Today on detransjoy, we are going to be discussing the idea of medically transitioning children. Now, it is true that in the United States, thanks to Rachael Levine of the Biden Administration , a child of any age may get experimental sex change operation at any age. But today, I would like to focus on children ages 12 - 17 being those who are most likely to be getting Gender Affirming Care. These children we typically referred to as adolescents.
Let’s take a look at the medical criteria for Blue Cross Blue Shield members who are adolescents.
I turn your attention to bullet point 2. “• The member has realistic expectations regarding the possibilities and limitations of surgery and a full understanding of the long-term consequences of surgical procedures.” And also to bullet point number 3. “• The member has been assessed for any co-existing mental health concerns and is not requesting surgery as an initial response to gender dysphoric puberty.”
How can an adolescent even begin to foresee a future life that leaves them permanently physically altered? I’m not talking about next year or even five years from now. I’m talking about say 20 years from now. Will that adolescent still want to be living in their Gender Affirming Body? Who can say right?
I think for myself as a detransitioner, when I first began taking testosterone shots I had no idea what the long term implications would be. Sure, I was given a list of side effects but until I had to live with those side effects did I truly know what was meant by the permanence of medical transition. You see, because I took cross sex hormones, I will have to live with my broken body and broken insides for the rest of my life. Given that, can we really say that an adolescent knows what they are consenting to?
Also, regarding the bullet point that the member has been assessed for any co-existing mental health concerns sounds great if it were happening in all cases. I say this because this is an all too familiar story we are starring to hear from some of the detransitioners. You see, these adolescents are going to the doctor or therapist with some very serious mental health concerns and walking out the door with a prescription for a sex changes.
You may be aware of a Supreme Court Case regarding a states right to ban gender affirming health care. Let’s take a look at that.
Regarding the fifteen year old transgender girl, I would be very curious to know how much counseling this individual received prior to making this very life altering and permanent decision. Being so young, I would also wonder if this individual ever really got the chance to experience what it was like to live as their biological sex? What will be the long term effect of this treatment on this individual? Will they grow to regret their decision like so many others who have walked in similar shoes?
