The IC-7300 has lots of filter ring. Notch filter can take out some background noise but the ring is still there and blurs the received morse. The 991a is very crisp on CW with dots and dashes being clearly defined even at very narrow 50 Hz bandwidth. The IC-7300 might be improved if you used soft filtering.

Indeed a soft slope can help the ringing but it isn’t necessary with the FT-991A. I filmed this during a 160 meter CW contest. The radios needed to be as tight as possible. The 7300 is a great radio in many respects. It’s just not great for pulling out weak SSB signals or fighting QRM during a contest. We must choose a radio based upon what our interests are. If it’s just casual rag-chewing with 10 to 40 over S9 signals, the 7300 is just find. For digging out the weak DX, the DSP in the Yaesu radios provides a distinct advantage.

I don’t think so. The FTdx10 waterfall is fast enough though. But, since the FTdx10 can also decode the CW and display it on the screen, I’m not sure that seeing the dits and dahs on the waterfall is necessary. Hint: The FTdx10 oscilloscope can also display the dits and dahs when set to 300ms/Div. 73, de N4HNH

I have a ft 3000 and the ft 991A , I have to give the nod to the 3000. im a button kinds guy and just want everything on the front panel , and having a 2nd receiver is a plus to , both are great radios

The 3000 is good stuff. The 991A has its place. It’s a great first radio or a backup, or a portable radio, for emergency use. But in my shack, I like a big dedicated HF base station with knobs. I’m with you on that. 73, de N4HNH

I’m glad you like the videos, Steve. Most of what I show with the 5000 is applicable to the 3000. They both use the same DSP chip and the receivers are almost identical. The 3000 is even able to use the same mu-tuning preselectors that the 5000 uses. The main difference is the 5000 has simultaneous dual receive and is knob driven. 73, de N4HNH

No, the FT-991A doesn’t have a CW decoder. It was an option with the FTdx3000D. You had to buy the decoder board. The FTdx10 and the FTdx101D or MP all include the decoder. 73, de N4HNH

I think the scope is better on the 7300 for sure. Other videos I've seen shows the 7300 picking up weak signals on SSB but it does it differently. Environment, antennas, and ext speakers will make a difference also. Nothing against Yaesu, I have three of them. I have an FT- 847 but I always seem to gravitate to my 7100. Different radios for sure. But I just like the functionality of the 7100 better. Do you think Yaesu will stop producing the 5000? That is a sweet looking rig. I guess you have to have an add on for the scope? If cash wasn't an option, would you pick the 5000, the 101D, or the DX-10? Appreciate your videos. Thanks.

The scope on the 7300 is clearly better. If radio was all about seeing signals instead of hearing them, the IC-7300 would win, no doubt. Well, except for the FTdx101 and FTdx10. Cost was not a factor in my decision. I had not purchased a new base station in 20 years. I had saved up. My 8 months of testing the radios from the big three came down to FTdx101MP or FTdx5000MP. I chose the 5000, for various reasons, among them, a real meter, knobs versus menus, better DSP, especially DNR, and I don’t care about waterfall displays. I need to hear the signal, not see it on a screen. I bought the SM-5000 for the speakers. It was better than I hoped it would be. That’s what prompted the two videos I shot about the SM-5000. As good as the 5000 did in my tests, after I added the external mu-tuners, it got even better. Yes, I sense that the FTdx5000MP will soon be discontinued. Watch the video I shot about the FTdx3000D being discontinued for more details. When Yaesu starts building on a per-order basis, a radio’s life cycle is nearing the end. If we, the buyers, keep falling for the marketing hype of the SDR, superheterodyne radios will fade into oblivion. It’s cheaper to build a SDR so the marketing hypes it up big. They make a better margin on a SDR. In Yaesu’s defense, the FTdx10 has a dual-conversion superheterodyne receiver preceding the SDR chip, which is why it can compete with the Flex 6700 and its own big brother, the FTdx101D. I think the FTdx10 is a game-changer in the single-receiver market. When I first noticed the selectivity issues of the IC-7300, and the OVF issue, I said to a couple of friends, “someone needs to make a SDR with a traditional superheterodyne front-end, to narrow down to only the band I want to hear, versus the DC to daylight approach of these direct samplers.” A year later I saw the block diagram of the FTdx101D, dubbed the hybrid. That said, I wouldn’t trade my 5000 for any radio. I would like to have a FTdx10, as a backup base station though. 73, de N4HNH

991A has way better receive then the IC-7300. 7300 has a great scope but receive is not near as good as a 991A and I'm an Icom guy. hmm 🤔

Did you have the Ip+ enabled on the 7300 while on Ssb?

No IP+ in this case. I tried it on SSB. There isn’t an appreciable difference with IP+ for weak signals. It can help in the case of front end overload, which the IC-7300 is prone to.

17 to 20WPM is as fast as anyone should send really. Some professional Morse operators recommend 17WPM. 73, de N4HNH
