Thanks for posting this video. I remember summers at OCIR with my uncle, who wrenched on the Mob fuel altered of Phil Miller and Ed Moore. Man, those were fun times !

Nice one! Thanks. Yes, heard about the Mob. Great looking car. A similar one (if not the same one?) is on this video I took. Seem to recall a video of the Mob running at Riverside.

@stephencostello31746 ай бұрын
@danmyers9372 same. I grew up in the mid 70s and watched the short wheel base cars running all nitro. My first love of drag racing. Cars were so sick, a pass was always pedaled 2-3 times. Every time they hit the throttle cars literally jumped off the ground. Header flames 30' high. Ran the same set up as the fuel cars. Hence the name Fuel Altered. AZ was the mecca for FA. The old Tucson drag way. Ride our bicycles 10 miles out Houghton Rd. Come home covered in rubber with bloodshot eyes.

If you look carefully just beneath the drivers seat you can make out the armored box that they rest those huge balls of theirs in. Fuel Altereds sure are a handful.

Nah, the new cars now run a 125” wheelbase same as funny cars. The lack of downforce from a body does make them a bit more of a handful downtrack. Except the cars with the stupid looking big wangs.

I Love the "Awful awfuls"! I've been a fan since the 60's. The modern technology and longer wheelbase does seem to make them more "manageable" No doubt they're STILL a Handful!

Its good to watch both versions although I do prefer the 60s early 70s ones. The longer wheelbases were around in the mid 70s onwards which are still cool.

Just happened on this video and saw the Burkholder Brothers AA/FA. The brothers were from Sacramento, CA and I watched them run many times at Sacramento Raceway more than a few years back. I don't know what the ownership of this car is now, but the brothers page on the Internet says they sold it in the early seventies.

Since everybody is just having fun and its more of a display than a competition some huge burnouts would be extra cool.
@fastracingandhotrods6891 Жыл бұрын
That would be a great part of the show. Best burnout!
@williambarry8015 Жыл бұрын
@@fastracingandhotrods6891 When we were kids an would go to OCIR and Irwindale the burnouts were half the show. They would absolutely fry the tires and it seemed like they went halfway down the track. If there was no wind the smoke would be so thick the cars had to wait for it to clear before they could back up cus they couldn't see anything. I think in this day and age of drifting Nitro burnouts would be a big draw. Course thats easy for me to say cus i have absolutely no clue what it takes to run a nitro outfit.
@fastracingandhotrods6891 Жыл бұрын
@@williambarry8015 Definitely would draw in the crowds. The heydays are the era I look up to. It needs to go back to the roots. Although it was on a run I remember Pure Hell a few years ago boiling the tyres and still running over 200mph! What a show that was and later running a 5 second run later. Heads up racing in Fuel Altered would be awesome based on the Late 60s/Early 70s era.

I always harken back to these cars doing fire burnouts. Extremely dangerous but man it sure looked cool. I had a poster of an altered doing one on my BR wall back around 1970.

Yes the longer wheel base has a completely different weight transfer a bit more consistent you could say ! I prefer the freaking serious "short wheelbase" monsters, the cars that have major driver respect !

Once upon a time a man said "Behold, I shall build a fuel car with a 1940's Fiat" The world laughed pointed and snicked at the man..... In his shop, after many months of grueling work, day and night, tormenting, welding, hammering, grinding and fitting, he declared "Behold, "The fuel car design that will live in infamy" The people fell to their knees, looked up to the man and said, "forgive us for doubting your wisdom, we have experienced the miracle" and so the 40's Fiat lives on, having a place in the history of man. The end

@@fastracingandhotrods6891 Agree. Back in the late 70's when I got out of racing, top AA/FA's were running low 6's at over 220. It was scary as s**t stuff but guys like Wild Willy seemed physically unable to lift!
@fastracingandhotrods6891 Жыл бұрын
@@tonyradmilovich3154 I think it was even more impressive then because prepping the tracks didn't really exist until later. Got an old junkyard 392 and run over 200mph. That's a huge achievement for those teams back in the day. That's what gets me interested but thats more or less gone in racing. Everything is perfection now days.

What's the difference between top fuel and altered fuel😊
@HalfCrazy520 Жыл бұрын
A couple seconds and a hundred mph...
@danmyers937210 ай бұрын
The biggest difference is the wheelbase. Modern Altereds run a 125” wheelbase which is the same as funny cars. Top Fuel cars run a 300” wheelbase (14.5’ longer). Back in the 70’s most altered wheelbases were under 110” which is what made them so notoriously squirrelly.

A AA/FA VS AA/FR the R stands for roadster

These are NOT fuel altereds....they ARE funny cars without a body.....only three could qualify for a AA/FA....Godzilla, sheepherder to plan A

I do prefer the vintage style fuel altered. Some decent ones being built at the moment/recently. Pure Hell was running 5s a while back and still looked to have more left!!
@mikeneitte2128 ай бұрын
Yup long wheel bases so huge difference in the way it handles..old school short wb altered will always be a crowd favorite..like 1/4 mile racing..I dont keep up with or go to races anymore because of the 1,000 foot bs..
@halseyknox8 ай бұрын
People, teams on a budget make the show fun and exciting. The deep pocket guys drive the low buck budget guys out and lobby for rule changes to make changes to change the cars go faster but also increase the cost This is why the best years of nostalgia were the begining years. Nothing wrong with a fuel car then running 6.50 - 7 second times with updated safety requirements but keeping with the 60' 70's look and spirit including the CHOICE to wear a breather mask like many did. Look at a AA/FD from 1990-2005 and now. With the slower times came affordability until the abominations crept in and took over. Now it's big show wannabees that have brought in computers and high tech modern B S......😡

Funny car chassis and they call themselves A/A fuel Altereds! 🤦....... Try comparing to Old school Nanook and try running a 3.00 front tire!! 😲
@ccrider004 ай бұрын
They still have the motor in front. They could get roasted alive like Zookeper at Indy in 60? Or have a clutch blow up and get the car in half like happened to Mike Soroken " of Surfers fame--- usuially beat all " Sorokens car cut in half at OCIR IN70? The rear half of the rail went tumbling down the trak while Sorokins arms flinging out like a rag doll with every tumble it's been described ! So just realize these Altered's are still damn dangerous to drive. Just be happy they didn't go rear engined! 😖 yawn 🤨🤮
