.

Nice! I'll have to get one for mine. Sometimes great solutions are very simple indeed. 73, K8JLW

That’s perfect I just want a shorter CAT6 cable

I purchased a pair of 6 inch long CAT6 8 pin male to 8 pin female cables on eBay for $6.95 (plus tax, free shipping). I have the one connected to the 891 and the other is a spare. Works great and no more removing the face plate to hook up any mic I want without using multiple adapters (only other is an 8 pin round female to an 8 pin modular male for some of my older Yaesu mics).

@@jfrphoto01 Just ordered something similar, but Amazon only had 1' cables. I like the idea of not having a coupler to lose.

Thinking of getting the 891. Is there a limit to how long the mic and head cables can be when using the unit detached? Does standard CAT 6 work for both?

I’m not aware of a limit. I used a standard CAT 6 cable from Amazon.

@obone6025 Put snap-on ferrite beads on CAT-6 cable used for mic extension. CAT cable is very susceptible to picking up RFI from your transmissions that will trash transmit audio. I use CAT-6 and a CAT switchbox to select among various microphones in my shack. It was prone to that RFI problem until I used snap-on ferrite beads at the input & output of the switchbox and at the mic connector. CAT-6 carries the audio quite well, but should be RFI-proofed in this manner. The longer a run of CAT cable used to extend the mic, the more susceptible it will be to RFI from your transmissions. One or two of the snap-ons at each end of the CAT-6 takes care of that issue.
