Welcome to my vintage cookbook KZbin channel!
Looking for some retro baking ideas for the season? We wish you a Very Vintage Holiday with these fudge meltaway bars! These no bake cookies without peanut butter are simple to make and turn out delicious every time.

FUDGE MELTAWAYS
1/2C Butter
1oz unsweetened baking chocolate
1/4c granulated sugar
1t vanilla
1 egg, beaten
2c graham cracker crumbs
1c coconut
1/2c chopped nuts (optional)
1/4c butter
1T milk or cream
2C confectioners sugar
1t vanilla
1.5oz unsweetened baking chocolate
Melt 1/2c butter and 1oz chocolate in saucepan. Blend in granulated sugar, 1t of vanilla, egg, crumbs and coconut (plus nuts if you use them) into the butter-chocolate mixture. Mix well and press into an ungreased baking dish, either 9x13 or 9x9. Refrigerate.
Mix 1/4 softened butter, milk or cream, confectioners sugar, and 1t vanilla. Spread over crumb mixture. Chill.
Melt 1.5oz unsweetened chocolate and spread evenly over chilled filling. Chill again. Cut into small squares before completely firm.

Yes I have the original cookbook also. I bought all the Betty Cookbooks in the 70s. I use to begin baking cookies in Sept to freeze. They never lasted until Christmas to give as gifts. My kiddies loved the look of the candy cane cookies because they were so festive. I haven’t dug this cookbook out in years. Thanks for the reminder. I’m going to give it to my daughter.

I found this book - the original printing in AMAZING shape- at an antique shop today for only $10. I almost choked and passed out. I texted everyone I know and was afraid someone would steal it from my cart. But it made it home with me! Yay!

I’ve been doing the cream wafers since the early 70s when my friend’s mom made them & called them “Fairy Footstools” & we’ve called them that ever since! Tip: the THINNER you can roll the dough, the crispier they will be. So delish filled with lemon buttercream, & we pipe little buttercream holly leaves on top. 💕

I was washing dishes and I just remembered why the cookie recipes make so many. My mom hasn’t made cookies since the 90’s (because “they’re bad for you”) but I remember her telling me that when we were little and living in update New York, the ladies at Christmas and other holidays would all get together (they were usually already in pre formed cliques or groups due to rotating day care and rides and other things) and each make one large batch of a single cookie recipe. Then swap cookies with other ladies in the group. That way they got all the different holiday cookies but only had to bake one recipe. I finally remembered. This is also brilliant. We should do this nowadays.

Cookie swaps are getting more popular again in my area! Cookie tables at weddings are big here as well. I hadn't even heard of a cookie table until I moved here. 😂

My favorite cookbook of all time. The Bon bons are #1. A lifetime memory. My mother made them every year. She even sent me a batch when I was stationed in Germany.

These remind me very much of Nanaimo bars which are a Western Canadian bar cookie/dessert originating from 1953 but some say even earlier like the 1930's. They are usually seen around Christmas or Winter time and are also very sweet as well. A little goes a long way :)

YES! They are pretty much Nanaimo Bars. Right after I made this video, some of my Canadian friends and viewers let me know. I think the only difference was the lack of custard powder in these.

I remember that cookbook from my childhood. I don't know what happened to that copy but I found one of my own the other day for $2 at a thrift shop. I was so excited!

I received this book as a wedding gift in 1975. Mine has been used so much in these 49 years that it's falling apart. The front cover is no longer attached to the book. So many recipes became favorites of my (now VERY grown) kids and the grandkids have developed their own favs from it. I love that generational "love of the book" and connection! So happy to watch your review of this fun book. I also have the Procter Silex ice cream recipe booklet from the 1960's. My dad bought a crank ice cream maker for us (I was about 8 years old) and the booklet came with the ice cream freezer. The chocolate ice cream frozen custard recipe in the booklet is died-and-gone-to-heaven good. It also is falling apart from 65 years of use!

I too have this original cookie book. My Mom and I would get together and bake up a storm for the holidays. This book was always used every year. Yummy!!!! Even though my mom has been gone for many years I still bake from this book every year....not only for the holidays but all year round. 🍪

I bought this book in the 70's when my children were little. We tried to make all the cookies on the cover 😋 My kids loved every cookie in the book 😋

This cookbook has always been a favorite. Mine fell apart, but I was able to find an intact replacement. I remember trying as many recipes as possible when I was first married in 1979.

From Michigan here. I've made/eaten the same thing. I've only ever heard these called "Nanaimo bars." I've heard that they're called that because they first came on the scene in Nanaimo British Columbia.

Wow! My mom had the same cook book (still does)! As a child, I, too, loved this cook book. Sometimes I would take it from the kitchen and flip through it like a regular book just because I loved looking at those pictures of all the cookies so much. So many memories!

I made those bars often when my kids were home! I usually thinned the icing layer down a little to make it more spreadable. I also made the candy cane cookies for many years. And I’ve made the cream wafers, too. I wore out that cookbook and now have my mother’s. I found some of her notes in it. Pretty special! She was a home ec teacher in the 60s and used this book to plan her class on Christmas baking. Those are the notes I found. My copy is a first edition. I found one of my grandmother’s cookbooks dated 1933 and perused it yesterday.

This is one of my favorite cookbooks too. I received a copy from my grandmother for Christmas some 50+ years ago. I still use several of the recipes today (Ethel's Sugar cookies, Peanut Butter cookies, Butterscotch Brownies). The "Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies", p. 9 are really good. They are kind of cake like. I think you would like them.

I grew up with this one. It was published the year I was born. I spent hours and hours pouring over the pages and dreaming of making the beautiful cookies.

Love your channel, Anna! I was given the Betty Crocker Cookbook for girls and boys for my 12th birthday in 1968. I learned to cook from that book! Also, these bars are called Nanaimo Bars in Canada. The current process for avoiding raw egg is to make a custard by melting the butter, sugar and Cocoa powder and stirring the beaten egg in. Cook gently for several minutes. I once made 100 Nanaimo bars for a going away event! And my kids still ask me to make them every year! I made 3 9x13 pans and 1 8x8 this year! Most of the Pinterest posts use this method for Nanaimo bars. Have a great Christmas. From Canada

There's a recipe for hard cooked egg cookies in "Aunt Becky's Traditional European Cookbook" from 1889. I was very curious about it but never tried making them. Also never saw a similar recipe again and have never come across the cookies or anyone who has ever made them. Now looking it up and there are many recipes for them online.

I have read that adding a hard cooked egg yolk to cookies made them tender with a soft texture. I forgot about that tip until now. Going to have to try that out myself.

Our go to cookbook was the 50's Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. I did not own a Betty Crocker cookbook until the '80s which I was given so I could replicate some of my husband's childhood recipes.

I am lucky to have the 1st edition 1st printing of Cooky Book from my husband's grandmother. It is a treasure but sadly the binding is in rough shape. Thanks for the fun video bc I did not ever think to check date or printing! She has p. 114 Fudge Meltaways earmarked! Walnut slices are the only other cookie on that page so it must have been a fav of hers I am guessing! Wish I could send a photo!

I used to decorate cakes, including wedding cakes. My entire kitchen would have a fine layer of powdered sugar when I was finished.

I've always loved this cookbook, too, especially the way cooky is spelled (we always spell it cookie now). My sister had an old baby doll named Cooky. Since this has a raw egg, I don't see why you couldn't bake the bottom layer, let it cool and continue the recipe. This was a very popular cookbook, because I have the 19th printing from 1976. BTW, place a piece of wax paper under your measuring cup for catching the powdered sugar!

I’ve had this book. Not sure if you can relate, as a collector, but I purge things once in awhile. This book was in my collection years ago. I regret it so much now!!! 😢 It had all the classics.

I grew up with that book and we only made cookies once or twice a year, but that was the book we used. It was either the russian tea cake recipe or snickerdoodles.

I have had that book for fifty years. Note: if there is ONE raw egg, the bars must be refrigerated. As a young wife I gave my family of four salmonella poisoning two years in a row. If I remember correctly, the top chocolate layer was done by putting chocolate chips on the bars then putting them in the over for a few minutes. The chips can then be smeared around. Spritz cookies are my favorite. I don't remember if they are in that book or not.

Thats always been my favorite one, I remember looking through it hundreds of times. This was in the late 60's and early 70's, my mom has the original and got me one for Christmas. I cherish it, btw, I was born in 1963. Candy Cane cookies are so delicious my youngest daughter's favorite. My grandma made tons of Christmas cookies and stored them in her attic in tins, you could go there anytime of the year and she'd make up a platter to go using clean foam meat trays and bakery bags. Always a nice summer treat 😊

First appeared in 1952 Women's Auxiliary of the Nanaimo Hospital Cookbook labelled “chocolate square.” Then published in Vancouver's Edith Adams' Cookbook, this time going by the name “Nanaimo Bar.” ( source Food Network )* . I grew up eating these as a family treat at Christmas. Bars of all types were very popular in the 1950s in Canada. Nanaimo Bars are very well known in BC. Canada and still sold in many Bakeries/ Grocery stores around BC.

When I was in high school, I belonged to a youth choir, and our music pastor was from Nanaimo, Victoria, BC. Every summer we took about a two-week singing tour in the Western US and one year we went to Victoria. They served Nanaimo Bars at the snack bar on the ferry. Those among us who did not like coconut were not fans but I thought they were tasty! His wife was a big fan of butter tarts and said that they were best in Canada. First time I had salt and vinegar potato chips on that trip, us American kids had never tried them!

These fudge melt away bars look so good! I like each layer. No it’s impossible to not get powdered sugar everywhere! Lol . I’d be willing to bet my grandmother had this book because she loved Betty Crocker recipes. These turned out amazing . Left you a like friend 🌟

I feel like everyone needs this cookbook! If you're in search of a copy and don't need a vintage one, World Market had the early 2000's reprint for sale earlier this month. I also frequently see copies at Half Price Books for less than $5. I wish I had my mom's copy (no idea what happened to it), but the reprinted version appears exactly as the original. I have a 1980's "version" of this cookbook (with Cookie spelled with an ie) but it''s formatted much differently and this recipe is not included. I have to assume it's because of the raw egg? Who knows. I think the version I have is just somewhat based on the original - the book itself looks very much like the Cookbook for Boys and Girls and published by Golden as well. There are a lot less cool pictures in it.

Those are delicious I have made them before too. I actually cut them in triangles though, that way the tips can be bitten off by people and they get a taste before shoving the whole thing in their mouths lol. Have a great day

Yay, a new video came quicker than we thought! This book is the bee's knees! Love the disclaimer, and the photos are lovely and came across fine on video! Your glee is so infectious! Thank you!! This cookbook is such a gem, and still so useful today. That's not to say that my other vintage cookbooks aren't useful...but I definitely come across more than a few questionable recipes when doing my research. 😆 I'm so glad you liked this one!

Just found you and have been watching all of the vids. This book is a huge part of my childhood. (I'm in my 60s.) My mom started baking for Christmas the day after T-giving. This is the book she used the most. She made a different type of cookie every day, and put them in these big potato chip cans! We tried, but we could never get to them, lol. She let us help with any cut outs or other cookie that needed decorating. Love these videos.

Pineapple Raisin cookies are my families favorite for 3 generations now. It’s the raising variation for the pineapple cookies near the front of the book. We were lucky to get them baked because the dough tastes as good or better than the baked cookies.

I made the hard cooked egg cookies when I was like 14! If I remember correctly, they pretty much tasted like sugar cookies.

Thank you! Ohhh my gosh, I didn't even realize how close these are to Nanaimo bars. The last time I was in Canada was August 2019, and was super bummed that I didn't get to try Nanaimo bars. Then the pandemic hit and my Nanaimo bar hopes were shattered! You've made me realize that they were in my life all along. 😂

they are saying lard tasted better than butter or margarine in baked goods. candy cane cookies needed peppermint extract in them to make them taste better

I can't believe how many of the same books we have. Which makes me think, I probably got too many.🤔 I have this one. Mary's Sugar Cookies, Chocolate Crinkles..and I think..Fudge Jumbles? Maybe not.

Those look delicious. I inherited my mother’s recipe box (ca. 1959-1989) and there is a card with a recipe that looks very similar and is flavored mint called Grasshopper Bars. I am familiar with cookie recipes from Central Europe using sieved hard-boiled egg yolks. I imagine the high fat content of yolks would be credited for making the final cookie tender.

Many cookies freeze well, so you could store the extras in Ziploc bags in the freezer. Don't fill the sandwich cookies first, however.

Am I too much of a super fan that when I saw it was going to be a 20 minute video I thought "Fantastic! 20 minutes of Anna!!" This video made me so happy! That book is spectacular and I can see why it would have been highly influential on future Anna. The photos, the recipes, all of it's great. I"m pretty sure "teen nut bars" was actually a read. This cookie though was fascinating. Obviously very tasty, but it kinda reminds me of what up here in Canada we call a Nanaimo Bar Thank you so much for sharing this excellent recipe from an excellent book!

This is so nice! Seriously, comments like this make my day. I always worry that my videos are too long. 😄 Stephanie also pointed out that these are close to Nanaimo bars! I didn't even realize how similar these bars are and have been making them for years. On my last visit to Canada in 2019, I was so bummed because I didn't get to try Nanaimo bars. Little did I know!
